It's basically a wordplay and it's about the duality of marriage. The lyric builds up as follows: Du - Du hast - Du hast mich. This means: You - You have - You have me. Then it continues: Du hast mich gefragt - Du hast mich gefragt und ich habe nichts gesagt. This translates to: You have asked me - You have asked me and I said nothing. Then comes the big question: Willst du bis der tod euch scheidet, treu sein für allen tagen? This means: Will you, till death do you part, promise to be faithful to each other, in all days? So it's a marriage proposal. The the answer comes Jaaaa...... Nein! Yes..... No! The word play is in the first part where the lyric is still building up: "Du hast". As mentioned it means "You have". But when you write the word "hast" with double ss (Du hasst) it gets a totally different meaning: You hate. The thing is that in spoken word you can not hear whether the word has one s or double ss. It sounds the same in both ways. So when he sings: "Du hast mich", it is open for double interpretation: It can either mean "You have me" or "You hate me". This refers to the duality of marriage, which of course can be very loving and comfortable, but also restrictive and irritating. Of course the double meaning disappears when the sentence is completed, because then the context makes it clear what is being said. I hope this clears it up for you.
@danismithmn10 ай бұрын
@DasTeufelswerkthe English version of the song is just blatantly "You Hate". That's what I remembered from getting the CD originally back in 98. So even though the German lyrics probably aren't that, they leaned into it for English. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hXOXl3Vte7qboZosi=TMrf9sfl8OAp5r9u

In the beginning he sings "Willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet, treue sein für alle Tage?" which means what you said, but lateron (11:15) he sings "Willst du bis zum Tod der Scheide, sie lieben auch in schlechten Tagen?", which means "will you, til death of the vagina, love her also during hard times (or bad days)?" So they constantly play with double meaning of words and love/hate aspects of marriage ... so even the wordplay in "du hast" (you have), "du has(s)t mich" (you hate me), "du hast mich gefragt" (you have asked me) is most certainly on purpose.

@havoc0929 ай бұрын
I think the interpretation bit is correct. In the larger context of the song the build up starts You. You Have. You have me. Think of the intentional layering of this. Why is he so adamantly saying "Nein!". The double meaning creates the duality and explains the 'hell no' attitude if you will. And I would stress that on the first word. Du. That is left hanging there on purpose imo. It's broken down for style certainly to create the sound. But this is a created piece. And when you layer like that it has the effect of telling a broad story with the simplicity of a few words employing the structure and the double meaning to do the work of paragraphs. It creates the tension that the bass line, drums and guitars all function to drive very hard. The keyboardist stands out.. he looks differently and in this tune is providing a Whimsical sound that contrasts with the overwhelming hard driven gravel of this industrial metal piece. So you're getting a package of information that informs and countersupports. So let's rewind again. You. (pause)... why? because it's about her.. not necessarily about them. You. You have. You have me. - He's there and he's there for it but. You. You hate. You hate me. - He's putting up with some crap. Tell me you haven't had one of these where they love you for what you do for them and otherwise you're scenery and or baggage.. a neccessary irritation. You have me questioned - You asked me ..and I did not reply - That's resistance. Remember, he said "you have me" but If he's there fore it and can't bring himself to respond.. more tension cause trouble in paradise. The narration of the vows is a minister presumably, so we're going third person. The question is laid down and the high soft choral response of female voice comes up "YES" which he immediately slaps back down harshly "NO!" Piece it together. That "NO" carried no explanation with it, was forceful, loud and final if not also Triumphant. I've had German; but, I'm not conversational in it fully. Hasst and Hast are pronounced nearly identical. In normal use, they are identical so context is the only thing that separates the two words in normal usage. The play on words is as intentional as the arrangement and the contrast written in the music supporting the words. Further.. this mind moving lyric was imported into the original Matrix movie. The play on words philosophically helped undergird the notions at play within the movie. And frankly, it's what made me buy the soundtrack when combined with Rob Zombie's 'clubbed to death' among others.. it's just a really good soundtrack from a really well made and mind stretching movie. Ultimately the few words uttered in the way they are even repeated amount to less than a book while conveying a book of information in the way they are broken down, layered, etc. It's just a brilliant piece of composition. Knowing nothing about the band for the most part, I don't have anything getting in the way of saying that. It's just brilliant in the same way that Nightwish reinterpreted Phantom of the Opera. I'm not a metal fan. I like some metal; but, these examples show the depth of thought and understanding in presenting and arranging that a lot of people miss with this genre for not stopping to pay attention to it. Hat tip. Cheers!
@ralfhenke81488 ай бұрын
@DasTeufelswerk Not quite! The play on words is the following: They start out with "Du , du has(s)t, du has(s)t mich ... where "Du hasst mich" (with two "s") appears to be a full sentence already, leading you to think that it means "you hate me" (rather than "you have me") DESPITE the title reading "Du hast" with just one "s". Then they extend and complete the actual sentence to read "du hast mich gefragt" (you (have) asked me) "... und ich hab' nichts gesagt." (and I responded nothing). ANd only then comes the section with the wedding vow where the choir (synth) answers "jaaaaaaaaa" (yes) before the band yells the other response "Nein!" (No!). It's not two interpretations but just playing on the pretty much identical sounds of "du hast" and "du hasst" and keeping the listeners minds swithching between the two understandings throughout the song. 😉

