Around 33% of a year is spent sleeping if you sleep 8+ hours a day. I'm glad people in the comments convinced you to spend time cleaning your bedroom. You DESERVE a comfortable space to rest.

What I find for myself is that when I've cleared out /some/ stuff, it makes it way less overwhelming for my brain, and then I wind up clearing out more stuff, faster. Its not necessary to do everything all at once and next time you go back to do more, it will be so much easier and even more productive!

Your doing amazing. Remember this is just the first pass. As you go through them again and again you’ll soon realise what your not drawn too. Also the money is gone! You’ve already spent it. Giving someone else the chance to have items they will love is a blessing for you both 💖

It'll end up in the landfill when you're dead anyway. Don't mean that in a mean way but rather the sad fact that the majority of our possessions outlive us.

PLEASE KEEP THE "Me ." shirt! It's even better than "Meh." 😂 It's PERFECT LIKE THAT; I LOVE IT! I am so sorry for the loss of your sweet baby. They enrich our lives immeasurably and their absence makes life so much...dimmer? without them. YOU are so naturally charming and sweet natured and authentic. You have helped me in taking some baby steps toward getting things done... finally. A bunch of "just a little bit" will eventually become, "OMG, look how much has been DONE!". It's the embarrassment and shame that gets me most. But it WILL get better. "Midwest Magic Cleaning" came up in my recommended. He linked "A Beautiful Mess" on their collab and then I found you through her chan. So happy I did! Then I binged your chan and always get a perk up when I see you've posted. Love the crafting you did (the scrapbook page with the motivational saying). Young lady, looks like you've got a future with this here KZbin thing 😂; you grow, girl!

Don't worry about quantities on the first pass, just clear out the easy stuff and congratulate yourself. Once you have finished the first pass, it helps me to sort all the like items together. I count first. If you end up with 60 T-shirts that you want to keep, then you can judge if that is too many for you when they are all in one place. I think about how long I can go without laundry, and how much I want to store. If I can wear a different shirt every day for two months without laundry, that's too many for me. I never allow myself more T-Shirts than fit in one drawer. The drawer is my container. I only have two formal dresses for going out and I kept just three business jackets now that I'm retired. I do feel like if I don't love how it looks on me and I don't feel comfortable in it, I don't want to waste my space on it... I'll always chose a different one when I'm dressing. Keep up the good work!

Hi Mira, I'm a bit late to the party, but I thought I'd offer my perspective on discarding clothing I no longer fit into. Due to severe stress and illness, I put on so much weight that my size doubled. I kept all the clothing from each size that I had bought as my weight went up and up. I reasoned that it would save me money when I lost weight as I wouldn't have to buy clothing in smaller sizes again. Eventually I realised that the clothing was filling in for the promise of losing weight, rather than me actually taking steps to do so. So I donated or threw away everything, even the really nice pieces that I would definitely like to wear again. Getting rid of the clothing that belonged to previous versions of me felt like clearing out the ghosts. You're doing great, btw. May the new year be one of continued renewal for us all!

For laundry: separate into 1 dark wash, 1 white/pastel wash, and 1 bright colour wash (on 40 degrees celcius max). Deep colours like navy blues and deep purples go in the dark wash. Anything that doesn't survive this washing cycle is too high maintenance for my wardrobe :)

Closet tip! 1. Declutter as much as you can in the first pass. 2. Get all the laundry done asap. 3. Sort your clothes into categories, t shirts, long sleeves, etc. 4. Sort the categories by colour. 5. Go through, colour by colour, and decide to keep 1 or 2 max. This is a great way to help you visually see how much you have. Another tip: would you wear that item 30+ times? If yes, keep it. No, you can let it go. Another tip, how frequently do you want to do laundry? You could keep 2x that amount and let go of the rest. For example, weekly laundry, set out what you need for two weeks and let go of the rest. Time out box is also a great idea. Put the stuff in the box, set a reminder on your phone for 6 months and then take the box away if you can’t remember what’s in it when the times up. As you said, takes many passes to get down to the right amount for your life 😁

Hi hon,my way of decluttering is - if it hasn't seen daylight in a year , get rid of it ! There are exceptions for things like funeral ,or ,wedding clothing. As you say also, a bit at a time is best . Otherwise, I hold my husband to these rules too . Works for us anyway . No judgements towards anyone .

