The guitarist next to Bruce is Nils Lofgrin. I saw Springsteen in 1976 in Blacksburg Va. Nils was playing the same night in a bar on Main Street but didn’t start until 10pm. After Springsteen finished we ran across campus (Va Tech) to the bar to catch Nils. Bruce showed up to the show and got on stage with Nils. Not long after that Nils joined the E Street Band. Best concert night of my life.

Sure there is....or was....The sex pistols were just as good....And...they stepped out of their comfort zone of England to tour America in 77. Bruce never did that. Can you imagine being a punk rocker in 1977 and touring Texas??? That makes the Sex Pistols slightly ahead of springsteen in risk taking. Sure its true that Bruce sang about some uncomfortable topics about america....but he was never brought up on treason charges...."or at least Britan was debating about bringing up charges against the Sex Pistols for speaking out against the monarchy"....Bruce spoke out against some American Policies but he had bodyguard protection......John Lydon was stabbed in the leg and had beer bottles thrown at him for his lyrics. And his bandmates were also threatened. Imagine being stabbed for your lyrics.....was Sprinstein ever stabbed?

@@danielbrown3461 Springsteen toured the UK in 1975 and is true to the same values now as he was then. Lydon is a fat sell out advertising crap on TV. The Sex Pistols are an incredibly important band more as a champion of punk than musical ability. PIL were a far better band musically.. Not sure ypu can even compare Springsteen and the Sex Pistols though they are totally different. Like comparing Bach to the Beatles

I get frustrated that most people only know Bruce from Born in the USA! He is the poet of my life...he does rock, country, folk, love songs, angry songs, protest songs...recording since 1973, performing since he was 15 years old, is now 74 and STILL doing 3 hour long concerts! BRUUUCE!!!

Perhaps the best song ever written about being young, looking at the limited options laid out before you, and thinking, "This can't be all there is. There has to be more out there, somewhere". One of the cool things about Springsteen's long career is that you get to see him go from that young man, yearning and wondering about what's to come...to the older man, coming to terms with what he's been through.
@danielbrown3461
@danielbrown3461 4 ай бұрын
Limited options? This can't be all there is? Best song ever written? You apparently have not checked out the sex pistols. Have you ever researched what it was like for the working class in London during 1976 and 1977? John Lydon and band had it far worse than Bruce did during this time. Speak out against the Monarchy? Lydon did just that and he got stabbed with a knife for it and was allmost brought up on Treason Charges. Springsteen could have eaisily survived by working a hugh abount of job opportunities. Lydon and bandmates could not. Or they could have....but with far more difficulty.

@@danielbrown3461 What the hell, dude? No idea where this random hostility is coming from. It's not a zero-sum game; there can be more than one good band in the world. Me expressing admiration for Springsteen doesn't take anything away from the Sex Pistols, or Jay-Z, or Ludwig Von Beethoven, or anyone else. Also, ranking musicians by how badlly they've been physically assaulted is an interesting metric. I guess Marvin Gaye is better than both of them put together, since he got shot in the chest by his own father...

I've been so intertwined with the Bruce since seeing him on his Born to Run concert in 1975. Move ahead to 1998 and I hired Clarence (the Big Man) Clemons' son, Nick to run a group home (Nick's mom was in social services). Move ahead a couple of years later and Nick intruduces me to his Dad. Move ahead again and I was there to support Nick when his Dad died. Nick opened a business, Big Man's Brew and he gave me shares. Nick is also a great musician. This song stirs so many thoughts and emotions in me. But it still holds up. RIP Big Man! I miss you and your Sax.

The Who vs the E-street band? Who had the better drummer and Bass Player? Led Zepplin vs the E street band? Who had the better singer and guitar Player? Don't get me wrong...Bruce was good....but not in the top 10. I've seen him about a dozen times, at least once in every decade since the '70's. 3-4 hours each time with the same energy you just witnessed. I've literally been to hundreds of concerts, and there is no performer who puts on a better show. Bruce personally sits in every section of the arena during sound checks to make sure the sound is as good in the cheap seats (well, the *cheaper* seats), as anywhere else. For a bit of a different vibe, check out The River to see how well he can tell a story.

He is renowned for his lengthy (3+ hours) performances. He always said his live shows are part concert, part revival. This was his breakout album back in the day. His genre is more about working class life and challenges. He has a large acoustic catalog too--those shows tend to be at smaller venues. The sax player (Clarence Clemmons 'the big man') passed some years back. What a collaboration--Bruce always said he was the missing link. 'Born in the USA' is about post Vietnam vet experience. I have been lucky to see him live just a few times over the years--others mark huge number of live shows. Even at his age now--he rocks out and you leave exhausted and happy. People all over the venue are bopping together, regardless of where the seat assignment is. 'Tenth Ave Freeze Out' is another banger live tune.

