Every time I hear The Monkees, I'm transported back to being a 12 or 13 year old girl, sitting on the floor in front of the TV, waiting for their show to start. During those 30 minutes, the outside world didn't exist. Nobody could make a sound while I was watching (yes, I was that big a brat and very obsessed). I memorized most of their songs and saved the little bit of money I had to buy a single when I could. I also liked the Beatles just as much at the same time, but the Beatles didn't have a weekly TV show.

The Monkees were modeled after the Beatles, specifically after their personas in the Beatles movie “A Hard Days Night.” The Beatles were a real band, friends from Liverpool. The Monkees were a boy band, cast to appear in the tv show. Davy Jones (the British lead singer in this song) was a stage actor, singer and dancer. He actually appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show the same night the Beatles made their debut, as one of the cast members of “Oliver.” The Monkees’ sound is modeled on the Beatles sound and some of their songs are inspired by similar-sounding Beatles songs. The Monkees were also musicians, though, and fought to be able to play their instruments on recordings.

I got to see Davy in a local venue around a year before he passed...and managed to get a signature for my parents (as they're both big fans and turned me onto the group). Still alive and making music. The TV show was a lot of fun; I remember watching the reruns as a kid in the 80s, first on Saturday mornings, then as a teen when MTV revived them by showing it. The Monkees were always one of those bands, not as good as the Beatles because they were created for the TV series (dubbed the "Fabricated Four"). While Dolenz and Jones didn't have musical chops on instruments, Tork and Nesmith did. They didn't write all of their songs, but they got to a point where they sure as hell could play them. "Daydream Believer" is my favorite Monkees song. My second favorite is an almost country sounding one sung by Michael Nesmith, "What Am I Doin' Hangin' 'Round." They made a big-screen movie in 1968 called 'Head,' which is famous for Jack Nicholson, who co-produced and co-wrote the film. It was purposely made to "kill" the Monkees, but it has since gained a cult status and is kind of weirdly enjoyable. It is very odd, stream-of-consciousness, and different.

Micky did however learn the drums, quite well. He was one of the founding members of The Hollywood Vampires Drinking Club at the Rainbow Bar & Grill in the early '70s with Alice Cooper, Harry Nilsson, Keith Moon and Ringo Starr - John Lennon, Joe Walsh and some notable others joined later. Their antics remain Legendary, such as John and Harry getting kicked out of more than a few famous places after departing The Rainbow in a stupor.

I worked for a custom audio video company in the 1990’s. I worked for several famous people. One day I got a work order for a John Stewart. I arrived at the address and was met at the door by a tall older gentleman. He introduced himself and led me inside. I met his wife, and he started to tell me where to install two Satellite Dish receivers, one in the LR, one in the Master BR. I quickly realized just WHO I was standing next to. THEE John Stewart, original member of the Kingston Trio (Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley)!!! As we walked upstairs, lining the walls of the hallway where numerous GOLD records! I stopped in front of one particular Gold record. “Daydream Believer”. There it was. At that point I fanboyed a bit, and told Mr. Stewart that I grew up watching and listening to The Monkees. I knew all of their hits. Turns out John Stewart wrote many Gold hits, like “Gold” with Stevie Nicks, and “Daydream Believer” was one of them. John chuckled softly and said, “That song bought me a few houses.” Some days just turn out magical. That was one of them for me.

The Monkees were often referred to as the Pre-fab Four (the Beattles were called the Fab Four). The two groups met once in England and the song "Randy Scouse Git" by the Monkees was a result of that meeting. Herman's Hermits were the singers of "Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter." I loved the Monkees back in the day as well as Herman's Hermits. Yes, I'm that old. I'm also a performer and have done songs by both groups for years. The Monkees have a LOT of hits. The only movie made by the Monkees was "Head" and was directed and I think produced by Jack Nicholson, who was a good friend of theirs. The first talent show I ever won was in the 9th grade in Austin, Texas. I won with my band by playing and singing The Monkees song "Mary, Mary," which was my girlfriend's name.