I did Mari Kondo about 7 years ago and it did change my life. It definitely took me a couple passes... first pass, 1 year later, 3 years later. And now it's just maintenance. For me, learning what I liked (soft above all) was a game changer. I also had not a number of items to keep, but I only wanted enough items to fill my closet and dresser. No seasonal changing. It took till the second pass to get there. Now when i get something that doesn't fit or is uncomfortable it goes out immediately. And if drawer gets too full it's time to look over it again.

Several Harry Potter quizzes seem to agree that I am definitely Slytherin. Although I am far from ambitious, I do seem oddly in step with descriptions of their resourcefulness and shrewdness. In more tangible terms (for those who enjoy a bit of fun with astrology, tarot, etc.), my Chinese astrological sign is the Snake, and one of my 2 favourite colours is green so I reckon I'm a fit to belong to that house.

First of all, I’m cracking up each time you fold a garment and then toss it across the room! Next, I have ADD too, so I had to implement routines to my closet. For instance, all my hangers match. Once I got control of things, I instituted a ‘one in, one out’ rule. I fudge on that rule once in a while but I generally keep things within reason. I have other closet control methods that I stick to religiously.

You are doing a great job. I'm so happy that your home is becoming more enjoyable for you. Happy Holidays! (I might just be Slitheryn House myself) You could just use graph paper to draw out the room dimensions. Using the graph paper cut little pieces of paper to scale for the furniture pieces that you want to use in the room. Then you can just move the pieces of paper around your drawing of the room until you find an arrangement you like. I've done this for every move I've ever made. A very low tech method that works for me!

I have a closet smaller than yours plus a fairly large dresser. If it doesn’t fit in either of those two places, I don’t keep it. I have three pairs of jeans. I have three pairs of leggings. I have some summer capris. I have a drawer with sweaters, I believe four. I have a drawer of old T-shirts that I wear around the house. I have a drawer of, good T-shirts and tops. In the closet are the blouses dresses skirts jackets. I only shop secondhand 99.9% of the time so it’s a hit and miss process of acquiring new clothing. And if I bring anything in something Hass to leave. And yes, you can have too much of one thing. At one point my closet contained 12 white blouses of which I wore three. so I use that as a criteria to get rid of a bunch of stuff. But I will not have clothing lying around. And it must fit, both my body and my closet.

Yes I do the same. I also remove anything I’m not sure about for a week and see if what I’ve left is enough and adequate. Take a bit of the pressure off. If I haven’t missed them after a week and I’m still not sure I time out for a month or so. It’s often the anxiety of actually letting it all go immediately that causes the stress. Too many decisions all at once.😊

I suggest investing in color catchers to relieve yourself of the worry about clothes bleeding. They work fabulously. If you can't fit into a shirt that you love, your shirt can be turned into a blanket or any number of things. That way you can still hold onto the things you love without taking up so much space.

Lol - if I followed the Mira method of washing I’d only wash once a year! Here’s how I was taught- Coloureds can go in together but wash in cold to be on the safe side (maybe do a small low water level load just for black or denim) Whites together - though they can be washed with sheets (not flannelette ones as they transfer lint) Towels, tea towels dishcloths face washers together. Happy washing Mira!

My friend I applauded you!you deserve a standing ovation you allowed the world to walk into your home. I say this because i too suffered from sometimes severe depression. My home was a total reflection of how i felt inside. I found that as i started to change my home and declutter my depression started to subside. I have now learn that chaos is the cause of my depression. As long as continue to move those mountains as you spoke about in another video that I’m able to at least control the depression and not allow it to control me. So with that being said it was not eaSY when the journey begin but inch by inch day by day i began to find myself again. If i could share one thing with anyone it would be to keep pushing don’t give up. 6 yrs later i now have a clutter free home. When it starts to sneak back in on me i start to fight back. I found that depression was also ruling other places in my life finances, friends relationship and work. i use that same energy to beat it in those areas as well. I admire your strength and your transparency. You are helping so many pe😢ople that are struggling too. You may not let go all the things to begin with but i can say for me after fighting for so long now Ive learn if it doesn’t give me joy then i just let it go! Be blessed my friend you will win this battle and then you be looking for your next mountain to move❤❤❤ Tammy

That hurt me so much to hear that it felt like pschological abuse in the amount that I cant take anymore. I m almost 60 and this has continued all my life. I dont know how it will sound but Have you ever thought it is a luxiery that not everybody has to be able to hurt from a moms loss? I found I needed to wear my clothes again to fully decide what works and what doesn't. Even after I'd tried on and weeded out those that don't fit. Upon wearing the remaining ones, I came across plenty that wasn't comfortable to wear for going about my daily life. So I weeded out a lot more. If I was constantly adjusting it, pulling it down, fiddling with it, then I got rid of it. If I wasn't sure if it really suited me, I got rid of it. Plus some things faded, lost shape, shrunk or went bobbly really quickly, so I decluttered those at the end of each season too. Then there were the ones I had accidents with resulting in a stain or hole, I didn't repair anything I just got rid.

