Both president Harding and Truman had pet squirrels (both named Pete), which they kept at the White House. Harding's Pete would run around during official meetings, joked as being "the first one in the room and the last to leave", and Truman's Pete would accompany him on his regular walks around the White House grounds. And now here we are with a state government saying "you can't keep squirrels indoors" and seizing them over anonymous complaints and lack of paperwork.

The Internet is absolutely full of people who have wild animals as pets… Birds, raccoons, multiple squirrels, deer etc. nobody expects this to happen with no dialogue first. I can see where they didn’t think there was an eminent danger… If they did, I’m sure things would’ve been different.

@@gloriastreet4684 I don’t really understand what other people having untraditional pets has to do with the question. I get that people have an affinity for “uncommon” animals. Hell my dad had a Komodo Dragon from the time I was about 3-4 maybe 5 years old. It had its venomous glands removed or something but my point is I understand that. What I don’t understand is how they had him over 7 years and never got him certified or whatever tf they were trying to do to put more legitimacy behind Peanut. They were also essentially rich, there’s no excuse for waiting 7 years to do something like that. I’m not saying the capture and consequential euthanization was in anyway justified because personally I don’t believe it was; but they should’ve taken the initiative the moment they realized Peanut was going to be a member of the family. Rabies is by far one of the cruelest was to die (disease wise) with virtually no cure. There’s definitely cause for authority’s to at the very least hire qualified personal to assess the animals then return them back home if it passes the checkouts. Peanut shouldn’t have been euthanized but from the dudes own mouth had they gotten those qualifications for him there wouldn’t be a risk of seizure. They’ve taken zero responsibility for what happened even though they’re literally the only people that could’ve done that for him. Nobody else was going to get him certified. They dragged their feet and they paid the price for it. I feel worse for the squirrel than I’d ever feel for them.
