The best part of the "Devil Music" assumption is the fact that this song is practically a hymn. Hallowed Be Thy Name starts slow and mournful with an unnamed convict in his cell facing the last day of his life, as he’s scheduled to be hanged today: I'm waiting in my cold cell when the bell begins to chime Reflecting on my past life and it doesn't have much time 'Cause at 5 o'clock, they take me to the Gallows Pole The sands of time for me are running low Running low, yeah! The song picks up pace as the priest arrives to administer last rights, and a side-by-side journey begins for the condemned - on one side his physical walk to the courtyard to face the hangman, and on the other a spiritual journey from terror to anger to serenity to acceptance and finally joy. It’s in that second journey, and especially in it’s conclusion that the “devil music” assumption falls apart. When the priest comes to read me the last rites Take a look through the bars at the last sights Of a world that has gone very wrong for me Can it be that there's some sort of error? Hard to stop the surmounting terror Is it really the end, not some crazy dream? As the Convict tells us what he’s thinking the music becomes an inexorable march. The Convict’s terror comes through in denial, but the beginning of peace begins to creep in as he professes his faith Somebody, please tell me that I'm dreaming It's not easy to stop from screaming The words escape me when I try to speak Tears flow, but why am I crying? After all, I'm not afraid of dying Don't I believe that there never is an end? He’s not there yet. He still has some anger and frustration to work out: As the guards march me out to the courtyard Somebody cries from a cell, "God be with you" If there's a God, why has he let me go? The music continues its force march forward as the Convict examines his live and begins to arrive at serenity: As I walk, my life drifts before me Though the end is near I'm not sorry Catch my soul, it's willing to fly away From there, his faith takes over and he feels truly prepared. His early declaration that he’s not afraid is given reason and conviction: Mark my words, believe my soul lives on Don't worry now that I have gone I've gone beyond to seek the truth When you know that your time is close at hand Maybe then you'll begin to understand Life down here is just a strange illusion The Music continues its seemingly unstoppable pace, but as the song progresses, you can hear it become more and more uplifting, by the end it wouldn't sound out of place in the middle of a Tchaikovsky symphony carried by violins and cellos rather than electric guitars. By the time the music’s physical march leads the Convict into the courtyard and up the steps to the gallows, he’s no longer afraid, and he’s gone beyond serenity, into the realm of true joy. His voice is raised in ecstasy, as he joyfully begins to sing the only thing on his mind - The Lord’s Prayer: Yeah-yeah-yeah! Hallowed be thy name!! Yeah-yeah-yeah! Hallowed by thy name!! The music takes you through to the end, and you know it’s the end, at least of the story, But by the end of it, you can’t come away feeling like it’s anything but a hymn. One of the best metal songs ever written. Maybe THE best.

I've been to at least a hundred concerts (mostly rock) and I was lucky enough to get to see this band live - in 2016. It was one of THE BEST live performances a person could ask for! I will never forget this show, which is in my top 5 fave concerts. The energy, the crowd interaction, the top notch vocals and the SIKKK instrumentation makes this band THE ONE to emulate. They are almost 50 yrs strong and still going! They are NOT, however, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!! Can u believe that???!!! Judas Priest (my fave band) just got inducted 2 yrs ago and they have been around over 50 yrs. (and are STILL performing live). If u react to Judas Priest, you should do Victim of Changes. Also, you should check out Pantera's "Cemetary Gates". It is one of the greatest metal songs ever! Oh, and Ozzy is from England and AC/DC is from Australia, though Angus and his brother Malcom founded the band and they were born in Scotland. P.S. I got to see Ozzy, Judas Priest and AC/DC twice each! Rock on Black Pegasus!

You are entirely correct, Iron Maiden, together with a few other bands from the UK paved the way for what we today call heavy metal in the late 70s and early 80s. And they're still going strong. They are amazing story tellers and entertainers. If you're going to look into more, I suggest Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, a 13-minute masterpiece. But go through the lyrics ahead of time, just to follow the story 🙂 A lot of Americans haven't even heard most of the European bands despite the music coming from here. The US was behind.

Maiden were one of the "New Wave Of British Heavy Metal" that came soon after bands like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. They set a high bar when it comes to lyrics because Bruce had a classical education. They wrote songs about historical moments such as the European settlement of America with "Run To The Hills", the infamous battle known as "the charge of the light brigade" with the song "The Trooper". Bruce often refers to classical literature in songs like "Rime of the Ancient Mariner". Bruce also has a melt-down if he smells anyone smoking in the audience because it may hurt his voice.

Bruce became theiir singer for their third and biggest album. He is THE singer. He left for a few years in the 90s, and then returned. Their original drummer fell ill in the early 80s and was replaced by Nicko who has been with them since. The guitarists are also original, with some temorary changes over the years. For all intents and purposes this is the OG band since the early 80s. Legends.

Correction: the original drummer was fired as he could not keep up with the heavy touring schedule, due to his heavy drug use, just like the original singer. His illness came on 10 years later. Guitarist Adrian Smith has been with them since their early days but not day one.

“Better” is very subjective. The studio versions are, obviously, more clean cut and polished. The vocals are often easier to understand. But, the playing is still excellent live, and the energy more than compensates, imo, for the less polished sound. They also play at a faster tempo live-that’s not inherently better or worse, just different. I love it, but maybe it’s not for everybody?

