I was raised by my Father who didn't have a clue what to do with a daughter, so he taught me everything he would teach a son. Part of that was to always stand up for myself. Violence is never right, but sometimes there are no options left. If something has to be done, don't b1tch and moan about it, just get your head down and get it done. Most importantly he taught me to be strong and respect myself. So I agree, there are a lot of value in what a good Father can teach, and show by example to their daughters. He also taught me DIY, brick work and basic plumbing, but that's a different story.

Teach your daughter’s to defend themselves, and always back them up. Girls get bullied by other girls and they can be viscous. You have to have principles and the one my dad taught me was that anyone who would stand by and watch another person being violated was the worse kind of coward. I watched him on several occasions come to the aid of a person who was being either verbally or physically tortured . He wasn’t extreme in his actions but he stopped the situations. He didn’t do it for fame or show, he did it as a human being and quietly walked away. He once put his boot in the backside of a man who was kicking and stomping on a dog who just wandered into his yard. Those were the times I was most proud to be his daughter. RIP Daddy.

You interpreted the song exactly as Kenny wanted you to, and that's the reason Kenny Rogers is so beloved by so many people - his true gift as a storyteller. The parts in this song that really resonate with me, is when he goes down an octave during the serious parts in the track "and there was 3 of them" and "you could hear a pin drop when Tommy turned and locked the door". This is the brilliance in the song and how he sings it, he takes the emotion and drags it out of you as a listener. I actually welled up a bit watching your reaction to what happened to Becky and talking about relating that fear for you and protecting your family. This is what great music does, it makes you feel something. You really should review "Lady" by Kenny as well, it would be a beautiful tribute to your wife. You will know what I mean once you've heard it...

I knew as a child, what happened to Becky, and also that Tommy went in and killed all of those men. I have never condoned violence but grew up knowing that Tommy did what he had to. It occurs to me as an adult, that maybe, growing up understanding these life lessons, that we shield our children from, gave me many of my core values and maybe some of these songs would be beneficial to the new generation. Kenny Rodgers was one of the best. I actually saw him in concert many years ago. Please continue with your reactions. Just because you don't have a son doesn't mean you can not teach your daughters how a boy ( man ) should treat them! Tell them to not just settle for someone. That person should love and protect them always!!!! ♥

When I was a kid my siblings and I were obsessed with this song! We played it repeatedly on an old 45. Yeah, I'm that old...lol. But I got to hear it when it originally came out. Kenny Rogers music is still incredible!!

We had to wait so long, but it was worth it.

Kenny came humble beginnings, growing up in the projects somewhere in Texas. Great singer and great man.

In early 2000's I saw Kenny Roger's in a small concert (less than 2000 people). Best concert ever. I was sitting within 15 feet of him. Such a great performer.

This is my favorite Kenny song and there are a lot of them. I remember playing this on a 45 when I was like 4 years old on my parents big cabinet record player. ❤

A movie was made of this song back in the 1980's. Kenny Rogers was in it.

Man, this song got to me. The story telling is so good, and it brings back so many good and bad memories. I grew up in a rough neighborhood, and being the smallest kid around, I got robbed and beaten up daily. My dad's answer to it was to make me carry rocks and chop wood with an axe that was almost as big as me. He didn't want me to get into fights. He WORKED me strong. By the time was 14 years old I was still the smallest kid around. I weigh only 110 lbs, but I could easily lift and carry over 240lbs. So one day my dad were working, chopping down trees, and he sent me to the shop to buy lunch. Only a few houses from where he was working, I got stopped and slapped around by 4 kids... one spit in my face. I was fuming inside, but walked away. My dad just stood there and watched. When I got back I could see the disappointment in his face. The only thing he said was "you never let another person do that to you ever again". I walked back and beat the snot out of them and nobody ever bullied me again. I agree with you. Walking away when you can is always better and will keep you out of trouble, but if you lay hands on me, I'll fight back. And if you harm my family, you better go where I can never find you.

Kenney is the best! More people these days should listen to Kenny's life lessons. I think America could use a little backbone these days.

Thank you for standing as a man. We need more of you.😊 Edit: teach your daughters what a man is. Take them on dates. Teach them what not to accept.
