Beautiful song, and one their best. I remember when it came out around 1964/1965, and how much I enjoyed listening to it on the radio. I think this recording was from around that time. The genre is folk music and the instrument you were referring to is a bass. Traditionally folk music doesn't use drums, electric guitar or electric bass. If you would like to explore more folk music with the same type of sound and feel you mentioned, check out the Peter, Paul, and Mary songs Blowin In The Wind, or Puff The Magic dragon.

Fantastic song and reaction. A similar folk song from that time is "You Were On My Mind" by We Five.

The recording style is very unique in the 60s and 70s, it might be the size of the equipment (causing an echo aspect).

Auto tune was first released to the world in 1997, every song before this year had no auto tune.
