@@SmokeFactory While it might not be "love" trust and understanding can go a long way in human/lizard interactions. They definitely can behave differently towards their human versus a stranger after all. Besides we aren't in their heads so who's to say familiarity doesn't feel similarly to anything we experience to them? It's apples to oranges. And, speaking as a former reptile owner; people saying things like this can come off as dismissive (or rude) towards the keepers' feelings of their animals--the people posting content like this, as well as those commenting, are people like you with feelings. (Not saying you are I've actually seen blatantly cruel takes, so don't take this as chiding or anything.) Point being, while an animal might not experience the world as you do--some of us humans tend to empathize more (and yes, perhaps, project or anthropomorphize too much) and you may find it useful to keep that perspective in mind! Take care~!

Just to remind people: never force a shed. In cases like this, it's just helping it along. If you feel any resistance in the skin: that part isn't ready to come off! With reptiles, you should always supply them with some sort of rough surface to use to help peel off skin as they know their own body and when it's ready. This could be bark or a rock (sanitised prior ofc). Ik in snakes, particularly, it's not a good idea to force the skin. With geckos, monitors, and lizards, skin comes off in clumps; in snakes, however, it should come off in one piece. If it doesn't come off perfectly, it may be a sign that the temperature and/or humidity needs to be altered, even if only slightly. Geckos often eat their skin when peeling it off, so don't be worried if you see it bitting at it's toes; it's normal. Edit: someone mentioned it in the comments, but if you're having more severe issues with stuck shed you can give your reptile a bath. There's afew key things you have to do like makes sure the water is slightly warm but not to warm, and provide a small rock or resting point so the reptile can keeps it's head out of the water without having to strain its neck upwards. There's great videos you can watch that give a step by step explanation on how to do it safely and comfortably for the animal. It's usually only good to give your snake or reptile a bath as a last resort though, since you don't want to needlessly stress out the animal. You can also provide them with a water bowl that's just big enough for them to submerge their body in.

@@julian5857 The answer doesn't change. You don't have to peel the skin when the lizard wants to, but rather when it's ready. If you hold it the lizard will just move regardless, even if it's not ready, and it can cause damage.

In the wild, reptiles roaming through twigs and branches would naturally tear that pocket open. When domesticated it becomes the owners responsibility to help. Never pull hard on skin that’s not already detached though, always hold it and let the lizard do it’s own moving because you don’t want to expose scales that aren’t ready yet.

@@MaddoxMelton Yes, and in the wild when they get stuck, the reptile themselves move, the things they get stuck on don’t pull on it. When a human chooses to pull rather than just hold (when the skin isn’t already fully detached), it can cause the reptile pain. Letting them do the pull instead of you pulling, ensures that you aren’t causing them any pain.
@seganaleqa
@seganaleqa Жыл бұрын
@@mr.o523 If the skin isn’t fully detached, it’s indicating the scales underneath are not fully prepared for exposure to the elements. It can cause the reptile pain if you pull skin off that’s not fully detached yet, and those newly exposed scales that weren’t ready are prone to infection. Think of it similar to a human scab, it hurts to pick a fresh scab and it can cause bleeding and infection to do so, but if you leave the scab alone so new skin can grow underneath and let it flake on it’s own, it won’t hurt/bleed/infect. That’s why it’s best to let the reptile do the pulling while you just hold on, because they’ll know when it starts to hurt and they’ll stop moving.

Remember everyone, helping reptiles shed is only harmful if you force a shed when they are not ready, in which case it's not helping, it's forcing. If the skin is not coming off, DO NOT TRY TO PEEL IT OFF. For lizards, they shed in patches so some spots might not be ready to shed at the same time. Edit: guys I'm not criticizing him or saying he doesn't know what he's doing, I'm just adding something Edit 2: Again, I'm not saying he did this. I'm not saying he did anything wrong. You do still need to pay attention when removing the skin yourself though, instead of letting it fall off. Because if the skin doesn't immediately peel off, and it's still stuck to his new layer of skin, Don't Force it to come off. Because that means that he hasn't completely finished growing that new layer under it. You can get them infected doing that too.

A good rule for shedding is if it’s already started to shed and comes off very easily it’s ok to peel. Probably even feels good for them. Just don’t try and force any shed that’s stuck or not ready to come off. To help your reptile shed on it’s own you can soak them and depending on the species you may need to up your humidity or add a humidity box. To objects like rocks or bark can help too, it gives them something to rub against to help get that shed off.

So I just held him in my hand even though he didn't like being held. And just kind of gently massaged the molted skin off the end of his tail. It's kind of funny cuz you could see him kind of realize that I wasn't trying to fight him and that I was actually helping him.

Since I work specifically with venomous snakes I usually opt for the letting them soak in water method for a bit. After which I will VERY carefully try to grab any shed that I can for the snakes/ usually after the bath I can get all of their shed off by just letting them do their thing while I slowly but surely peel their skins(ideally in one piece but you know that that goes) but for the most part they’re chill with it. Others try to just kill me so we go at their pace lol
