The 80s were amazing. The 50s would have been amazing as well, but for the innocence of the nation with some pretty decent music, as well.

I know the 1970s were something for another generation I wasn't in. But being born in 1971, the 80s sure were the best: good music, good movies/series (Back to the Future, Top Gun, Miami Vice and so many others). Always looking back at this time - 2020s are a sore!

Throwing out a few retro names of drummer- singers Karen Carpenter, played drums AND sang until Richard forced her out front. ( Carpenters) Mikey Dolenz - The Monkees , took lessons to learn to play drums AFTER he got the role. So, he didnt know that it's very difficult. Ignorance is bliss, yah? Don Henley- the Eagles- no further comment needed😮 Of note- P Collins punctuates his vocals like he is drumming them. Once you detect it, you can't un-hear it. But, that's a GOOD thing, yah? Because he owns that rhythm.

He was originally just the drummer way back when the band Genesis first started out. At that time Peter Gabriel was the lead singer. When Peter left the band to pursue a solo career, the band started auditioning for a new lead singer. In the meantime, the plan was for Phil to temporarily take over the lead singing duties. Turned out they never hired a replacement lead singer, and it was Phil ever since. This particular song came from one of Phil's solo albums.

Not really. Much like dancing and singing, or playing piano or guitar. Simply another motion added to what you are already doing. Playing any instrument while singing is equally challenging. I actually find backup and harmony singing tougher than the lead. Playing stuff off and complimentary to the lead. Interjected part lyrics often instead of the whole logical line. Enjoyable challenge.

Its wild that a lot of people still don't know Phil is a drummer but he honestly is known mostly for his singing to mainstream audiences not deep into the stuff he has been involved with over the years. The big 80's gated snare huge drum room sound? Phil Collins and the boys literally invented it because Peter Gabriel forced him to play without using cymbals of any kind so they had to fill the drum mix with something. Dude pioneered a whole ass decade defining production technique that is still used to this day and one of the core components of the sound of the 1980's

@@marshawargo7238 id read that his first wife was having an affair with a local decorator, and had been overheard in a pub talking to her friends about how this decorator earnt a decent income while Phil Collins and the others in Genesis were doing the pub/club rounds not earning much. And that being the reason he often sat a paint pot on the stage at the start of any concerts, ie just to stick up two fingers at them lol

The night before Super Bowl XL, Bill Cowher turned the lights down low and had the Steelers lie on the floor. I was puzzled at first about your reaction to the headset, cuz I knew Phil Collins first as Genesis' drummer/lead singer. Then as I understood you didn't know what was coming, I was anticipating both his drumming & your reaction. LOL. I'm still grinning over it. Phil Collins was a great performer. I dont want to correct you, that may have happened just after this happened. However, I watched a documentary where Mike and Tony were explaining how Phil started singing. They said they auditioned loads of people. Phil would lead them in, help them out, do a bit of singing to get things going. Mike and Tony said at the end of the day none of the candidates were better than Phil! So I guess they asked him in a round about sort of way :)

In 1964 at the age of 13 he played the Artful Dodger in the first West End production of Oliver (he was not however the first person to have the role, the show opened in 1960).
