I remember watching this one video where they explain that the movies are on their own seperate timeline, the movie timeline where instead of fighting the mainline villains, aside from frieza, they fought the movie villains. I thought it was a pretty interesting theory to make the movies somewhat canon in their own right.

literally all they had to do was not add this random scene and it could've been made canon later even if toriyama didn't write it, i get it's cute but since present trunks doesn't use a sword, it's supposed to be future trunks except it outright can't be 💀 shame since this movie has so many good ideas, maybe they'll bring tapion into canon the way they did with broly
