8/27/2023 sitting alone on a beach on the gulf coast of Florida. Realizing more than half my life is behind me now, mother has been gone since 1992 and father, a Vietnam vet and strongest man I've ever known is suffering from beginning dementia. I'm at that stage in life, that age, where some cousins, long time friends and high school alumni, are starting to develop serious health conditions, some getting sick with terminal illnesses and some having already passed the last few years. Where did the time go? What happened to that feeling of youthful invincibility? It seems just a eye blink ago friends were plenty and everyone had time to hang out. Now, lucky to see even my closest ones every few months. I can't even put my finger on having any past realization that my 20's, 30's and now 40's have ended. I wasn't asleep but the further back I go it all seems like a dream. Pearl Jam seems like a few years ago not over 25. This song comes on my play list right at that time when I'm tearing up and the flow of them come hard. By God I haven't cried like that in a long, long time. Then by the end of the song I feel absolution in a small way, a decompression happened. A couple of laughing gulls are going back and forth in front of me, the sun is on its way to setting and the waves are gently rolling in. I realize that's just the way the life is. No use fighting or trying to make sense of it. Nostalgia is beautiful and I do love it, but it can wreck havoc on your heart if you let it. "It makes much more sense to live in the present tense", because that's all you can control.

“Most people struggle to be present. People go and sit in ashrams for 20 years in India, trying to be present. Do yoga, meditate, trying to get here, now. Most people live in fear because we project the past into the future. Michael Jordan is a mystic. He was never anywhere else. His gift was not that he jumps high, runs fast, shoots a basketball. His gift was that he was completely present. And that was the separator. The big downfall of a lot of other players who are otherwise gifted is thinking about failure. Michael didn’t allow what he couldn’t control to get inside his head. He would say, ‘Why would I think about missing a shot that I haven’t taken yet?’”

Michael Jordan is no mystic. Nor did he have ultimate knowledge of the natural state. Just stop it please. He was an extraordinary basketball player who is now a dollar billionaire with his own shoe brand. Sure he was present when he played basketball but that should not be mistaken for anything else.

Lyrics Do you see the way that tree bends? Does it inspire? Leaning out to catch the sun's rays...a lesson to be applied... Are you gettin' something out of this all encompassing trip? You can spend your time alone redigesting past regrets oh... Or you can come to terms and realize You're the only one who can forgive yourself oh yeah... Makes much more sense to live in the present tense... Have you ideas on how this life ends? Checked your hands and studied the lines? Have you the belief that the road ahead ascends off into the light? Seems that needlessly it's gettin' harder To find an approach and a way to live... Are we gettin' something out of this all-encompassing trip? You can spend your time alone redigesting past regrets, oh... Or you can come to terms and realize... You're the only one who cannot forgive yourself, oh... A-makes much more sense to live in the present tense...

"Makes much more sense, to live, in the present tense". So simple, so true and yet so difficult to do. As humans we are blessed with intelligence, but that brings (in most cases) inherent regret, shame and embarrassment at our past endeavours and failures.