Every Friday night we would go to the ice skating rink and they would play this song for a “couples only” skate. I’d get to hold hands with my boyfriend while we skated around the rink. Everybody loved and still loves The Monkees. They were kinda a guilty pleasure - a GREAT story behind them. There's a movie on Netflix. A "made for TV" band made up of four guys who didn't know each other and weren't expected to ever be a real band, just TV actors. They took their lives in their own hands and BECAME a real band in real life, and bucked the phony TV system back then. Pure, simple sound, and really, Mike Nesmith was one hell of a songwriter and talented guitarist. Davy had a great voice, and the other two stepped up on harmonies, keys and drums. You are thinking of Herman's Hermits. Mrs. Brown You have a Lovely Daughter. The Beatles were much "deeper" and groundbreaking, classic status - but The Monkees always make you feel good.

The one in red singing is Davy Jones. He was a child star on stage & TV in his native England. He came here to be on Broadway in Oliver Twist (he played The Artful Dodger & was on The Ed Sullivan Show doing a bit from Oliver with some of the other cast members on the same episode where the Beatles made their U. S. TV debut). He was 5' 3" and loved horses, he was also a jockey. David Bowie's real name was David Jones, he changed his name because this Davy Jones was already known. Sitting next to him on the piano is Peter Tork. Playing guitar is Michael Nesmith from TX (his mom created Liquid Paper and he helped start MTV, he was an innovator in music videos, but he did not want to run the network). On tambourine is Micky Dolenz (my personal favorite Monkee!) He is from L. A. and was also a child star, like Davy. He had the title role in a TV show called Circus Boy & his dad was also an actor, and his daughter Ami is an actress. The Beatles were such a success with their movies that some Hollywood suits decided to make a TV show using 4 young guys being silly like in the Beatles movies, and these 4 guys won their auditions. At first The Monkees didn't play their own instruments, but they mutinied and got their way to play their own instruments, especially since they got concert gigs. @@fu6817 Michael Nesmith pitched a music video TV show called Pop Clips to network TV execs in 1979. A pilot was made, and one of the Nickelodeon execs liked it and picked it up. They shopped it around and wanted to expand it to an entire channel and approached Nesmith to be the creative director, but he didn't like the people involved, so he sold the idea instead. That was what became MTV.

There is no band greater than The Beatles. Period. There was no sound like theirs before they came on the scene in America in February 1964, 3 months after President Kennedy was killed before our eyes. The whole country, and even the world was in shock and in mourning! Thank God the Beatles scored a hit record and came to America. 70 million plus people watched their debut performance on the Ed Sullivan Show and it inspired literally HUNDREDS of bands which became popular in the 60’s and 70’s and 80’s. Everything changed in music and culture around the world. The Monkees was a group put together strictly to make a tv show. They were created to resemble The Beatles. Two in the band were actors and two were musicians but they could all sing. They became a huge phenomenon with tweens age group. And we all grew up with The Beatles and all these awesome bands, and the Monkees. Their first two albums were produced by other musicians. They had to teach themselves how to play so they could tour. All the rest of their albums were them singing and playing. Crazy, man! The Beatles….all 4 were front men, lead singers. All 4 ended up becoming songwriters. It started out just John and Paul doing the songwriting and they are now considered the most successful songwriting team in music history. No song sounds like the next. They started singing love songs but then switched to other subject matter which made you have to think! And every band had to somehow compete with them for air time on the radio! Most would release a single 45 record with their best song one one side and a throwaway song on side B. Not the Beatles. They would put 2 hits on a single, and so they would have 2 big hits at the same time on the radio. They would release a 45 rpm single every 3 months and an album once or twice a year. We only had them from 1964 to 1970. They had 21 number one hits on the Billboard charts. 36 more made the top 10. 74 more made to the top 40 radio rotation! In February 1964, they had the top 5 spots on the charts in the same week. You should do more Monkees, because they were a good band. The tv show was only on for 2 seasons. But the band kept going! But you should be doing a LOT, LOT more Beatles because they influenced so many great bands and they could write in EVERY genre! They created music genres. Like psychedelic rock, progressive rock, metal rock, punk rock. They also did word art songs. Like a collage of words and sounds. They did children’s songs and lullaby’s. The did experimental musical art before anyone ever did it. They stopped touring in 1966 because fans were screaming so loud they couldn’t hear themselves play. So while other bands would create albums either one or two hits from their single releases and the rest of the songs were just fillers….the Beatles made sure every song on their albums could be hits….and they often were. He was overshadowed by The Beatles, as that was who everyone in the crowd was there too see. That young chap making his TV debut was Davy Jones, later to become lead singer of the Monkees.

