I agree about the price. I have an M600 that I bought from Iguanasell and if memory serves it was about the same price point, perhaps a bit less for a larger pen.

Excellent and insightful review, as always! I love Pelikan pens, and no doubt they are generally superb writers, but personally I never quite saw the visual appeal of the '05' silver trimmed editions. Perhaps apart from the Stresemann editions. Like I think you hint at in concluding remarks, I think the silver trim lacks the premium look of the gold-trimmed '00' pens, which I quite enjoy!

Excellent, as ever, Stephen. Broadly speaking (sic), the later generation of Pelikan nibs are indeed, at variance. I discovered this with an M205 Duo - double broad nib - NOS (because as you know, Pelikan no longer make this nib size); initial usage, I found it to be over-polished, & whilst smooth - it was overly so - hence, I adjusted it for a degree of feedback, thence knowing that I was actually writing with same; no ink flow issue (prior to adjustment), & much improved post-alteration. Of course, much earlier models from this brand have never given me cause for concern - either steel or gold - the writing experience, superlative. Thank you, my friend, for another interesting presentation !! :D

I bought this pen but in the anthracite Stresemann version! Luckily, I had the opportunity to try the nib before I bought it and I got a good one.

The last Pelikan I purchased was the Fahrney's Pelikan M201 Limited Edition Neptune With an italic. I was disappointed I had to tune the nib. The Pelikan before that was a regular m200 with a fine that also needed tuning. I'm comfortable with that but I really should not have to tune a nib at those prices. I don't mean stuff that is personal preference like wetter writing. Skipping should not happen with these pens out of the box.

3 out of the 4 Pelikans I own have had sub-par nibs out of the box. And none of the nibs have been true to size. I love a lot of things about the brand and the pens are near-bulletproof and perfect in terms of design, but I believe that nib QC there has been slipping for some time now. I also know that my experiences are not the norm...the majority of people absolutely gush over Pelikan nibs.

Dear Mr Brown, I asked you once before what is the best paper for a fountain pen. I buy writing blocks , bur most of the paper is like a sponge. I would appreciate your help.

Hey Stephen, i have also a pelikan M400 fine nib which writes very bad. If you send a pen to Mikeatwork.com in usa , do you have to pay customs or any extra costs when the pen is returned after being serviced/customized? ( i am from Belgium)
