This track was actually a dig at their label, Billy had submitted some really good music but the studio wanted something more poppy and catchy that they could radio release for the album hence "the world is a vampire" and "still just a rat in a cage"
@emerje018 күн бұрын
Yep, and this song was a real hit for them, but the execs still insisted he do more poppy songs.
@aginaz18 күн бұрын
@@emerje0 SP basically wrote this as an FU to the suits and it did exactly what the suits thought it would do and was a hit. That has to hit like an F ME moment which makes the lyrics even more poignant - "despite all the rage I am still just a rat in the cage."

well in reality the execs were right, way too much of this record was boring lullabys that put you to sleep, there was about 3/4 a disc of quality material on this album and it didnt come close to siamese dream in terms of quality

It reminds me of the song Dye Eir von Saton from Tool (misspelled on purpose because of YT). From what I read Maynard made it as an fu to his label as well. He wanted to do a cover of a Led Zepplin song and the label told him if he did it wouldn't count toward the album and he wouldn't get paid for the album. So he made a song with loud scratchy industrial sounds, thumping bass drum and a dude reciting a cookie recipe in German to make it sound like there's singing. Maynard is such a troll to douchy suits.😁

You should honestly listen to the entire album that this is on, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. It is one of those albums i would call 10/10, it has a flow to it, from a classical piano start straight into very heavy guitars, and then it chills back out only to get heavy again, it's really something else, and this is just one piece of that wonderful pie.

Introduction to Psychology 101 at LeMoyne College. One of the first days. We had to analyze this song. Look at the contrasts. Bullet; destructive, heavy, strong. Butterfly wings; beautiful, light, fragile/delicate. Wants to be seen. Wants to be special. No matter how hard he tries, he is still in a prison in his own mind. He tries to change, but without people believing in him he can’t believe in himself and defaults to what he knows. Rage, frustration, failure. Wants to be free but can’t get there on his own and thinks he never will.

Have seen them live twice, and in my years at university, this song was a frequent hit on the "disco"-playlist during events. Long time SP Fan here. The album that this song is on is actually part of a trilogy that the band wrapped up a couple years ago. He’s singing in a perspective of a Character named Zero. I highly recommend listening to the full albums: Mellon Collie… MACHINA ATUM ATUM is probably the most interesting to me. Full blown rock opera and actually about the world’s view of politics and how social media and news affects the current generation of young adults. Id do some really good listening and analyzing and you’ll get a full picture and story. And the story is left open to be continued. It’s very hard to explain it in a few words. It’s quite brilliant.

At a time when most CDs were $12-15 this double album for under $20 was absolutely insane value especially for being so densely packed with great music. Their previous album was fairly different but not what the label considered marketable so this song is largely about being conformed into what the industry wanted. The reference to Job from the Bible suffering under the will of the one controlling his life really adds the imagery of the song.
@DarkAngel1985MikeАй бұрын
Billy originally had long hair when the band first started, then he cut it shorter like in this video which was I think the first music video and single from the album and then he shaved his head which is seen in later videos like Zero,1979 and Tonight Tonight

great song one of SP's best with an awesome video too, I appreciate your clarifying the lyrics too (and Jimmy Chamberlain on drums always went so hard ❤🔥) ... you could probably tell from Billy Corgan's lyrics and from how he sings these words that to a degree, especially with how he's talked about record labels and the nature of manipulation to keep artists within the umbrella of the music industry even recently, "being a rat in a cage" being told "you're the chosen one the only one" wanting to change but "can you fake it for just one more show" feeling a bit like "old Job" (or like Jesus for some rockstars!) that these things were weighing on Corgan's mind especially when this album came out in 1996 (Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, 2 hour double album that sold millions at peak SP popularity!) this song is great I love the tunes you're selecting to react to, keep it up 🔥🔥

On this song, It was the anthem of the 90's generation of kids and young adults who were all working their low payed jobs being treated badly like slaves, payed minimum wages and felt trapped in those jobs. The listeners felt what Billy Corgan must have felt, angry, trapped and ashamed by being controlled by the bosses who payed them. That's why the lines in the bridge go like this " Tell me I'm the only one Tell me there's no other one Jesus was an only son, yeah Tell me I'm the chosen one Jesus was an only son, for you" The band was being chastised for turning kids Satanic by Cristian groups and Media outlets for wearing Black clothing and dark make-up, looking like Goth's or Emo's. A bit like what happened to Marilyn Manson. "Tell me I'm the only one Tell me there's no other one" Was Billy saying we know we aren't the only ones being screwed over by greedy corporates. Or being judged by the way we look.... The last line "Jesus was an only son, for you" !!! to me says, what about all the other children you are disregarding, leaving behind, judging them like the Romans did to Jesus, while treating these kids who might dress different to you like poo, is that really the Cristian thing to do.. It was an Ironic Jab or Punch to the face of those who pretended to believe or say one thing while acting the complete opposite way, for their own personal gain, especially money wise.....
