Esta canción fue escrita durante la primera guerra del Golfo, cuando George Bush padre era presidente. Habla de un joven que vestía al estilo grunge con camisa a cuadros y el cabello largo y descuidado. Su hermano murió combatiendo en la guerra. Un día él recibe una carta que venia en uno de esos sobres amarillos que usa el ejército y al leerla se entera de la muerte de su hermano. Entonces triste por lo ocurrido, decide salir a caminar. Durante su trayecto pasa por una casa donde una pareja de ancianos estaba sentada en el pórtico tomando té, y vio que tenían la bandera estadounidense puesta afuera. Él los saluda, porque se sintió identificado con la bandera y pensó : "La bandera, mi hermano, ya sabes ..." Pero ellos no sabían por lo que él estaba pasando. Y motivados por la apariencia del joven prefirieron no responder a su saludo.
La canción ha cambiado su significado con el tiempo y Eddie Vedder cambia la letra cada vez que la canta en vivo conforme quiere darle un nuevo significado