Top 10???? Lets stick with 27. The Sex Pistols had at least 3 songs better than this....one that allmost brought them up on Treason Charges against the monarchy.....will not mention the other 2 by the pistols that were above born to run. Led Zepplin....3 songs I will not mention that were better than Born to run...They Beastie Boys? They had 2 songs that were better....and yes they played their own instruments. The Beetles? Compared to Born to Run....How about "A Day in the Life? Elanior Rigby? She's Leaving. How about Elvis Pressley in the Ghetto? The Beach Boys have at the bare minimum 3 songs that beat Born to Run.....example....God only knows....which McCartney called one of the graestest of all time. Baba O' Riley by the who.....Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. You really got me by the Kinks....Born to Run....Are you kidding me????? I will give Springsteen #27 because he was a fairly hard worker and not a law breaker. But in the top 10? The Sex Pistols and Ramones were better.

How about the Sex Pistols that spoke out against the Monarchy in their songs and by doing so they were allmost brought up on treason charges? That and their lyrics got them stabbed in the leg by a razor....."John Lydon" and they had to have their own protection to go out in public. No....Springsteen took few risks....Had a few things to bitch about....While the Sex Pistols enraged the Nation....for the most part....and were subjected to physical violence because of it. At least they spoke out against the rampant robbery that the middle class was subjected to. Springsteen never missed a meal....the sex pistols....and other English Bands did.

You had to have been there -- anyone from or near Jersey went to see Bruce whether it was at one of his awesome concerts or performing in the local pubs or at the Jersey shore. He was from Freehold which at one time was a major Jersey manufacturing town whose businesses pretty much shut down and left a city bereft of jobs for the ordinary town folk. Bruce wrote most of his songs about that, writing about what had happened in Freehold to be typical of what was befalling towns all across America. I went to almost every concert, saw him at the Stone Pony in Asbury, around town just hanging out and many times at Madison Square Garden or Central Park. Bruce made a pact with his supporters that he would keep his tickets reasonable which he did for many, many years which is why you see the crowds he got. He is and always will be awesome!. Still love him and his music, and I'm 78.

Darkness On the Edge of Town is my favorite Springsteen album. Thinder Rosd is his best sing. The Rising is a fantastic aklum and American Skin is a powerful song. Springsteen has provided the soundtrack for most of my life.

I remember 16 years old during the Born To Run Tour and seeing 2 of the 5 nights at Winterland in San Francisco. ALSO his 6 night run a few years later. All his shows ran about 3 1/2 hrs . and tix were like 8.50.. THOSE 70's - 80's were the greatest times for music and concerts....

The River is my fave Springsteen song - great story, unbelievable emotion. Tenth Ave. Freezeout sounds like old Motown and is another great listen.

Commando by the Ramones was better. So was a "Day in the Life" by the Beetles. Throw in God only knows by the Beach Boys....Springsteen played it safe and mild. By Marley was better.

Greetings from Germany. Thank's for this reaction. I saw Bruce over 20 times and every show is fantastic. His power and personality is unreachable. Please check out "if i should fall behind" live in Madison Square Garden. It's very emotional.

Bruce still does a 4-hour live show. This is his signature song, from 1975. East Coasters knew him by theb, but this song and album put him on the cover of Time magazine and set his career in motion. It's a 50 year career so quite the rabbit hole. "Thunder Road', "Hungry Heart", "Tunnel of Love", "I'm on Fire", "The Rising", "My City of Ruin".

I like to watch the drummer Max Weinberg, continually staring at Bruce's back. Bruce did a few shows early in his career with James Brown. Since Brown adlibed and moved around the stage unpredictedly, Springsteen had his drummer also never lose sight of him. Nothing like a drummer and the band continuining with the song as Bruce heads off and is interacting with the fans. He played before an estimated crowd of around 400,000 in East Germany a year before the Berlin Wall came down. Kind of Woodstock like, in that about 150,000 bought tickets and then thousands knocked down the fences and joined. He didn't bring down the wall, but many say that rock-n-roll loving crowd put a crack in it.

If you never attended a Bruce concert back in the day, you really missed out. I’ve been to so many I lost count. Never disappointed. He left it all on the stage. His whole band did. The energy in those arenas was insane.

His live shows are worth going to. Even at 75 he puts on a 3 hour concert. I saw him twice this year. One in Phoenix and in San Francisco. I also saw him on his Born in the USA tour in Switzerland. My favorite song of his is Badlands. Please react to that one.