However, he'd also like us to bring our fav songs to group, so we could listen, and try an break down the lyrics to see if we could detect what the message was. Very little of '80s metal, or metal in general is ' satanic, most of it was a gimmic to go against the establishment for those that used the imagery. The ' Satanic Panic ' of the '80s was crazy, and why we now have rating labels. Because Tiper Gore an her bunch of busy bodies couldn't get music censored like they wanted due to First Ammendment.

Saw them first at MONSTERS OF ROCK, Donington UK in 1988. They were top of the bill and amazing energy. Guns N Roses were only 5th on the bill at that time. There was also Kiss, David Lee Roth, Megadeth on the same bill.

@@hurricane7479 It was epic. My first proper concert at age 18. 2 people killed in a crush though...a surge for the stage I believe. I remember one of the guys we were on the coach with said "yeah, 2 people died in the crush....they were only able to identify them by their tattoos'. Dark humour but an amazing concert.

@@tunokies That crush was the scariest moment I've ever been involved in at a gig. My girlfriend was just dragged under a load of people and i was just hanging on to the back of her jacket trying to keep her somewhat upright as we struggled to go backwards with thousands of people going forwards. I wasn't at all surprised to hear people had died, I was surprised it was only 2 to be honest. To top it off my mate who was driving fell asleep at the wheel on the way home, careered into the central reservation on the motorway, span all the way back across and rolled it down a ditch. none of us had a scratch on us! One of the craziest days of my life! Apart from that the gig was epic😂

@johnbratmon6385 Жыл бұрын
Yup. They might not have originated the twin/triple guitar format but they perfected it. Iron Maiden have been around since 1975 and blew up in 1980-ish; they were one of the original "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" (or NWOBM as Bruce Dickenson likes to laugh about) bands in the late 70's/early 80's. Of the original members, only Bassist Steve Harris & Guitarist Dave Murray are in the band; after that, it's hard to say who was an "original member" as there were a few quick in-&-out players in the early days. Of the current lineup, drummer Nicko McBrain replaced Clive Burr, who left for musical differences; he died some years back from Parkinson's or ALS (don't remember which). Guitarist Adrian Smith replaced Dennis Stratton, left the band after a few albums & came back. Guitarist Janick Gers came in to replace Adrian Smith, and remained after Adrian Smith returned, giving Maiden a 3-guitar attack. Singer Bruce Dickenson replaced Paul Di'anno & left for a short while after some albums to do a solo career but returned to front the band. So, the classic lineup in the band now has remained for many decades. Steve Harris, the bassist, writes the majority of the songs with assists from the other guys. They've built their following organically (by going out & playing night after night) without the help of radio, much like Metallica did after them. Being a maiden fan is more than just liking/loving their music; it's a tribe, as most in the metal genre appreciate them, if not like them. They have been doing it for 45+ years, are still on tour as we speak (with this same lineup as in the video) and they're the real deal...

My youngest is 17, almost 18, and she’s grown up listening to classic rock and metal because that’s what’s always on the radio in the car. So when bands like Foreigner, Styx, Iron Maiden, REO Speedwagon, etc are on Tour, we try to go see them with her. She’s always blown away by how great these old bands sound live. We tell her over and over that because back in those days they didn’t have the technology they have now to mask some of the bad singing (and instruments too). She’s been to concerts with new bands too. Yep, they have their own jumbo that Bruce pilots. Btw…..I’m 53 and Maiden was my first concert in 1983….yes, I was 12!!! I think during my middle school years I wore a different Maiden tshirt every single day. Yes…..Maiden is the genuine article. There’s a long documentary about them where you can see Bruce in his pilot uniform about to fly the man’s to their next venue. It’s extremely interesting. Bruce will be 66 at the beginning of August and still sounds this good! He’s even releasing solo work right now. I saw Maiden a few years ago and they still sound this good!!!!!!! AC/DC is from Australia.

This is where it’s important to understand we aren’t a democracy no matter how much propaganda we’ve been saturated with! We are a constitutional republic, our fore fathers warned us why we are a republic! “Democracies have failed once the governing power realizes they can vote themselves a higher position!” Where as a republic each person has an equal say! The constitution was created to be a blueprint of our history what works and what didn’t prohibition is a perfect example. Each person is free to do what they want to gain their idea of life liberty and happiness as long as it doesn’t interfere another persons pursuit of the same! An example the electric vehicle. If California and or New York what to go 100% electric by all means they should, but don’t force the rest of the country to fall victim to potential destruction of a non viable idea (today) and another section of the country try another plan, the best plans wins not by force but by increasing alls life liberty and pursuit of happiness

Hey Black Pegasus Raps, I have watched your reaction to this video some 4 or 5 times now and I have thoroughly enjoyed it each and everytime.🤘🤟 The feeling you get listening to Maiden for the first time is an adrenaline rush, its an experience that at first, takes you by surprise leaving you dumbfounded and lost for words whilst also leaving you amazed at there raw musical talent as there music takes your mind, body and soul on a journey you weren't expecting. A journey you will always remember because of the Heart and Soul that exists within the fabric of each song they produce. I turned 15 when this Album came out and your video reminded me of how amazed I felt the first time I listened to "Hallowed be thy name" some 32 years ago now. I would suggest listening to, 22 Acacia Avenue, Aces High, Remember Tomorrow, Revelations, Strange World, Fear of the Dark, Wasted Years, to name a few. Congrats on your journey and well done with your reaction videos "Music makes our World a better Life"
