Peeling Debarking Machine/homemade

Hello Jorge i made the machine with the help of a friend who works with metal its basicaly a pipe of about 10 centimeter diameter and 40 centimeters long with two 20 centimeter discs welded on the ends a 30 millimeter round bar runs through the center and is welded in place this is the peeling head six hardened steel chains of about 41 centimeter length are welded on to the discs from side to side see video this peeling head is mounted on bearings the top pulley wheel is 31 centimeter diameter and on the motor 16 centimeter diameter the motor spins at 1500 rpm be sure to place a gaurd over the chains on the side of the operator open on the other side to allow the bark to fiy away i hope this helps you Jorge Good Luck David

Hi I made it this size to allow slack in the chains it was guess work! Ive been using it monthly for more than 10 years and it’s great with smaller chain links it should work well narrower I guess!!! Good luck be careful David

It can handle 12 cm diameter eucalyptus saplings bigger than that I cannot pick up!!! Regarding cedar I don’t have any experience with cedar logs Good luck David

Amazing, now I know how to speed up production without killing myself. Do you have a schematic/ plan for this machine and what size motor are you using. He frame looks very solid, maybe even cast iron? Sure made it look like a breeze. Can you send me a diagram on how to make one of these for myself? Again, my complements to your enginuity. Hi Vivek I will get back to you with the details but basically it’s built of things i had the large pulley slows it down to a not too scary speed! Chains from a crane hardware store chain too soft metal wears out fast

What sort of finish did your end up on the timber itself? I’m interested in building one of these for debarking smoker wood.

Hi Nick the saplings generally have a smooth finish but if they dry for a couple of days after cutting the bark is harder to remove and results in broken fibres and a rough finish for best results peel straightv away after cutting you can see the finish at around 2 minutes in to the video good luck David

Hi I don’t have any experience with cinnamon i made this for the wood the bark becomes very beaten up and pulp like .its a simple machine as you see in the video I don’t have any real plans but I suggest that you experiment with the concept to see if it leaves the bark in a good enough condition for you chain size and speed are the main variables Best Wishes David

It’s made from junk yard pieces I don’t have a plan but as you see it’s mainly the chains rotating geared down with a big pulley wheel that beat the bark an loosen it show the video to a good metal workshop they will figure it out good luck

Hola Jorge hice la máquina con la ayuda de un amigo que trabaja con metal su basicaly un pipie de unos 10 centímetros de diámetro y 40 centímetros de largo con dos discos de 20 centímetros soldada en los extremos una barra de 30 milímetros redonda pasa por el centro y está soldada En lugar de esta es la cabeza peladora seis cadenas de acero endurecido de aproximadamente 41 centímetros de longitud se soldan a los discos de lado a lado ver video esta cabeza de pelado se monta en los cojinetes la rueda de la polea superior es de 31 centímetros de diámetro y en el motor de 16 centímetros de diámetro El motor gira a 1500 rpm asegúrese de colocar un gaurd sobre las cadenas en el lado del operador abierto en el otro lado para permitir que la corteza a pie lejos espero que esto le ayuda Jorge Good Luck David

Looks interesting. Considering building something similar, but larger. Do you have some details that describe stick peeler? Size of motor (Hp or Watts?), and rotational speed? Belt Drive size and pulley ratios? Do you have an approximate rotational velocity that the chain strikes the bark surface? How did you "harden" the chains? Did you purchase them this way, were they "high strength, or did they get a nitrite - case harden type heat treatment?

Hi Ross i built the machine with what i had but heres the details motor 220 volt single phase no plate for information but im guessing its 1500 rpm pulley wheels 15cm diameter to 30 cm diameter 6 hardened chains from junk yard welded to two 20 cm diameter discs the chains have about one link slack i hope this helps if you have any more questions please ask good luck be safe and maybe connect the chains with hardened shekels the welds concern me re safety David

That's the design of large whole tree debarker/chippers Morbark builds some with 400hp+, look up That Chipper Guy on KZbin and you'll understand what I'm staying.

hi Evan i recently saw that chipper guy crazy big machine and it ate his Go pro too !! same idea though my chains are connected horizontaly at both ends what i saw of that chipper guys were flailing verticaly connected at one end i dont think my scrap yard motor is making much hp it over heats in summer and cuts out thanks for commenting David

Rustic David I recommend getting a small Honda motor, it may be noisier but it would have more power and be more reliable and more portable. Morbark did have a horizontal chain design at one point but found out it was easier maintenance wise \ cheaper to have a vertical design but they had to add a extra drum to do the same work. Plus those chain sections are very heavy so it is actually safer in vertical cus most of the time if a link breaks it the last one cus of wear. I am only 16 so I am no expert, I've only been around one of those machines once, I'm just very interested in logging so I've done a lot of research, hope this helps your design, cheers.

Hi i built it for maximum 10/12cm diameter bigger logs are too heavy to lift an manipulate I think for large heavy pieces some rollers before and after the rotating chains would help thanks for watching David

Hi twobears it depends on a few things if the saplings are fresh 1-2 days cut and the sap is running they bark peels easily without damage to the wood of the saplings started to dry or the sap isn't running in the winter for example then more force is needed to remove the bark this can result in damage to the wood

But the damage is minimal if the operator is careful some sanding when the wood is dry fixes the damage I hope this helps Happy Woodworking David

hi ive peeled eucaliptus red gum and yellow box and olive all of whivch are quite hard but i think its the operator that will control the damage depending on how much pressure he applies against the chains good luck where did you find plans id locve to see them i built mine without plans on here say!!

at one time licoln electric printed books with welding project it them..the plans are in one of those books.it's a lot like your but has a roller for the wood to ride on.

Hi its a 1.5 HP 9.8amp 1500 RPM 230 V thats all the information i can read on its plate its a free junk yard motor i geared it down with pulley wheels that i had trial and error I don’t know the rpm of the chains but you need quite slow I hope that helps you best wishes David