I was at the concert on July 31 and the lightning is definitely special effects added in post-production. On the other hand, from the pyrotechnics beat the heat like from a campfire only that 20-30 meters, no wonder they are smeared with fireproof gel.
@philippgams736610 ай бұрын
German here. First of all, all the best to you and your wife +1. Second: those reactions to Rammstein are really nice, I've found myself in a real rabbit hole watching all of them. To clear things up: the lightning bolts are 100% edited in post production. There's another song from this concert movie, where Till has an edited lizard tongue for example. I've seen Rammstein about 7 times, the pyro is real, the electricity is not. Please keep doing this stuff, it's cool to see you guys open your musical horizon to all the heavier stuff.
@BIGxJIMxSLADE10 ай бұрын
Right. Imagine all the electricity coming down onto your sensitive recording and musical instruments. Lol.
@RustyDust1014 ай бұрын
This. The electricity is created as a post-concert effect. Everything else however is real, f'ing real fire. You can feel it throughout the concert hall. It's just friggin insane how hot it gets. That's also why there is the so-called Row Zero right at the front of the dividers, followed by the fire zone (roughly 15 rows back), where it gets REALLY hot.

As usual, Rammstein songs have many interpretations and only Rammstein knows the true meaning behind it, but they never tell and let people fly with their fantasy. One general idea about this song is that yes, it is about wedding vows, he literally sings at some point "will you have me in better and worse, till death us parts" and so on and female voices sing at the back "Ja!" which means yes, but this is cut by male voices which say resolute "Nein!" or no. If you watch the video, it adds some more context too. I would assume - and many do as well - that it's about marriage, but not letting someone to simply take you over, take your world over and force you to change, change what and who you are. In the video you can see how man and woman are together and seems like woman is sending the man over to his friends to, most likely, cancel his relationship with them because he's now married, wife feels that they're not good enough company for him, probably because she doesn't like them, not because they're actually bad influence and so on. So basically, it's a song about staying true to who you are and finding someone who respects that and doesn't want to change you, let's you be who you are. Goes both ways, of course. Oh and yes, as cool as it would have been, the lightning in this video is post production. Rammstein hasn't done that much with lightning because mainly, it's a damn hard thing to control. But fire - fire is real, there's always fire and lots of it, as much as safety rules allow. And in places where safety rules are less limiting, the fire can be really crazy. You can see some concerts in Russia where safety is point no. 99 on the list, there are flames the size of a multi-story building, not only shooting up, but also shooting horizontally over the people. And yes, it is safe, despite all of the fire blasting out everywhere, Rammstein pays close attention to safety, for theirs and that of their fans.

The real translation of DU HAST is "you have". But we also have DU HASST in German, which means "you hate" and is pronounced exactly the same way. Thus, Rammstein voluntarily does a play on words. In the beginning you don´t have a clue if it is one or the other. Only when he sings on, you dig that it is "you have". .................... and please call them RUM-SHTINE like in SUN-SHINE 🙂

