How can a tractor be more expensive than an industrial locomotive? On Alibaba they cost about the same for a brand new one. the tractor would also have to drive more to transport the same load and would have more friction.

I always wondered if there existed a smaller more simplified freight train that actually carried a payload and had a cab to ride in. It's like a freight version of a tram. @@theghostofthomasjenkins9643 Not on that surface. Longer rails would be heavier and harder to shift when necessary. Offsetting the joints would make it harder to lift 'panels' (consisting of one rail length complete with sleepers) when installing or moving the track. The only way to make the rails stay straight would be to build a trackbed with huge quantities of clean fill and ballast - which would defeat the whole point of a quickly and cheaply laid track on the peat.

@brianlee6930 7 жыл бұрын
Thomas Scanlon It's a bog, any large wheeled vehicle will sink at a drop of a hat. Narrow gauge rail is the only way to extract peat. Those zigzag rails you see are due to the fact that they are placed on a live and still wet bog. It's a partially dried swamp hence the reason why the rails move. Every loco that they run is under 2 tons anything more that that and it will sink.

I thinks some people here do not understand this line and why they have that. Since over 1000 years people to cut peat out from the moor. Since they starts with railways they use them in the moor too. This line put out the peat over 5 till 10 km to the normal gauge line and truck station. Inside the moor is it so weak that normal trucks, if they stay longer at one place, go inside them forever. So only the railway can handle this weight, special the cutted peat is wet and very heavy!

The apparent poor condition of the tracks is exaggerated by filming from a long distance with the use of zoom. That gives another strange effect: It seems that the train is moving very slowly. However, they are temporary laying routes, which can be placed and moved for entire sections with ease, according to the needs of loading in different places. Those laying without compacting the ground produce, over time, the twisting of the rails. This type of laying is common in quarries and mineral deposits. But, it is true that it is very funny. That seems from a very poor and backward country, which is not the case in Germany. In Argentina we have some trains like this

It looks like the most economic solution. It would cost far more to construct temporary roads for dump trucks. And the rail tracks can be moved and re-used indefinitely.
@ChadDidNothingWrong
@ChadDidNothingWrong 3 жыл бұрын
@@cr-yi7ep That depends on the soil, climate, and surrounding infrastructure....it's possible that this is no longer efficient if the state of nearby road networks has changed, but remains as a result of the economic barriers of changing machinery. (Although you'd probably need removable tracks on any truck that went in there, regardless, so maybe this still is the best way.) My point is just that you can't ever be certain without the greater context.

If you zoom right in you can see the rail tracks. No roads across it, there's no reason to go there except to extract peat. I think the rail tracks only lead to the edge of the bog - there's some sort of depot at the south end on route 401 where the peat is processed in some way and loaded onto road trucks. www.google.com/maps/@53.0170578,7.6305004,479m/data=!3m1!1e3

Vancouver has one of the world's biggest raised peat bogs, and on Google Earth you can still see the scars of the railway used in the harvesting operation for many years. Totally shabby when I saw it years ago, it used old Plymouth narrow gauge diesels - or what was left of them - and tall cars with sides that swung open when they were run out on a raised track at the plant site. Now the bog is considered too valuable to the environment to dig up!

This obviously is a temporary track run over a bog, where there is very little structure in the ground to support weight. I didnt understand PEED. Peat bog, now i get it. Amazing that the train didnt just jump the tracks in fear. Tracks look like they were built by a,severly intoxicated surveyor

I understand that the ground is soft and the tracks are moved periodically as the peat/peed is harvested, but it looks like no effort is made to keep it straight. I have to agree, however, that as long as it is working, there is no reason to change it. When the locomotive finally falls over, then they will straighten out the tracks.

It wouldn't surprise me if the axles on the locomotives were articulated (could bend in the middle). That and the slow speed would allow it to get over almost any set of track, so long as it was continuous.

How can it be possible? ! Rail seems like chewing gum, nothing is strong... Nice video which presents the hard reality of some workers...

Ist schon interessant, wie das Rad-Schiene-Prinzip auch funktionieren kann :-) Ich habe nur noch nicht herausgefunden, was mich immer wieder an solchen Videos über Bahnen mit schlechter Gleislage fasziniert.

Railway tracks in Argentina are exactly like in this video. The sad is that passenger trains are running over them and we have many accidents.

Thats really cool as you don't have to use skilled workers to lay the track.
