I would never be able to get rid of a box of clothes without looking in it! And I am no longer cluttered. I’m a little messy, but it’s taken me years to get rid of stuff! So I’m in that boat with you! I am helping several friends declutter using the little by little method. Obvious trash is our first attack. If it is debatable skip it. You are doing GREAT!!

When I started my journey and was drowning in clutter, I had a backroom I put all my stuff in I was not ready to deal with. So I could clear out the rest of my house. When my entire house was clean and decluttered, I would take out one bag/box/pile at a time and sit in the living room relaxed and don't get so overwhelmed by the amount I had to declutter.

I watched a hoarder show once and they were very polite to the 2 people who lived there but they tested them..if a fire starts you only have a minute or so to get out of your house before the smoke gets you..they timed the 2 people to see if they could climb over their hoard and get out in a minute..then they blindfolded them because the smoke from a fire makes a room very dark..the people would of died in the smoke before the fire even got to them..the testers were very kind to the people and the people realised they were in jeopardy and then more willing to clean out some if their possessions.

I want to say you have motivated me to start cleaning again. I don't have a lot of clutter or clothing, but laundry piles up and can sit for weeks. I had hired a house keeper but as you say the anxiety wasn't worth it, having her in the house, touching my stuff, lol. Anyway, I decided to try doing one goal at a time. I started with clearing the dining room table and the kitchen counters, then the bathroom and gave it a good scrub down. Then did the half bath, then swept up all the dog hair in the hall and kitchen. This took place over several days. It feels good, and my next goal is to vacuum the office and the living room. My husband has had cancer for several years, and my son was diagnosed last fall (he is an adult and lives in another state). I am just now seeing that depression and anxiety was the trigger for my lack of cleaning. You have been a terrific motivator! If Mira can do it, so can I! Mira, when I was younger I wasn’t much of a housekeeper. Now, I’m very tidy. I had so many clothes and shoes it was crazy! I think you might have me beat in that department though 😂. I hung onto my things because I had paid a lot of money for most of my stuff. After I retired, 10 years ago, I continued to keep the clothes and shoes. I moved into a beautiful old apartment. It was built in the late 1800’s. Beautiful oak doors, trim, a beautiful fireplace with glazed brick and all oak mantel piece. It’s 900 square feet! However, it only has about 30 square feet of closet space!! Soooo, I had to really cut back on my clothes and shoes. I packed up almost all of my work wardrobe and shoes. I donated my things to a local women’s shelter. I felt so liberated from all of those clothes!! I still have far too many clothes. I am going to go through them again a purge some more of them. There are so many women who might benefit from having “new” clothes to look for work or just to have some more options. Like you, a lot of my clothes and shoes still had tags on them. I’m so proud of you for letting so much go! I love watching your videos! It helps people who are overwhelmed to realize they don’t have to do all of the work in one or two days or weeks or months. They can follow your lead and declutter at their own pace! You are such an inspiration to so many people. Keep plugging away and sharing your videos so that others might see how they can follow your journey ❤❤❤

Those brakes really can set in. It's not an easy thing to overcome. Many days I'm right there with you, brakes on. I just tell myself to do ONE small thing. Often, once I start moving, I reflect and see how I feel... I almost always feel better about myself and the fact I did one thing to overcome those brakes. That leads to more movement. It takes a practiced mindset to talk to yourself about movement. Not tasks or the entire job, just one simple movement in one direction. Lots of love.

I use a gardening stool that can be flipped to be a stool and has “saddle bags” I can put my scissors, tape, marker in) or it can be turned over to be a kneeler with (the upside down legs as side rails so I can get up) I got it for the yard, but it has been a godsend for getting down and dirty decluttering. Because of back injury and balance problems, the big thing for me is to get someone to carry the donation boxes and bags to my car so I can drop them off. The guys on receiving dock at charities will unload for me. Sometimes I bring them a bag of candy bars as a thank you. 👍 Re: sorting papers I retired from teaching 3 years ago and have no idea why I thought I needed to keep boxes of lesson plans, junk papers, and (now out of date) books. I finally faced them recently and am so glad to get them out of the house. It was cathartic to say to myself that I released that time of my life and am moving on to my new life.

You have my sympathy. There’s absolutely times when it feels like people are not empathetic and it’s really recognizable compared to people who are approaching your situation with compassion. I try to remind myself that the way they act is about them and the way I react to them is about me. I realized that assuming I understand other people’s motivations and unspoken feelings was a coping mechanism from growing up with abusive parents. It’s taken me years to realize that heightened sense of other people’s intentions was false. I can’t read minds. I was telling myself stories based on past abuse to try to anticipate situations that might be scary or painful. Now unless someone verbally expresses a feeling, I try not to ascribe anything to what I might be perceiving from the way they’re speaking to me. It puts the burden on other people to be clear about their feelings and intentions and it saves me a lot of reactionary stress and anxiety. Right now it’s taking me a conscious effort to let those stories go, but I am hoping in the future it will be more automatic.