Hi Guys, my Name is Stephan. I’m from Hamburg in Germany. I love watching your reaction videos. I’m trying to explain it to you from my point of view. The text for "Du Hast" by Rammstein is from the point of view of an ex-lover who looks back on the relationship and asks the others if he would still be so loyal and devoted to his partner if they were still together. The chorus asks the question: "Will you stay with me until death separates us; will you remain faithful to me all the days of our lives?" The "yes no" essentially says that the answer is "no", which indicates that the partner is not as loyal and faithful as he once claimed. The song is a reflection on relationships that ultimately cannot withstand, and the feeling of disappointment in love that arises from this realization. Many Greetings from Germany ✌️
@arnonyhm405510 ай бұрын
"Du hast" and "Du hasst" sounds identical. If you just hear it, the context make the difference. And here again 😉 my short explanation of the lyrics: The first three words are "Du hast mich" (you have me) which at that moment doesn't make any sense in German. But it sounds (intentionally) the same as "Du hasst mich" (you hate me). Later in the song, the first three words are extended to a full sentence: "Du hast mich gefragt und ich hab nichts gesagt." (You asked me and I did not answer.) And then, to show what he was asked, the chorus is a wedding vow: "Willst Du bis der Tod euch scheidet treu ihr sein für alle Tage?" (Do you want to be faithful to her for all days until death do us part?) This is answered first by a kind of female voice "Ja" (yes) and afterwards by Till's harsh voice "Nein!" (No!). These - plus a slightly obscene word play on the wedding vow, that I will not explain here - are the whole lyrics (repeated a few times). As mentioned in the "making of" of that song it's about the connection within the band. They never had a line-up change since their start in 1994. The lead gitarrist once said, the band is like a marriage without sex.

I am german. When he only sings the words: du hast mich, everyone is thinking that he means: you hate me. Its right, that it also can mean: you have me, but nobody says only the words: du hast mich and means: you have me. But together with the Word: gefragt, the meaning changes: du hast mich gefragt: you have asked me. Rammstein loves to play with the language. Speaking off language: Sorry for my english.

You showed this clip to so many people now. It is time that you understand the meaning of this song : The girly is making the proposal and he says nothing / NO! (you have asked me...)=(Du hast mich gefragt...) And that is why Till sings most of the time "Du hasst mich" = you hate me (because of refusing the proposal). Most of the other lyrics is than the text the pastor is reciting during the ceremony (with some extreme alterations that an american should not understand ;) )

To make this absolutely clear: it doesn't mean anything special that this is the director's cut, there is no other cut of this concert movie physically released.! The only different version was the one that was shown in cinemas prior to the physical release. The cinema version was only 90 minutes long and consisted of only 16 tracks, the physical release has all 22 songs. Visually and artistically there is no difference between the cinema version and the physical release. The director's cut is the complete concert movie released on dvd/bluray, the cinema version was just cut shorter. The tesla coil lightnings are not real, they were added as an effect in post production. Same goes for Till's reptile tongue in another song and an overall color and sound enhancement. Everything else is captured live during two shows and one rehearsal at the 'Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy' (later renamed to Accor Arena) in 2012 with over 20.000 people in attendance at each show. During the rehearsal all close-ups were captured, so that the shows didn't get interrupted by cameras and camera men working directly in front of the band members. This award-winning (UK Music Video Awards 2017 for 'Best Live Concert') concert movie was filmed and directed by famous swedish movie and music video director and also grammy award winner Jonas Åkerlund. 30 cameras were used at each live show, plus another 10 cameras at the rehearsal - which made a total of 70 different camera angles for the concert movie. Åkerlund is best known for directing the music videos to Madonna's 'Ray Of Light' and 'Music', Prodigy's 'Smack My Bitch Up', Jamiroquai's 'Canned Heat' and Metallica's 'Whiskey In The Jar'. He also did a bunch of Rammstein's music videos (Pussy, Ich tu dir weh, Mann gegen Mann, Mein Land) and a lot of commercials for Sony, Ikea, Hugo Boss and Coca-Cola. Åkerlund also directed the movies Spun (2002), Horsemen (2009), Lords Of Chaos (2018) and Polar (2019). yeah, they do have tesla coils but the lightning doesn't go down to the keyboard, that would fry everything, so the bolt to the keyboard is put in in post. and congrats with the mini-pegasus! I truly hope all goes well

The lightning effects are most likely post production effects. If the lightning didn't shoot out straight from Flake's fingers i would've belived it was produced on stage.

And mind you, this is in Paris. So the people in the audience is french-speaking. The public going along with a German band is something to behold in the first place. It is not like these nations or languages were friends for any stretch of history. (though we are all in Nato now)

Speaking with my German friends there’s many interpretations back and forth. It’s a play on his old GF asking will you marry me and BF going no because you have me. It flips backwards and forwards and loops around like the angst and interplay of that question within relationships. ❤ do you hate me? No you have me 🤷♂️

The pronunciation of "hasst" and "hast" is identical, despite spelled differently, this is why it is used in the lyrics. Since in spoken language spelling doesn't matter: the sentence structure decides what "du hast mich" in spoken language means. "du hasst mich" without any following verb means "you hate me", BUT "du hast mich [ANY ACCUSATIVE VERB]" means "you have [VERB] me". That is because "hasst" is a VERB, and "hast" is an ADVERB. Adverbs are used in combination with a following verb, so "... hast ... [VERB]" makes "hast" to an adverb, and means "have". Pin/like the comment if you find this helpful, so others can benefit from it.

