I love this version. Tiny Judith Durham simply standing there with hands on hips and absolutely NAILING IT. If I'm not mistaken, she was around age 18 at the time of this recording. The guys had to ask permission from her parents to take her to England! They reluctantly agreed. That trip led to their immediate worldwide explosion on the folk-pop scene.

Thank you so much for this, your reaction was great to see. I am a 70-year-old British woman and I grew up with the Seekers. I absolutely love their sound, especially Judith Durham's voice. So sad she is no longer with us. My seven grandchildren all know Seekers songs, because I have played them on my car CD player since they were small. I sang 'Morning Town Ride' every night to my kids when they were little, and they've done the same with their children. Timeless music. Thank you.

The Seekers were an Austalian group who came over to London on a cruise ship originally. They decided to stay intending to be here 6 months maybe. For the next four years or so they dominated the charts here and in Australia with hits like The Carnival Is Over, Morning Town Ride, Georgie Girl, The Island of Dreams and this one. We lost Judith the same week Olivia Newton John passed. Australia lost two of its greatest voices and heaven gained two angels to their choir.

This group was a big deal for a long time. Judith Durham's voice just went from strength to strength as she got older, in my opinion. Interesting to note that she had a chronic lung disease from the age of four - it took her at the age of 79 in 2022. That voice came through badly compromised lungs the whole time. Her whole personal story is full of courage. I'd 100% recommend reacting to the Seekers live "I Am Australian: Special Farewell Performance" from their Golden Jubilee tour in 2013. Note on the side - Judith actually suffered a stroke during that tour, which affected her abillty to read and write music, but recovered.
@thevocalcrone
@thevocalcrone Ай бұрын
gee you had me there for a moment 'she had a chronic lung disease'. the difference is that (according to doctor google) bronchitis is temporary - and the 'chronic lung disease' was that she had bronchitis over the life path.. lots of people live with that. in between bouts its okay BUT yes each bout leads to 'lung damage' its the same with asthma. in fact the singing and breath control would have been really beneficial for her lung expansion. tom Jones also had dodgy lungs - not that anyone would know when they hear him sing.

@@thevocalcrone My understanding was that she had Bronchiecstasis (which is different to Bronchitis - the former a permanent and chronic condition, the latter being a temporary, even if recurring, issue). But I could be all wrong. I never met her personally. And I'm not a doctor. You're right about the potential benefits of singing to build expansion to damaged lungs, though; that much I've experienced myself.

This was considered Folk, and in the mid-60's Folk was marketed as mainstream. You have heard Dusty Springfield, she was in a Folk group with her brother, Tom, who wrote this one for the Seekers. The three guys, Keith Potger on 12-string lead, Bruce Woodley on rhythm, and Athol Guy on double bass, are all still alive in their early to mid-80s. Judith Durham, passed in 2022. In 1964, at Abbey Road Studio, which is where this was filmed, and where the Beatles also recorded, it is likely that they recording on a 2-track tape machine, so, if there was no "reduction", it is likely that there was only percussion overdubbed on track 2. Their other huge US hit was Georgie Girl. My favorite Seekers tune is another Tom Springfield penned song, The Carnival is Over.

This is folk music. They are 60s music. THIS is talent. I also have an Akai reel-to-reel but mine works.

Morning Town Ride is a lovely song for children, The Carnival is Over is just beautiful, but see their reunion singing I am Australian.

Totally agree. Judith Durham's voice soars, particularly in I am Australian. I am not, I'm English but somehow just makes me feel proud for all Australians.
