They still used studio tricks even back then. Sort of effects that make a vocalist sound much better than the actually sound live. This is not live, btw. It is a video of their radio version of the song. I love Boston, but people are making claims that aren't true. (Edit: also I don't mean to take away from Brad Delp at all. He has one of the best voices I have ever heard in my life, and frederickdavidson270 is totally right. It is jaw-droppingly good. He needs no tricks to make him sound better. In a studio environment that's just what happens to make the best sounding version of your song. Vocal doubling, chorus effects, reverb, harmonizing with yourself, etc.)

Guitarist Tom Scholz is a certified genius. Got his degree from MIT, and worked as an engineer at Polaroid before forming the band. He wrote and recorded most of the debut album in his basement. He even invented some recording interfaces for guitar. Brad Delp is definitely a top tier vocalist.
@bgfundy4 ай бұрын
He also built all of his own guitar effects, which is why his distortion sounds were so unique for the time. He invented to power soak (to get distortion/overdrive from an amp while keeping the volume low) and the Rockman series of pedals/outboard gear.

One of the best live bands. But bands had to be great live back then. The live shows were huge. Known as an arena rock band along with bands like Journey, Styx, Foreigner and other...they all had played as well live as they did on albums. This debut album was incredible! Brad Delp hits notes that are head scratching. This album still stands the test of time. The facial hair, clothing and afros may not but the music is what matters.

Tom brought in Brad to do the vocals after he had most of the music recorded. Tom, I don’t believe did the drums, but pretty much everything else. Brad to my knowledge never wrote any of the songs. He did 100% of ALL of the vocals though. All lead, all backing, and all harmonies on every studio album that he was involved in with Boston.

I'm the youngest of three kids, my sisters are 5 and 7 years older than me. They were both at the University of Florida and when I was in eighth grade, I went to Gainesville by bus to see them. By car, back then it would have been maybe 3 1/2 hours, four at the outside. But by bus- I think it was at least 10 hrs. So when I was all confirmed and waiting on the day to come, my sisters sent me a tape. THIS album. The letter said not to listen till I was on the bus (with my walkman, heh), and I did as told. Wow, what an experience. I will never forget it.

Another reason I bring these Bands up is because their songs were making their way into country and Honkey Tonk Bars and I ahould know because my Dad would stop in to have a couple on days we finished a job early or we got rained out of work , giving me a chance to work on my pool game while dropping quarters in the Juke Box and finding my own groove.