You want a full breakdown? Here you go: (4x) Du, du hast, du hast mich - You, you have, you have me => You already know about the play on words. The correct spelling of 'hate me' should be 'hasst mich' (which is pronounced with a longer, harder 's'), but it is pronounced purposefully in a way that you can interpret it both ways. There is also the possible meaning of "having someone" in a different way (like having their way with someone). The repetition in itself can be something you might interprete in a way, if you like. Du, du hast, du hast mich, du hast mich - You, you have, you have me, you have me Du hast mich gefragt, du hast mich gefragt - You have asked me, you have asked me Du hast mich gefragt und ich hab nichts gesagt - You have asked me and I said nothing. => This one only has the double meaning in the context of the full lyrics. It is implying many different possible questions (wedding proposal, marriage vow, any form of communication between the pair) and obvious indifference of one side. It doesn't have to be connected to marriage, it is only implied by the reference to the marriage vows. Willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet - Do you want until death does part you Treu ihr sein für alle Tage? - Be faithful to her for all days (2x) [Ja] Nein! - [Yes] No! => This is the first important cultural / language difference. The traditional German version translates to "until death parts you", which is the same expression as divorcing but is closer to "divide". So once again it is playing with the possible meanings of the expression. The second line is more obvious but also adds in additional meaning if you change what the context is. It can be part of the wedding vow but also a more general question. The Yes! - No! is not just showing a difference in intentions but, by repeating it, there is an implication of a argument. Which adds in not just the meaning of this being a hypotetical conversation before a marriage but also an argument within a marriage because of unfaithful behaviour. Willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet - Do you want until death does part you Treu ihr sein für alle Tage? - Be faithful to her for all days (2x) [Ja] Nein! - [Yes] No! => The repetion itself can also have additional meaning. It can be a different point in time (so before and during the marriage for example) with changed meaning or a repetition of the former argument. Or it is implying that, despite one person declining, the other is pressing on. (2x) Du, du hast, du hast mich - You, you have, you have me => one could possibly point at less repertition of the "having" being relevant in some way. ;-) As a hint of less feelings and more indifference. If you look at how soft the music is compared to the former repetitions.. there might be something to that tought. Du, du hast, du hast mich, du hast mich - You, you have, you have me, you have me Du hast mich gefragt, du hast mich gefragt - You have asked me, you have asked me Du hast mich gefragt und ich hab nichts gesagt - You have asked me and I said nothing. => Once again, despite repetition being what a chorus is about, but, as with the last part, the music is different. It's even more like a build up. Like the whole think comes down to the last part (and the question it asks). Willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet - Do you want until death does part you Treu ihr sein für alle Tage? - Be faithful to her for all days (2x) [Ja] Nein! - [Yes] No! => basically the same as before, just with the difference of having of the former buildup. Willst du bis der Tod der Scheide - Do you want until death of the v-word Treu ihr sein für alle Tage? - Be faithful to her for all days (2x) [Ja] Nein! - [Yes] No! => Another wordplay which adds in a whole lot of nuance to the possible meanings. Meanings you don't get in an english version since there is no other meaning to the thing it is referencing. In German "Scheide" can be part of the female anatomy but it is also taken from the same root as "scheiden", so it goes back to the meaning of "divide". It is also the word for scabbard or sheath or even an old expression for a border (that divides two lands from each other). So while the sexual meaning is the most obvious (and is a reason why "you have me" can be legitimately interpret as intercourse) you can go wild with this one. If you hate your mother-in-law and you think she is the one dividing your relationship.. could just put that meaning in np. :P Willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet - Do you want until death does part you Treu ihr sein für alle Tage? - Be faithful to her for all days (2x) [Ja] Nein! - [Yes] No! => just adding that the last word is NEIN! ^,^

As a german, let me try to translate it. And you can not tell if it is supposed to mean "have", "hate" or "got" - but i think i'm getting pretty close to it. And maybe as hint about that playing with words... i guess in english "got me" could mean you found out i cheated, as well as i am yours now. YOU, you got - you got me. YOU, you got - you got me. YOU, you hate - you hate me. YOU, you hate - you hate me. You, you got, you hate me, you have - (me). You (have/)asked me, you asked me - you asked me - and i said nothing. Do you want until death does you part, be faithfull for all days? - Yeaaaaaah - NO! - Yeaaaaaah - NO! Do you want until death does you part, be faithfull for all days? - Yeaaaaaah - NO! - Yeaaaaaah - NO! You, you hate, you hate me. You, you hate, you hate me. You, you got, you got me. You, you got, you got me. Do you want until death does you part, be faithfull for all days? - Yeaaaaaah - NO! - Yeaaaaaah - NO! Do you want until the death of the vulva, be faithfull for all days? - Yeaaaaaah - NO! - Yeaaaaaah - NO! Do you want until death does you part, be faithfull for all days? - Yeaaaaaah - NO! - Yeaaaaaah - NO!