I've been working on decluttering my clothes about 6 months, and I am using the one in one out rule with a twist...every time I add something to my closet, I try to see how many things I can take out. I sorted my clothes into seasons and stashed the off season things in underbed boxes and dresser drawers. Then I started going through the current season clothes and putting hands on one thing at a time and letting go of everything that didn't fit, was stained or worn out first, then the ones I don't really like, then the colors I tend to not wear, then I started wearing everything that was left and making decisions to keep or get rid of after wearing them. I have cut my wardrobe in half already, and still working on cutting it more. I'm going to do it again when I get the next season of clothes out. I have lost about 25 pounds, and I get to let go of the things I'm shrinking out of as well. I have come to understand that I just don't need that many clothes, and if I have less, that means there is less to keep up with and take care of!

I don’t buy lots of clothes and tend to wear them out, but sometimes I buy things online and end up not liking them but not taking the time to return them. I like to donate those to the battered women’s shelter, since I wear large sizes and feel that if someone left their home suddenly without extra clothes, they can always wear donated clothes that are too big, but it’s hard to wear clothes that are too small!

I second a t-shirt quilt! They can be a little pricey, but it was so nice to find a better use for a bunch of shirts I still wanted to keep (usually some kind of merch) but didn't wear 😅

I'm a hufflepuff baby! chill vibes and close to the kitchens :) My main clothes decluttering strategy these days is to force myself to wear something I'm not drawn to (not everyday) and evaluate if I actually like it. I feel like if I'm regularly wearing all of my clothes and enjoying wearing them (and they fit in my closet) then it's fine. Although I do have two big "off season" boxes I keep in another room. It's a process, I'm still working on it

When weeding out clothes, I also do the "doesn't fit" method, but also the "haven't worn in 3 years" one, which I find very effective, and sometimes the "doesn't match any other clothes" one. Re colours, I tend to have a bunch of red clothes and a larger bunch of blue/green ones. (Trousers/leggings grey or black so they match all the tops.) So all the reds go in the wash together, and all the rest can go together as well.

Great job Mira! For me decluttering has been a long exhausting journey! But the rewards of my journey best that exhaustion. I'm able to have my clothes organized and I have less papers. I'm always relooking through my clothes to see if there's anything else that can go. I changed over to slim hangers and this has helped me to save space in my closet. Keep going Mira, you got this!! Continue to declutter a little at a time. This is what I do too when I'm decluttering.

Great job, Mira. I've decluttered a lot of stuff from my home and have learned that decluttering never really stops. If you want to maintain an organized space you have to keep decluttering often. I'm glad you are not pressuring yourself to let everything go all at once because it will get easier to let the 'maybe' items go eventually as you strengthen those decluttering muscles. Clothes have always been a sore spot for me. I was always overweight and growing up I could never find clothes in my size in the junior's section, so I had to shop in the woman's section. I hated it. So when I found stores that sold plus size clothing in adulthood, I would go through the clearance section and buy everything because it was super cheap and could fit. I guess I have this fear that I wont be able to find clothes in my size, which is absurd because I'm usually and XL or 2X, but those feelings are still there. Over the last couple years I've accumulated so many clothes, and I really have a hard time letting them go. I donated most of the things that I don't love and bought because they were a couple bucks, but the rest of the clothes are brand new, I don't hate the prints/styles, and I can wear them, but I just haven't gotten to them yet because of the ridiculous amount of clothes I have to cycle through. On one hand I feel like I should get rid of them because thinking about the volume gives me anxiety, but on the other hand I feel guilty because I know I plan wear them eventually.

I'd make one pass through it all with the obvious "I don't want this" choices going out. Then, you can always make another pass later if you have too much of one color. So, it may help hanging or grouping by color, especially with shirts.