Saw them in concert August 1967. So underrated and deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Davy didn't want to sing Daydream Believer, but it ended up being their biggest hit. Fun Fact: The Monkees was a TV show. The 4 actors had little background in music and played a band in the show. At the beginning, but as the show got bigger, The 4 actor's started to play music better and became a true band. Another fun fact: At a party, were members from The Monkees and other bands, including The Beatles, got together with other people in Hollywood. At one point, John Lennon was over heard talking to Peter and Davie Jones, saying that, "The Monkees at the Marks Brothers of The Beatles".

The Monkees were "invented" by a TV studio and so when their show was canceled all of the songs were owned by the studio. It took years before they could go back to performing as the Monkees. Micky Dolenz did a lot of voice over work. I recognized him as the voice of Arthur in The Tick cartoon.

The Beatles & The Animals were basically groups of mates who got together & formed bands, in respectively Liverpool & Newcastle. The Monkees were a purely fictional band, put together by a TV company, through adverts, for a programme series; pretty much the first 'boy band'. Peter Tork [ the blonde ] was an accomplished folk musician, & Mike Nesmith [ with the guitar ] wasn't bad either. Mickey Dolenz [ tambourine ] had a child acting career, as did English Davey Jones, the singer. After being 'put together', they became quite serious about being a proper band of musicians, and it irked them that for their early material, they were given songs to sing straight out of the Brill building, and had to mime & lip synch, while session musicians recorded the tracks. Eventually, they started to break free, but the franchise was running out, & perhaps the TV company didn't like the monster they had created. Mike Nesmith went on to a long & quite successful solo career, & Peter Tork ended up in Laurel Canyon, where the real LA musicians were. Currently, only Mickey Dolenz survives.

I’m 64 and watched the tv show live in 1966. I was lucky enough to know both David - the singer and Peter - the blond. Miss them. They have tons of hits. The guy you’re thinking of is Peter Noone from Herman’s Hermits. David played the Artful Dodger on stage in Oliver and performed with that cast on Ed Sullivan. My favorite Monkees albums are Headquarters and Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones, since they did the music themselves.

Love the Monkees!! I also love the Beatles but for different reasons. They have a long list of bangers and they all sing lead on different songs. The Beatles were known as The Fab Four while The Monkees were derisively known as The Pre-Fab Four because they were brought together for a TV series. The creators were, in fact, inspired by The Beatles movies Help and A Hard Days Night. I loved watching the reruns when I was little. Hell, I still watch them on YT from time to time. Monkees must listen: Last Train to Clarksville, Shades of Gray, Steppin' Stone, Pleasant Valley Sunday, I Wanna Be Free, Words, Mary Mary, and last but not least She. My brother and I loved the Monkees when we were kids. Never missed an episode. One day my dad said "If you like these guys, you'll love the Beatles", which is odd because he didn't like anything that wasn't Johnny Mathis or the Glen Miller Band. But he bought my brother a Beatles album, and changed our lives. By the time I was 7 we were singing three part harmonies with my little sister. But we still loved the Monkees, and when a local station started showing reruns every day at 4 in my teens, we always made sure we were home to watch it, haha!

Davy Jones was my teenage crush! The reason he sounds like Peter Noone from Herman’s Hermits who sang Mrs. Brown is because they are both British. My daughters name is Jean. When she was about 14 we saw the Monkees at Chastain Park in Atlanta. And when they played daydream believer, it was like they were singing to her! And to this day, that is my ringtone for her… In a very loud tone cheer up, sleepy Jane comes blaring on! Thank you for reminding me how much I love this song! By the way, my children made their way to the front of the stadium and got to see them up close. They came back and tried to get me to go up there, and I said I was in love with a very young Davy Jones, and did not want to see the very old Davy Jones up close! L O L you have to check out Pleasant Valley Sunday and their most classic I believe last train to Clarksville which is literally about trying to avoid the draft, but nobody knows that!