Du Hast means you have. There is no word play. Du haßt/hasst means you hate. It starts with "du hast" and builds up to "du hast mich gefragt und ich hab' nichts gesagt". It's a continuum. "Willst du bis der Tod euch scheidet treu ihr sein für alle Tage?" is pretty straight forward. It's about a declined wedding vow.

LOL! Nap time! Let's do some reactions! Happy wife. Happy life. Reminds me when my wife was pregnant with our son 10, almost 11, years ago: I introduced my not so innocent anymore Mormon wife to so much that just got her in the feels! I took my wife to Nightwish while she was 5ish month pregnant and then Sonata Arctica 2 months later and junior was trying to be a track star on her bladder. The venue was standing only (Yes, I made sure she knew and was onboard before I booked and said it would be awesome!) in Anaheim, CA, USA, and my amazing wife was amazing and asking when we can see them again! I paid for literal front row center stage so my amazing wife could get the full experience without anything getting in that--she' is short...actually, travel size for my convenience--and those few last date nights before our son was born, seeing my innocent wife come out of her shy shell and rock out, well, just like when I told her it was ok to go out with her church friends as long as I don't see Mormon girls gone wild on the 10 o'clock news, have fun! Seeing her having a great time while carrying our son was when I got THE confirmation I married the right woman for life. Wife I met her first. Anyway....guess what: after he was born, colicy son would only fall asleep when Nightwish was played--and, yes, it was Imaginarium! LOL! LOVE it! Oh! "I'm sure they've done an interview!" God love your beautiful wife. Give her our love from these internet strangers. You got an awesome one!

“Is he on a treadmill?” --- A Dutch interpretation of ‘Du Hast’ --- - The man / the men / the band sing: Du (You) Du hast (You have) // Du hast … (You have … ) // Du hasst (You hate) // Du hasst … (You hate …) # The ‘s’ is longer, so he is singing ‘You hate’ Du hast mich (You have me) // Dus hast mich … (You have … me) // Du hasst mich (You hate me) # Again, the ‘s’ is long, but a little bit shorter than before, so he is singing ‘You hate me’ or ‘ You have me’ or ‘You have … me’ Du hast mich gefragt (You have asked me) # The meaning is clear and the ‘s’ is also shorter. Und ich hab nichts gesagt (And i said nothing) # So, in other words, the man tells the woman: You asked me to marry you and I did not answer and you hate me for it. And yet you have me. # Then they end up at the wedding anyway. - The man / the men / the band sing what a wedding officiant would ask him and not her: Willst du, bis der Tod euch scheidet, treu Ihr sein für alle Tage? (Will you, till death do you part, be faithful to her every day?) - While not being asked, the Woman / the women / the choir answers the wedding officiant: Ja (Yes) - The man / the men / the band answers the wedding officiant: Nein (No) # So, not only has he not answered her when she asked him to marry her, but he also left her 'at the altar' so to speak. All the more reason for him to think she hates him. She is also answering questions meant for him in his place, which would make him not want to marry her. # Fun fact 1: In one of the verses he does mix it up with this: Willst du bis zum Tod der Scheiden, Sie lieben auch in schlechten Tagen? (Will you till the death of the pussy, also love her on bad days?) # A play on words looking and sounding similar: ‘Tod euch scheidet’ and ‘Tod der Scheiden’ # Fun fact 2: I think I hear him, without the microphone, tell the audience: Schlampe (Slut) or Schlampen (Sluts). So he is either referring to the bitch that will not leave him alone about not marrying her and taking over his life, or he is calling the audience ‘bitches’. # Edit: I do hear him sing in one of the verses: "Willst du, bis der Tod euch scheidet, treue sein für alle Tage? (Will you, till death do you part, be loyal every day?)"

The confusion with the you have and you hate, comes from a concert where Till sang half of the song in English and sang You hate. The song is buried deep in You tube somewhere.