I definitely found that when my standards for quality went up, my impulse shopping of clothing went down. When I find something cute, I immediately check the tag. If it's polyester/ spandex etc, my knee-jerk reaction is BLECH and it's easier to move on. To be real, I intentionally purchased spandex work out clothes last summer, but the reflexive disgust is something I use as a strategy to slow myself down and avoid making a purchase that has not been well thought out. Plus the cost of quality clothing slows one down from being impulsive as well haha

Your doing so well with peeling away the clutter. It's a first pass. I find sometimes it helps to have a friend be there to help distract you so you don't focus so much on how much you let go. Also if getting rid off place in a bag right away. I find if I look at it again I want to keep it 😂. Best of luck and will be waiting for the next one. 😊

1. You are doing a good job on reaching you goals. We love watching you and your progress. It inspires most of us. 2. I agree with the lady about choosing a size container/dresser/ box you feel is a good amount. 3. I now live shopping with the montra..."I either love it or leave it." Full on mirror...full trying the cloths on. If garment needs adjusting or tweaking to make it fit, forget it. You and I are both at an age where the basics are covered, not lets dress only in clothes that make us smile. 3. You are a crafts person...find a iron on H and claim that MEH shirt! I loved it. Totally you. 4. Breaks are good and letting go of so much is hard on the heart and head. Take care of your self.

❤Love your content and clothwash story 😅 to answer your question: I have mainly drawers, filled with T-shirts, pullovers, comfy clothes, socks etc... when these are full I declutter the stuff I like less, Dana calls it the container concept...the drawer défines the boundary and limit what I can keep, the room, the house is a container too, if it is too full with stuff I need to declutter to have space for my daughter and myself and activities we want to do ... 😊

I also have A LOT of clothes I'm trying to downsize. At first, I tried going through my closet and asking all the usual questions - does it fit? have I worn it? Not much left the house. Then I tried decluttering by dividing it into categories. I don't try to declutter pants and shirts together. Instead, I piled up all my T-shirts and decided what fit and which ones were my favourites. It was so much easier to choose when I realized I had 18 (yes 18!) plain black T's. I only kept 3. Pants are next!

So so proud of you dear Mira 👏 I honor your journey ⭐️ my tips for declutter clothes 1 - make categories ex: outfit - shoes - socks & undies & pj s & just home clothes - tshirts & top& hoodies & cardigans etc - dresses - pants & shorts & skirt etc 2- go to the each cathegory and choose a. I like b. I dont like anymore c. I will keep somewhere ells to miss them & maybe wear them again 3 - from I like pile. Choose seasenal occasional items and store the rest of clothes for another season lets say for spring. 4 - here is the more joyfull time: you can make " capsule wardrobe " acc to your taste/color or theme😊 ps: dont push yourself, so we make another round for exampla in second part ot march for spring. I wish to come and help you. Anyway love & support from İstanbul. Thank you friend for sharing your journey. I have empathy for the depression & anxiety & adhd etc. Creative people need minimalism pratice for focusing the life. + I adore your sens of humour😊

For your t shirts that you want to keep but can’t wear you can have “t shirt quilt” made out of them. We took all my daughters high school t shirts and they cut the wording or design to the same size and then sewed them together and then sewed a fleece backing to it. Make sure a very warm blanket for your bed

I think we’ve all been conditioned that we need far more of everything than we really need, for myself I figure how many items I need to wear over a month, with washing them weekly it’s been far,far less than I initially thought. You did great for your first pass, maybe give yourself another month/ 2 months then set a date to do a second pass. Bit by bit you’ll get there.👍🏻😊

Honestly as someone with some disabilities and a fun mix of adhd and autism, i've found hangers in general don't work for me. I'm at this point where I dump things like leggings and socks n stuff in lil cube organizers and sling the tops i use over tension rods. I've accepted that my brain doesn't work the way everyone else's does and hangers are an additional step that I'm unlikely to utilize. I hope you're making your space more accessible to you, and i'm so so so so so proud of the progress you've made. Shit's hard

good job at starting to sort your clothes. doing it a bit at a time is a good idea. i decided that i only need no more than 10 - 14 shirts! i only have about 4 - 5 pairs of pants. and i have a handful of "house dresses". i never wear leggings. i'm not working now and don't know if i will be again. if i do, hopefully will be from home. if we do our laundry once a week or 2 weeks, we only need enough to get thru that amount of time. i used to keep clothes that don't fit anymore too, but have gotten rid of all of those. i haven't lost weight in many yrs and decided if i do, i will buy myself new clothes as reward! to me, clothes aren't that important. i'm not a fashionista. ha i don't even like shopping for them. so, having the space is more important to me. i hope you will keep being diligent at peeling away your items. one other thing that helps me get rid of things i don't absolutely need or love, is the thought of my kids or grandkids having to deal with it when i'm gone. i want to make it easy on them!!
