I was raised by my Father who didn't have a clue what to do with a daughter, so he taught me everything he would teach a son. Part of that was to always stand up for myself. Violence is never right, but sometimes there are no options left. If something has to be done, don't b1tch and moan about it, just get your head down and get it done. Most importantly he taught me to be strong and respect myself. So I agree, there are a lot of value in what a good Father can teach, and show by example to their daughters. He also taught me DIY, brick work and basic plumbing, but that's a different story.

@@MrBoyneboy There's a saying that goes something like, "Beware the rage of a quiet man." It's the men who don't do anything and take the abuse over time where the anger builds until it just explodes. Teach your daughter’s to defend themselves, and always back them up. Girls get bullied by other girls and they can be viscous. You have to have principles and the one my dad taught me was that anyone who would stand by and watch another person being violated was the worse kind of coward. I watched him on several occasions come to the aid of a person who was being either verbally or physically tortured . He wasn’t extreme in his actions but he stopped the situations. He didn’t do it for fame or show, he did it as a human being and quietly walked away. He once put his boot in the backside of a man who was kicking and stomping on a dog who just wandered into his yard. Those were the times I was most proud to be his daughter. RIP Daddy.

You interpreted the song exactly as Kenny wanted you to, and that's the reason Kenny Rogers is so beloved by so many people - his true gift as a storyteller. The parts in this song that really resonate with me, is when he goes down an octave during the serious parts in the track "and there was 3 of them" and "you could hear a pin drop when Tommy turned and locked the door". This is the brilliance in the song and how he sings it, he takes the emotion and drags it out of you as a listener. I actually welled up a bit watching your reaction to what happened to Becky and talking about relating that fear for you and protecting your family. This is what great music does, it makes you feel something. You really should review "Lady" by Kenny as well, it would be a beautiful tribute to your wife. You will know what I mean once you've heard it...

It occurs to me as an adult, that maybe, growing up understanding these life lessons, that we shield our children from, gave me many of my core values and maybe some of these songs would be beneficial to the new generation. He asked me why I wouldn't stand up for my sister, whom they had preached my entire life that I couldn't hurt! I flat out told him, she had always understood that I couldn't hurt her, but she could hurt me, so in my underdeveloped mind at the time, I was allowing them to hurt her to satisfy a desire! My father understood, but still instructed me that "our" problems exist inside of a family structure. I love my sisters! He was a book reader and science nut. My grandfather was the boxer! He on the other hand mainly threw punches and lost many jobs due to his behavior. Understanding one's self is key! We're the last of genx my friend! Our time is still now! In early 2000's I saw Kenny Roger's in a small concert (less than 2000 people). Best concert ever. I was sitting within 15 feet of him. Such a great performer.

OMG I haven't heard that song in ages. Old Kenny pulled out some class tunes. I think this is a song any parent can relate to, and can anyone that has had someone "wrong" the love of their life!

This song really hit home for me... because my Daddy was always in my life and never backed down when it came to protecting me or my mother and my daughters father walked out on her and me so I have to be the father and the mother for my daughter !! And I will hurt anyone when it comes to my daughter!! ❤

Damn song gives me chills every damn time I hear it. Just like you said no singer tells a story like kenny rogers. Hes actually done a few movies and they're amazing.

You can teach them how they deserve to be treated with respect by how you treat them, how you treat their mother, how you treat your mother and how you treat and talk about women in general.

This was always my favorite Kenny Roger's song. For me it's easier to turn the other cheek when it's directed at me & not my loved ones. It helps knowing God has my back, even if it's not as quickly as I'd like. Save it all for your grandsons! 🙂

You are teaching and reaching more young men than you realize. Never forget that, continue to lead by example you never know who is watching. It truly does take a village. Thank you and GOD bless

I am glad you caught that, "if you can". Sometimes, thankfully rarely, you have no choice

Old country music singers and songwriters were always great storytellers.
