Back in the 80's, sitting at a red light with this on the radio. You look around just as the drums hit, half the other drivers play air drums with you.

So true. I'd hear this song starting on the radio, then I'd put all the windows down in my Hearst Oldsmobile and crank my Blaupunkt up to 11. I'd hope I'd get stuck at a light when the drums kicked in just to treat whoever was stuck at the light with me. Good times!!!

It still kills me to see peoples reactions when they first find out Phil was a drummer before he went solo. He was known as THE drummer back in his day.
@deadlyredly13 ай бұрын
He was a singer before he went solo, and a drummer after he went solo. His solo career has no real bearing on his time in Genesis and what he did then :)

We just saw him last year in Louisville Kentucky, the building was packed. He sat in a chair the whole time ( but I just felt BLESSED see to him) he is almost completely deaf ( so unfair) you make some of the most beautiful music ever & then lose your hearing.His son played the drums the whole night ( I didn’t even know he had a son that played or was that young. About 20) SO MUCH RESPECT FOR THIS MAN 👏👏❤️

He was first a percussionist. His drums are like Santana's guitar...unmistakable!
@petervenkman699 ай бұрын
That isn't strictly speaking true. He was in musical theatre as a child. In 1964 at the age of 13 he played the Artful Dodger in the first West End production of Oliver (he was not however the first person to have the role, the show opened in 1960). Phil also appeared in films as well. But you are right that he rose to fame as a drummer in Genesis before becoming known as a vocalist.

This song is played every home football game at my local High School (and other sports). It was played when I was in school and is still being played now. It hasn't lost it's meaning after all these years. It's great going back and hearing this song over the loud speakers on a Friday night. Helps everyone get in the mood for football.

That's why he had a headset on. He was the original drummer for Genesis and not the lead singer until Peter Gabriel left, he's also quite the comedian during his concerts. I was lucky enough to get to see him years ago wonderful.

He was actually the 3rd drummer for Genesis. He joined them for their 3rd album Nursery Cryme.

Hey BP. Amazing that Phil's brain has his body physically playing the rythym section, while he sings the melody. That level of coordination is something special. Just try it on your own.

This song and this performance has got to be one of THE most viewed songs to watch somebody react to, lol. We're all just sitting here waiting... waiting..... waiting..... BAM! Laughing as our hosts are confused to the buildup; lost as to why this song is requested so many times. And we're all grinning...... BAM..... NOW you know why everybody wanted you to watch this one. You've now entered another era of your life. Back when concerts were raw. Just a man, his band, a killer hook and passion. He's got this crowd from the second the song starts, strolling along, taking his time to connect with everyone who's there and then knocking it out of the park. You're welcome

Thank you, man! Epic! The thing with his drumming in this performance - when he got on stage, his drum kit was nowhere to be seen, and the crowd KNOWS that this drop will come, but *where's the drums?* and then he walks up, and this elevator-thingy lifts the drum kit up just before he approaches it, then sits down and... man... EPIC! Thank you!

One thing I always liked about phill Collins was how much he was able to work the crowd without glitch and glamour. Just a little lighting and pure voice. Because the magic of the performance is his music !