Yes. When others come in and judge what has occurred due to illness it makes it VERY DIFFICULT to go forward at all. If instead they asked, "can i help you go through any of this, THAT would be more helpful and might bypass some of the anxiety. I know that that mountain in the living room felt like going backwards and replaced that weight. Im glad you fought through that to the return of cleared space again instead of staying in the dark place. Sometimes motivation is extra Helpful. Having a place for others to get use from our no longer neededs is freeing, isn't it!

I think a person coming in asking "have you considered throwing stuff away" may sometimes work their way up to asking "can I help?" I love decluttering, especially other peoples' stuff (less emotional attachment), but I can't very well walk into am apartment for the first time, look around and say "oh, may I declutter this". Asking whether the owner has considered decluttering might be a way to ask whether they might like help.

Glad to hear that someone is helping you with doing your laundry. 😊 When you get a box empty, break it down right away, being flat takes so much less space. Things donated to a church or salvation army are often used to help others in need...just might give you a better reason to donate. I wonder what that nurse would say now? You decluttered a lot of your house. People in certain jobs are obligated to make sure, in case of an emergency, that there is easy access to rooms used on a daily basis. Those people are NOT judging you, they are explaining to you what NEEDS to happen to make your home SAFE! That's how you need to look at your home...should something happen, can an emergency personal get to you easily. You've done such a wonderful job decluttering, and you seem to be keeping everything clear that you've already cleaned. You just keep doing what you're doing,❤ and soon you'll have the main rooms you live in done! 😊🎉❤

I put off replacing my stove for 2 years, because I didn’t want the delivery people to see how I live. Of course, every day of that 2 years I was telling myself that I’ll get this place cleaned up long enough for a new stove to be delivered. And of course, I always added, “I’ll spend the whole day cleaning Finally, 2 years later, I ordered the stove, and it was delivered into the chaotic disarray I call home. Anyway, in the past week, I finally sorted through all of the boxed stuff around my fireplace. 3 boxes of stuff are going to Goodwill. I just need to put the other things on empty shelves in the designated rooms. But, I lost focus and motivation. Hopefully, Mira’s video will inspire me to finish up. Then I just need to sweep and mop where the stuff was piled. Rambling on and on…. Ok, thank you for sharing with us your decluttering journey. Seeing your determination to keep working on your decluttering, knowing you’re pushing through emotions that I’m letting stop me, and watching you do it all with humor and grace, never fails to inspire me.

Mira! Once you get your closet fixed up, I'd love to see a video where you try out the container concept. Not sure if it'll work for you, but it would sure be nice to know laundry is under control!

I don't know if it's workable for you, but maybe when the clothes come back from being laundered, you could let yourself choose two or three items per pile of your very favorites, and see how that goes as far as having enough room in your closet when done. Of course it depends on the size of the piles you will be sorting through, too. Ultimately, it will be up to you, how you do it, and that's how it should be.

What a great idea to get help with the laundry! I would be overwhelmed by it as well.

Here’s what worked for me in my overstuffed closet. 3 boxes, keep, no keep and maybe. I assure you my ‘maybe’ box filled up fast. I put away the definite yes, got rid of the no’s and resorted the maybe box. Eventually my yes store spot was full and then the maybe’s became no’s since I had already rejected definite yeses for this a few times. It was slow, painful and difficult but overall it worked for me…

Dearest Mira, I want to say I am absolutely proud of you. 🎉 Another thing I want to say is that it may be helpful to you to vertically organize and hang your clothes instead of boxes and shelves with horizontal piles on top of each other. I find the horizontal way causes a lot of shifting and refolding after digging for what you're looking for. It also causes avalanches and mountains of things piled on top of each other. I suggest the clothing you sort through or keep to be hung up on hangers on clothing rods. That way, they are easily seen and pushed aside a few inches without falling. You can temporarily RENT clothing valet bars while you scale down and declutter. In case I'm not making myself clear, I'm talking about the rolling bar racks that are used in stores that hold clothing. I'm looking forward to your next video. Be blessed.

I think you're fabulous Mira. You encouraged me to do a box of paperwork while watching this video. Thank you

honestly I don't think hardly anyone would just throw out a box of their own stuff without looking through it, anxiety or not :) Take your time!

Alright. I’m taking a couple things to the basement and bringing up something I know I want to donate. I’ve been procrastinating on it since Christmas.

Mira, clothing that doesn’t fit well needs to be released to someone it does fit (donate or threads). Take a picture for a memory reminder & celebrate you now have space for things that make you happy NOW. Love on Now Mira & her awesomeness. Past Mira is for remembering fondly, but Now Mira needs to be your focus. ❤

You are making such progress. from the first video I watched until now you are doing more at a time you are determined and it is great! It is also great therapy for not just you but for some of us to talk about these issues, so thank you Mira!

Glad those shoes went to a good cause. I adore little clay as he climbs his stairs 😍 too cute. I think it's a good thing that the handyman is coming. You start filling your wardrobe with a clean slate and then it will be easier to arrange the stuff that doesn't fit in there. Good to see you still peeling away at it Mira. I so look forward to your videos 😃
