The Mooney lick. A guy came into my music store with a new MSA Classic D10, it was 1973-4, it was the first time I had seen a pedal steel up close and he played the Mooney lick. Nice sounding Emmons, btw.

Classic Mooney lick. Probably Moons most famous lick and its so useful. You are so right you want to hear the A pedal bend.... thats how Mooney did it and it gives that Bakersfield sound. ..I've heard Mooney was actually going for a smoother feel, not wanting to hear that bend but the cable mechanism on the old Fender 400s wouldn't pull quick enough so it ended up being a much cooler lick. Nice video buddy! Im gonna check out Dylans record.

Good work on this. This is a very handy lick that I believe originated with Ralph Mooney. It can be played very fast quite easily. It also puts on display the "two below no pedal position, with A pedal" for a 7th chord.

The Mooney lick. A guy came into my music store with a new MSA Classic D10, it was 1973-4, it was the first time I had seen a pedal steel up close and he played the Mooney lick. Nice sounding Emmons, btw. Long ago Rusty Young mentioned that he thought fast vibrato sounded manic. It started me noticing how many steel players can’t keep their left hand still and how many over use it.

You’ve got great tonal touch in your playing and you’re Emmons sounds great. Appreciate the theory being included, since, as you said, it allows you to search other positions for even more licks on your own. I’ve used a similar lick to the first part in the past, but not carried out on down the fretboard as you did. Enjoy your teaching style, so I’ve subscribed.

Very nice playing and teaching as well. Might be good to mention that both licks are using triplets as their basic rhythmn pattern. At least in your pal’s recording.

Just out curiousity because I am new to all of this. When you see pedal steels with two necks, is the neck furthest away from the muscician always an E9 tuned amd the one closest is C6? If so why is that and the song fire on the mountain by the MTB is that an e9? Thanks
@licksandtricks68093 жыл бұрын
Howdy bud. Fire on the mountain is E9. You are right about the neck positions. I'm not sure why that became common practice to situate them that way. There are some famous players who had E9 closer though.

Also, there are some amps that are popular steel amps, and I will make a video about this. Some common ones are Peavy Session and Nashville series, Fender Deluxe Reverb/Vibrolux/twin, Roland JC120 (or JC40), Quiltaire. This is a very incomplete list.

What are you using to get your tone outside of your guitar?
@licksandtricks68093 жыл бұрын
Hey Gary, I can't remember if I was recording through my amp or DI for this video, but my signal chain almost always looks like this: pedal steel > sarno steel guitar black box > volume pedal > amp (Peavey Session 400 or Roland JC 40) or DI > UA apollo interface. For recording applications I usually use reverb and delay plugins. My go to plugins are Soundtoys' Little Plate reverb (often 1 second with the high pass filter at around 300 Hz) and SoundToys' Echo Boy with a 250 to 300 ms delay. I like to filter out the low and high end of the delay. Hope this is helpful!
