Mid/late '80s, Victoria BC, early evening on a warm summer Thursday: Me and some of the boys headed out to a local meat market / pick up bar that usually had a DJ. (🤭 Hey, I was young, well, late 20s, and there would likely be pretty girls there! 😂). When we arrived, we were perplexed to discover there was a lineup to get in, with posters advertising a live performer (not usual) debuting that night, with praises by the likes of B.B. King and Stevie Ray Vaughan. So, what the hell, we waited in line. Once we got in we sat at a table right by the dance floor, about 15 feet from a two foot raised stage. After ordering our beer, the band came out, obviously guiding a blind guy. My buddies and I kinda looked at each other quizzically. 🤔 They sat him down in a chair onstage, handed him an electric guitar, which he placed on his lap 😯 ... then, when they started to play ... my world changed ... forever. It was Jeff Healey and his band, before their first album came out: I had never heard of him/them before, but he, specifically, had my attention now. He proceeded to play the cleanest, most amazing, unbelievable guitar licks I'd ever heard. He played blues, he played rock, he played country, he even played a bit of what sounded like flamenco. He played Hendrix better than Hendrix, he played with his teeth, he played while literally jumping around blind like a mad man. He seemed to be having a religious experience onstage. Despite it being a dance club, NOBODY danced that night. Every person, patrons and staff alike, stood around, hypnotized, with their mouths agape, staring, hardly believing what they were seeing and hearing. I went back Friday and Saturday, and again three nights the following week, as they were playing a two week gig there. Their first album came out shortly thereafter, and then he was in a movie with Patrick Swayze, and then ... well, I sadly never got to see Jeff Healey perform live again. But I still feel blessed, and I shall never forget how amazing the experience was that first night I saw him play! 😊

Forget about being blind, his unorthodox playing style was just impossible to fathom. His fretting hand thumb did the heavy hitting .... just absolutely bonkers! I was lucky enough to see him with George Thorogood in a smaller venue in the early 1990's. Between the two, and an audience full of leather, it was like being right out of Roadhouse! What a fantastic show. They were great together, but Jeff was fantastic on his own. It seems the greats flames just burn out too soon. As for the music, most of what I heard from him was more blues/rock (Rock was born from the blues, thank you Chuck Berry). RIP Jeff, you were a genuinely nice man and are truly missed.

Very blues flavoued R&B/ rock. The band was also amazing. Just look at that list. This program was amazing and scrumptiously wonderful for bringing the best of the best together. I lost my dad to cancer 2 days after my birthday in 1999 . Think about how bad the record companies that passed on the opportunity to sign Jeff Healy to a record contract . You want to see someone else who's amazing . You need to check out the greatest set of musicians ever , Def Leppard . 7 years after they formed & after replacing a couple of members a few years apart , they released an album in late 1983 early 1984 & it would be their biggest album so far making it all the way to begin the #2 album in the world , right behind Michael Jackson's Thriller . After touring for 9 months promoting the album & right before they went back to England . The youngest member of the band went to a Chevy dealership & bought a Corvette . After getting back to England they immediately started working on their next album . In the 2nd week of December they decided to take a much needed break for the holidays & on December 31st the youngest member of the band & his girlfriend at the time went for a drive in that Corvette . Both of their lives would change forever , more his than hers . He rolled the Corvette that day & now the band had a big decision to make . Do they A: replace him & finish the album & go back out on tour or do they B: walk away from music until he could come back or until he came to the rest of the band & said to replace him because he couldn't do it anymore . Well even though they were the next big thing to Michael Jackson , they made the conscious decision to walk away from music . Now selling millions & millions of records which they've done makes you a great band . But walking away from music when you were the next big thing to Michael Jackson , that's Legendary & that's a leave of Legendary no one else will ever achieve . And after being away from music for almost 3 years in August of 1987 they finally finished & released the album that they were working on & the member that had the near fatal car wreck . Was back with the band & he's still in the band to this day . And the album that they released in August of 87 has done something that no other album in the last 36 years has done . That album is one of the greatest selling albums of all time & from August of 87 - October of 88 . That album had a total of 7 singles on Billboard's top 100 count down & 6 out of those 7 singles were in the top 10 . Back in the day haters would be like "He is ruining music with antics and covering up a lack of technical skill"... Used to see Jeff around the Toronto jamming scene, mostly in jazz clubs. Because of contract rights, he couldn't jam with his guitar so he would play cornet. He was just as good a horn player as he was on guitar.

Getting his first guitar at the age of three, he developed a unique style of playing. Placing the guitar flat on his lap, and playing it like a lap steel with his hands over the fret board, gave him the flexibility of fretting with all five fingers and the power of pulling notes with the strength of his whole hand.

The thing is is that great music is great music. Don’t worry about the offense others take to you not knowing something about something you’re educating yourself on. The lines between genres are drawn by the same mental processes that draw lines between and categorizing everything and everyone. Music and food breaks through those constraints and gives us something beautiful. That’s why I love my job. I’m a year late on this reaction so I don’t know if you’ll see this comment even if it will matter so I just do it anyway. Jeff Healey is one of the best guitarists around. I saw him live once and was blown away! I love blues and rock, all types. Blues is the mama and daddy of rock and country music. They were both born from blues. So you hear a lot of blues undertones in those types of music. I think jazz is in that family too. But that’s why you hear a song and go “is that blues or rock?” And really it’s all blues or you can say it’s both. Yes Jeff Healey is blind. That may be why he plays guitar that way but I have seen other guitarists who play that way beside slide guitar players who are mostly in country music. Only they have a strap on their guitars 🎸

You will hear it in bands like ,The Allman Brothers, ZZTOP, Lynyrd Skynyrd, SRV, CCR, Janis Joplin to name a few ,it also crosses over into country with artists like ,Hank Williams Jr, Charlie Daniel's band,Eagles even the rolling stones dipped into it in their on way. You should watch SRV "life without you " capitol theater NJ 1985 for a remarkable guitar performance unmatched and notice the early guitar swap, tuned new guitar on the fly and broke his tooth playing with his mouth !

I think the tune is a mix of revival rock/jazz and blues. In case no comments yet... the three guys surrounding Jeff Healey are world class musicians who are ALL at the top of their game. R.I.P., Jeff, I read that at 8 months old he was diagnosed with cancer. Doctors had to remove his eyes due to cancer .

this is blues ~ jeff played blues but later on he played old swing jazz & had a big band ~ he also played trumpet with that band ~ he was very knowledgeable about 1920s-30s jazz & had a huge collection of tens of thousands of 78 rpm records from that era ~ ever heard that song by muddy waters > the blues had a baby & they called it rock & roll ~ this is exactly true man ~ rolling stones / led zeppelin / creedence clearwater revival / on & on & on it goes ~
