A variation on that is: the difference between a violin and a fiddle is that no one cares if you spill beer on a fiddle.

I was going to say the same thing!

Your reply, what I've always grew up with. But I've read that blue grass players would use much thicker strings, and classical would use thinner ones, technicalities lol! Peace from Northern Michigan

I’m gonna add here for Joe E, and for anyone watching who might not already know : During Johnny’s part of the fiddle playing bet, the lyrics which seem to “not make sense” is actually Johnny calling out the titles of the songs he’s playing: “Fire On the Mountain” “Devil’s in The House of the Rising Sun” “Chicken in the Breadpan” “Granny Does Your Dog Bite” The implication being is that Johnny is playing classic old-time fiddle tunes back to back without taking breaks or messing up - a prodigious feat of skill and stamina !

@sabre1080Ай бұрын
To add to that, the music the devil plays isn't very technical or even hard to play. It's full of fills and very flashy, nowhere near as complex or impressive as Johnny's part.
@katrinaprescott5911Ай бұрын
An important note is the lyrics he used during Johnny's chorus. They are lyrics to traditional songs. The devil had a modern sound and Johnny beat him by going back to the traditional folk songs of his heritage. Your best weapon against temptation is the wisdom you have learned from your elders.

Same instrument. It's a violin in the orchestra. It's a "fiddle" in a country band. Yes, that's Charlie Daniels. RIP. Before this one, Charlie was probably best known for "Long Haired Country Boy". "Uneasy Rider" (coincidentally? there was an iconic movie titled "Easy Rider") is a clever story about culture clash. "Still In Saigon" about coming home. "The Legend Of Wooley Swamp" - be careful. "In America" - don't count us out. Charlie did good stuff.

The musicianship of bands in the 70's was incredible. And such a diversity of styles of music and songs. Creativity extraordinaire! What's interesting to me when watching reactors is how detailed they get in analyzing each song. When it came out and I was in my late teens and 20's we just enjoyed it. I don't remember ever discussing lyrics, though I'm sure we did occasionally.

Had an opportunity to see Daniels perform live in the 90's where he also played this song. His rendition that day Included a number of extra riffs beyond what you'd hear in the normal version, almost as though it were an extended jam session. Let me tell you, I was absolutely blown away by the performance and I still don't think I've seen anything like it ever since. And You guys are totally on point about Charlie's fiddling talents. The things he could do with that instrument were simply unreal. He literally could play the strings in such away that it actually sounded as though the devil were laughing. What a tremendous performer and talent he was. RIP Charlie

C.D.B. has many songs like this that tell seemingly very persinal stories such as "Still in Saigon", "Legend of Wooly Swamp", "Uneasy Rider", and a song that's gonna resonate today just as much as it did when they wrote it "South Is Gonna Do It Again" but for that it's the country as a whole in my opinion. It's understandable why they became so iconic and had continued to tour up until Charlie's passing. R.I.P CD

I never realized that Rappers were such snobs that they NEVER listened to any other kind of music!!! Just kept your minds closed to other genres. Well, I am an older Caucasian lady. Grew up in a row house in an inner city in the Philladephia area. We were bombarded by lots of different types of music like the Beach Boys, Motown with great choreography like the Temptations and James Brown, the British Invasion led by the Beatles, and folk music with Bob Dylan and James Taylor. There was something for everyone but it was acceptable to have favorite songs from all genres. Now that you guys are in your 40's, you have a much better perspective on life and you realize that there is a great big world out there. With your reaction channels you have a perfect opportunity to explore all great music from the past and the present in all different genres. ONE kind of music we didn't hear very much at all, was country, and when I heard it on T.V. or radio, I would change the channel immediately. All that twanging and crying of the steel guitars offended my nervous system!! I ended up going to college in the deep South. Talk about culture shock- like moving to a new country. The music was the hardest thing for me. I ended up staying here and out of my love for the southern friendliness, I have adjusted my tastes somewhat. They are wonderful storytellers and when they put their lyrics to beautiful music, it is some of the prettiest stuff ever produced. So, glad to see you Rappers in awe of Charlie Daniels. I know he would be so happy, if he saw your reaction. Thank you. 🤗🎻🎶

The difference between the violin and fiddle is just the techniques used. Fiddlers are usually taught by old fiddlers who pass along tunes and techniques. I am a violinist who went to a fiddling group to learn fiddlin'. One of the fiddlers watched me and said "You must be paper trained." meaning I came from the world of written music and not by ear tradition, Another little tidbit from the classical world. One of greatest violinist and composer, Paganni who lived in the 16th century was said he sold his soul to the devil just like Jonny. If you talk to any violist they will tell you his violin pieces are so hard that they must have come from the devil because they are torture. (LOL)

A violin and a fiddle are the same four-stringed instrument, generally played with a bow, strummed, or plucked. They are identical in their physical appearance. What distinguishes a violin from a fiddle is the style of music that is played on the instrument; it's all in how you play it.

As a guy who was in college when this came out, Charlie was a session's player before he went solo. Itzhak Perlman (?) Was a famous concert violist who did educational vids about violins and classical music back a while ago. He responded to someone asking him about violin vs fiddle playing. He picked up his concert violin and laid down a bluegrass lick and said this is a violin link. The difference is technique and style of play.
