Picked mine up! Definitely worth it HOWEVER -get tension locks, it de tunes fast -replace the stock batter heads (I went Evans EMAD, coated ST Dry, and clear EC2s)

Not to completely bomb you with questions, I have a Pearl Midtown, and the snare and toms ring like crazy, what did you find the best way to tune the toms was? and what muffling and tuning are you using on the kick drum?

Where is your drums placed? Is the room small/untreated w/ sound insulation? Either your room needs to be treated by placing thick acoustic foam/rockwool panels on the corners (Where bass freq. usually accumulate) to improve the acoustics of the room. Setting up thick curtains or even placing a mattress inside the room can help! Or try putting muffling rings on your toms/snare, cutting a small hole offset on the bass drum (preferably 3-4 inches) and putting foam inside to increase punchiness and reduce sustain.

You can also try to replace the stock drumheads on the toms with 2ply heads (eg. remo emperor, evans g2, aquarian response2) or 2ply premuffled heads (eg. remo pinstripe). Coated heads seems to be a bit more muffled and has more attack. Stock drumheads tend to be thinner (which make it more resonant and ring longer) in addition of its poor quality.

Paul Gonzales thank you so much for this advice. basically what I'm understanding is that I need to invest in some nice heads? The kit is in a corner of a 15x15 room with fairly thick carpet, so it's a reasonably dead room already. Should an Aquarian Superkick II do the trick for the bass drum?

Yes! you could invest for some thicker (2ply) heads on your toms & bass drum to make it sound better. Also buying some drum muffling rings that fit your drums can greatly remove the unwanted overtones and sustained ringing. If you want a punchier tone on your bass drum, the SKII would be a great choice! (but since it's a 16" bass drum, maybe the SKI would be better because the SKII might be too dead sounding for you.) If you want your toms more responsive even at light playing, you could try coated 2ply on the toms but for the snare, I'd recommend a single ply coated. ~ Although, A thick carpet might not be enough in treating the room acoustics especially if you haven't treated the corners of the room. Sound especially bass freqs. tend to clump up in the corners thus creating an uneven low end boost and muddy tone. If you find your bass drum lacking in definition or has too much sustain (and want that quick & punchy sound!) you can try doing these steps. 1. If you want to make your drums sound clearer and crisp (especially your bass drum), you should treat the corners first with some bass traps/thick mineral wool panels. 2. Repositioning the drums away from the corner helps because putting your drums in the corner acts as a megaphone and possibly affect the true sound of your drums. 3. Try placing a firm pillow inside your bass drum where it will touch both heads to muffle it and reduce those extra sustain. 4. Cutting a small hole (about 3.5" dia.) offset from the resonant head of the bass drum can also make it punchier and lessen the sustain. Sorry for the long post.

However, I don't know about the 13' size floor tom. Would rather prefer a 14' (14x12 maybe) Also, I believe the smallest bass drum I could 'feel' as a bass drum would be an 18'. I'm guessing then that my ideal sizes for a kit like this would be 10 (rack), 14 (floor) and 18 (bass). Tama's club kit leads the race right now...
