My uncle was the most recent, from Mexico City, but my mother’s family came from Germany via Canada. Three brothers going through the immigration lines to end up with three different spellings of the same last name 🇺🇸⚓️🇺🇸 back in 1910. My grandmother was born in Detroit in 1911. Both integrated and relinquished citizenship to any other country. However I think that my uncle did it a tad differently by making sure that his kids (and cousins) had Spanish in the home just as much as English. My grandparents parents said we in America now speak only English. And I didn’t really think I missed out on anything until I had children of my own and could not pass on to them the German language.

@terri24945 ай бұрын
I second the recommendation of “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers”. A little background on the song: Neil wrote it and released it as a solo. Barbra then did a cover version. A DJ spliced the two versions together and played it on the radio and people loved it. Neil and Barbra, who went to the same high school and were in choir together, then recorded it as duet. Neil had a busy schedule and I don’t think he usually went to awards shows. Barbra developed severe stage fright early in her career and for 27 years she rarely performed in public. At the 1980 Grammy Awards there was a commercial break and then a few moments of silence. Without an announcement, two figures emerged from opposite sides of the stage, walking towards each other and into the light. It was a total surprise, and when the audience realized it was Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand they went nuts. That’s the performance to watch.

Neil Diamond, also called the Jewish Elvis, is doing it in very different ways. Check out his catalogue and you'll see what I mean. One the finest singer-songwriters in the history of modern music (more than 130 million albums sold worldwide), one of the best and most distinctive voices in pop/rock music and one of the most charismatic, dynamic and successful performers ever, who used to break attendance records wherever he performed! As for the song, Neil's grandparents were immigrants, from Poland on his father's side and Russia on his mother's. So, like many of his songs, it's largely autobiographical. If you want to get to know Neil Diamond, just listen to his songs.

My paternal grandparents came from Portugal to Ellis Island and my maternal grandfather came from Norway to Ellis Island. I am only a second generation American. It was the land of opportunity to those in the 1920's coming over via boats. America is still a dream for most immigrants.

Hope and optimism were at a premium after Viet Nam and Watergate and the draft and drug war. The first time I heard it on the radio I knew from the intro it was Neil Diamond. Freedom is a human right-and so is the right to one’s property and due process.

🇺🇸❤️🤍💙!! My mom used to cry when this played. She would dance in the kitchen and play this, she was so proud! My great grandparents were immigrants from 🇮🇪Ireland(both sides). This was one of the best movies!! I saw him in concert 3x in one year with an ex-boyfriend who loves Neil, so amazing!! This song is for all those who came here through Ellis Island(mostly), looking for the land of opportunity❤. I think this is a perfect song for Trump!🥰 2 of his wives were legally immigrated here and he’s all about America!!🇺🇸 He lives for and loves his country! ❤ I love America!

The second time I saw him my sister and I were in the nosebleed section, on the back row. The ceiling of the stadium sloped down and I could reach up and back and touch it while sitting in my seat. I had binoculars so I didn’t mind. That’s funny about you getting red wine spilled on your boots. Prior to that concert I had wondered if Neil was offended at the reggae version of “Red, Red Wine”. He sang it that night and then busted into a rap about how people asked if it bothered him. The only lyrics I remember are the last line: “I don’t care ‘cause they’re playing my song!” I didn’t know at the time that he had started out as a songwriter. What a great showman he was! 💕

Neil Diamond wrote this and several other songs for his film acting debut, The Jazz Singer (1980). The film was not well received, but the soundtrack was a huge success. Neil starred as Jess Robin, real name Yusel Robinovich, a cantor for his synagogue in New York, who dreams of being a singer and songwriter in modern music. He is supposed to take the place of his father as a cantor, but he wants more and he does what he can to make a new life for himself. It was the third version of the story...the first version was the first talking movie ever made starring Al Jolson in 1927. The old man in the yamulke is Lord Laurence Olivier, one of Britain's greatest Shakespearean actors and filmmakers playing Neil's father, Cantor Robinovich. The young woman next to him is Lucie Arnaz, daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, as Molly, Neil's love interest in the film. Several songs from the film are just as fire as this one: "Love On the Rocks", "Hello Again", "Hey Louise", and "Summerlove". When Neil made the film, he was one of the biggest acts in the world. He's a great singer, songwriter, and performer...but not so much an actor. I think he won the Worst Actor Razzie Award for the film. Personally, I love the film and have since I was a kid back in the 80s.

Both of my parents were immigrants, and they were both 9 when they immigrated with their parents. My dad immigrated from Poland in 1949, and my mom from Germany (via Belgium) in 1956. I've recently been tracing my family genealogy and figuring out more of where my roots are (I was mostly raised by my German grandmother, so I really only knew about her family). Diving into the Polish side of my heritage has been really fascinating. Also, I absolutely love Neil Diamond. I grew up listening to his music (my mom and grandmother were both fans of his). My favorite song of his is "Forever in Blue Jeans," but "America" has always been up there on my playlist as well.

This is one of the final scenes from the Jazz Singer which came out in 1980- My Mom was an absolute ND fan and when my Dad refused to go to the concert with her she wrangled me at the ripe old age of 10 and one of her friends to go with her. Over the years we saw him... I think 3 or 4 times and even the last time we saw him when I was in my teens my dodgy old goth self had a ball - the man is a hell of an entertainer.

My mama *loved* Neil Diamond, she went almost apoplectic when she heard UB40s Red, Red, Wine, I mean wow the rant she went on and I remember that from back in the 80s. It was that memorable of a rant. Forever In Blue Jeans was one of her favorites as it is mine. He wrote a lot of the songs that The Monkees sing.

Neil Diamond was a little before my time but this song is epic. This was released in 1980, when Reagan was elected and optimism exploded in the U.S. The world wanted everything American - blue jeans, Coca Cola, etc. This song was a perfect fit for the spirit of the times.

LOL Love Sweet Caroline... of course.. my Dad used to sing it to me all the time.. He loved Neil Diamond.. this song is from his movie The Jazz Singer.. its a great movie as well. His father disowned him because he wanted him to become a Rabbi, they were Jewish.. He wanted to be a singer... great watch... I so identify with this song because my husband came to America from Cuba the year after Castro took it over, at that point he was letting people leave. Not in a nice way tho.. my husband was 8 at the time.. It was very rough for his famiy for many years but they survived it and eventually thrived. I hope things get easier/better for you and your family.. I know how hard life can be at times..
