Pedestal Deck Plate Install - March, 2017

This video recaps the installation of a pedestal deck plate on my Key West 1720. I have been considering the installation of a pedestal chair to make long days of fishing a little more enjoyable. The weather was a little iffy for fishing, and was perfect for this install.
The video speeds thru a lot of the work. I was experimenting with the editing software a little in the making of this video. I hope you enjoy the accelerated action. If you're real good at listening, you may understand what is being said.

Jim- I've wanted to tell you how I enjoy your videos. I stumbled upon them while researching the trim motor replacement and your video was most helpful. Been "hooked" ever since 😁. I find the picture quality spectacular and your voice is one for broadcasting. Can you please provide the model info for your go pro. Jason, thank you very much for the compliment. I use a combination of two 3+ Black and one 3+ Silver, with Wasabi extension batteries. All videos are shot at 1080p, 30 fps and usually on wide format. I prefer fixed mounts, using the gooseneck clamp to attach the cameras to the CC handrail. For this particular video, the camera was fixed mounted on a side rail. I'm still awaiting the call for tryouts on the next Pixar movie. :)

Joshua Munoz, The base, adjustable post and seat were all purchased from Bass Pro Shops. The installation hardware came from West Marine.

Nice project, would you install the same post on a hatch lid? My ideal position for the post is in the middle of a storage hatch lid. Thanks

Dennis Howard - a previous owner did just that based on some filled holes I have on my forward storage hatch lid. I opted for a more rigid mounting area, feeling that there could be too much flex on a hatch lid.

Dennis Howard - a lot would depend upon the weight of the person sitting in the pedestal chair and the size of the hatch. A smaller surface area hatch would be expected to be more rigid than a larger area hatch. A 225+# person would obviously stress the area more than a 150-175# person. Bases can be obtained in a multitude of sizes. I recall seeing a 3 x 8/10” mount somewhere.

Jim watching your video mounting a deck plate on your 17 20 Key west . My question is do you need to put a backing plate on the underside?

Curtis, thanks for watching and commenting. If you can fabricate a backing plate, by all means use it as it will help distribute the load over a greater area than the fender washers that I used. I weigh in at 160# and the fender washers have held well for me for the few times I've used the seat. That might not be the case with someone weighing 50+ pounds more than me.

looks like the hole was much bigger than it needed to be. You should check the holes with the screws not the hole in the plate

S Lange, I think you are referring to that center hole. The large size of that hole was dictated by the protruding bottom of the enlarged base where the pedestal inserts. The attaching screws’ holes might could have been slightly smaller but I used some overly large screws for securing the base. Probably overkill too. Thanks for watching and commenting.

@@JimMFishing Just what hole saw diameter did you use? I haven't drilled mine yet for the same deck plate you used. After measuring, it looked like 2 1/2 inch would do the trick, but I see the suggestions for the install say 3 inches. You may have mentioned it during your video but the fast forward covered it.

@ikesans - I don’t recall what the hole saw size was. The best approach is to overlay the saw on the protruding base, or eyeball it side-by-side. You can determine if enough of the deck will be removed for that portion of the base to fit entirely in the hole so it doesn’t prevent the base from sitting flat on the deck surface. Different bases might require more or less area to be removed depending on design.

OK. Thanks for your input. I have the same B Pro Shop base plate and I noticed the hole was tight enough that you had to side-hew a path for the center bolts to pass. According to what I have measured, the 2 1/2 will make just such a hole giving the center washers material to hold against. I may use some flat stock to spread the stress more evenly.@@JimMFishing

18 min is a long video to just drill 6 holes and fill with 6 bolts. Suggest anyone doing this project to wear a mask anytime you drill into fiberglass hulls….. very dangerous to your lungs with those particles floating around in the air! Be safe
