Next should be Do ya wanna Touch. The record label montage is a tribute to the fact that no label wanted to sign her without changing her sound. So what she did was start her own label and distributed her own music. This was her FU to corporate record companies

Joan's song "I Hate Myself For Lovin' You" was reworked into the theme song for Sunday Night Football on NBC. Saw Joan Jett and The Blackhearts twice back in the 80's, once in a small club in Boston from closer than I am to my TV right now, and once when she opened for ZZ Top at the Worcester Centrum from across the arena. She OWNED the room at both shows.

This song defines her. This is the attitude she's had since the days of The Runaways. And she's still got that rebel attitude. She's the epitome of "rock n roll."
@no_onein20245 күн бұрын
After the Runaways broke up in Spring of 1979 Joan Jett met Kenny Laguna, a producer who also became her manager. Together they set out to launch Joan’s solo career but NO ONE wanted Joan Jett. Joan recorded FIVE songs on a demo tape: “I Love Rock n Roll”, “Crimson and Clover”, “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah!), “Bad Reputation” and “You Don’t Own Me”. The demo was sent to *23* major, and minor, record labels. ALL *23* labels rejected her saying, in essence, she wasn’t marketable. Their letters said Joan “should lose the guitar” or “look prettier” and she needed a “song search”. Not giving up, Kenny Laguna took some money he had saved and both Kenny and Joan started their OWN record label, BLACKHEART Records. They recorded their first album titled “Joan Jett” in 1980 and sold their records at shows from the trunk of their car. Eventually they were signed on to Boardwalk Records and they re-released the album as “Bad Reputation”. Joan put an ad saying, “Wanted 3 good men” for a band and the Blackhearts were formed. While still struggling as a woman in hard rock the band recorded the album “I Love Rock n Roll”. The title track went to #1 on the Billboard chart for 8 weeks in a row!!! The next single “Crimson and Clover” went to #5 (a cover song from Tommy James and the Shondells which Kenny Laguna temporarily played keyboards with and he brought the song for Joan to sing). They re-released the songs “Bad Reputation” and “Do You Wanna Touch Me” and they became hits. The video for “Bad Reputation” was a JAB at all 23 record labels that rejected her (note that the 4 songs that were rejected were 4 hits on the Billboard charts). Joan Jett was HUGE and was touring with Queen, the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and other big bands

I remember playing this song so LOUD in my bedroom that you could hear it all over the house. My Dad would get so upset at me and threaten to take my stereo out. But he never did. I wish I hadn't ever done that to him. Miss him so much!

I understand so much what you mean. My dad adopted me at two years old when he married my mom. That means so much to me now at 70 years old. I remember him taking me on a trip to go deer hunting in Pennsylvania when I was a teenager. He let me pick the radio station and we listen to the Beatles Hello Goodbye. He preferred country music but now I see the sacrifice was out of love.like your dad I’m 100% sure he loved you even if he wasn’t digging the music. Honestly I look forward to the day I see him again and I hope you do too.

You didn’t do anything that the rest of us angsty teenagers didn’t do! Cranking our rebellious music was a rite of passage. I’m sure your dad loved you just the same. We love our kids unconditionally, even though the teenage years put us to the test,lol…😅 You’d dad lives in your heart! What was your dad’s favorite music? Play some today as you remember the good times, in his honor!🎼💜

The Runaways was an all-female rock and roll band. The core lineup of the group consisted of: • Joan Jett (rhythm guitarist, vocalist, and co-founder of the band) • Lita Ford (lead guitarist) • Sandy West (drummer and co-founder) • Cherie Currie (lead vocalist) • Jackie Fox (bass guitarist) This lineup represents the most well-known configuration of The Runaways, though the band experienced several membership changes throughout its existence. Joan Jett initially focused on rhythm guitar but later took on lead vocal duties after Cherie Currie’s departure. The band was formed in 1975 in Los Angeles and made significant strides in the male-dominated rock music scene of the 1970s.

You can NEVER get enough Joan Jett!!!! She was, and STILL is awesome! If you're truly interested in the history of punk in America read up on CBGB, a punk club in NYC in the 70s, Pretty much everyone who was anyone in American punk came out of CBGBs. Everyone from the Ramones to Joan Jett's Runaways. Back in those days there were two clubs in NYC everyone went to. Studio 54 for the disco, and CBGBs for the punk. And the stories about both clubs, ESPECIALLY 54, were outrageous and legendary!

The Runaways was the all teenage girl punk/metal influenced hard rock band that Joan Jett co founded. (Lita Ford was the lead guitarist, 2 rock icons came from the band) The Runaways were from August 1975-Spring of 1979. "Cherry Bomb" was the song Joan Jett co wrote w/ their manager for an audition song for Cherie Currie (lead singer) it was a play on her name and the fact they were young teenage firecrackers. Later Joan Jett would sing and perform the song with her band The Blackhearts on 1984's "Glorious Results of a Misspent Youth" album and they still perform it live to this day, a 50 YEAR old song!!!! Let that sink in!!!

Her short song length is a product of two factors: 1. Her punk influences. Punk songs of the time were generally 2 to 2 1/2 minutes in length. 2. Radio airplay. Most radio stations at that time wouldn't play songs that went much over 3 minutes. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen was a very rare exception.
@luckyrobinshomestead4 күн бұрын
The funny thing is that by the time I was listening to Joan Jett and the Blackhearts they were pretty mainstream. I mean, we weren't listening to this song in middle school because they wouldn't play it on the radio because it swore, but there were a lot of their songs that were on the radio. But I Love Rock and Roll was a huge hit. So was I Hate Myself for Loving You. Top 40's, not just punk rock. When you've got it, you've just got it and Joan and her band really did.

Punk Rock was in part a reaction to the excesses of AOR and Corporate Rock, so the music is LOUD, FAST, SHORT. An extreme example is found in the band The Minutemen, who kept all their songs to less than 60 seconds.

Love me some Joan Jett. Flipping then middle finger to the world. She is beautiful. Joan is considered a punk icon. Punk is more about the attitude than a sound but it typically is heavy driving guitars, bass & drums and often speaks to youthful rebellion of establishment ideals. Punk defined that attitude and for a female to be viewed as an icon in the punk movement is nothing short of incredible since it was dominated by men. The Runaways were punk but Joan stripped it all down going solo and her gritty voice fit that rebellious rock nature so well. But punk songs were notoriously short. If they hit 3 minutes that was a long song.
