There was an article in one of the Philly Sunday papers the morning Pelle died. The article was about how the Flyers had the strongest goalie tandem in the league with Pelle and Bob Froese, aka Frosty.

I am sure a 5’9” goalie who had to play standup in the 1980s with 80s equipment in the era of wide open hockey who still somehow won a Vezina is more skilled than any goalie playing in the league today

I’m only 22, but my dad and his dad were hockey fans since the flyers came into the league. He had many books from that time and I loved reading bernies book when I was younger. Hearing Bernie say “he would’ve been better than me” in that book almost brought me to tears, I can’t imagine how his family felt seeing him reach the top and pass away shortly later. RIP Pelle I know he’s waiting for Bernie up there so they can talk about Carter now

I come from the same neighbourhood as Pelle Lindbergh and also played for the same club as him. I remember the whole school gathered and held some kind of ceremony the day of the accident. Pelle is the reason I became a Flyers fan.Sad we didn't get to see him play more. Vila i frid Pelle

When he said that Pelle by donations had saved two lives "this week" my jaw dropped. Organ donations was not such a big thing back then. Nowadays it's not even a given thing to sign up for. He couldn't even stop make saves even after his own death...

I read the book, "Full Spectrum", great book but the Ashby and the Pelle Lindbergh stories sorry the whole story about what happened with the accident, who knew 1st, people finding out, good, great writing great book. Highly recommend, I can't read it without crying, and I can't barely watch this alone. Up 10 times, I'm on a few minutes in.

The thing is, the Flyers moved on and didn't miss a beat. Bob Froese was 31-10-3 with a .909 SV % winning the WIlliams Jennings Trophy with Darren Jensen a career minor leaguer. Imagine that, Darren Jensen wins the Williams Jennings Trophy and NEVER plays another NHL game again.

The team showed a lot of character and Froese played well finishing 2nd in the Vezina voting that year. I don't know that I would say without a beat though. The Rangers, who finished 32 points back of Philly beat the Flyers in 5 games in the opening round and Froes gave up 6 goals at home in the opener, 5 goals in game 3 and 5 goals at home in the deciding game 5. I don't think the Rangers beat a Lindbergh led Flyers.

If they didn’t do it 34 years ago, why the hell would it make sense now? No one has worn it since however, but that honor should be reserved for long and storied careers. Pelle was the best goalie in the world at the time but his career was way way too short.

The number should to be retired, he was the best goalie in the world at the time and there will never be another Flyer wearing 31. Remember the day he died, was a youngster in New Jersey, very sad news, unbelievable to me that he was gone just like that.

I think the only reason they didn't officially retire his number, with a ceremony, was because of concern that doing so would minimize the seriousness of drunk driving and dishonor the memory of DUI victims. I think the Flyers did it the best way possible - no announcement or ceremony, but effectively retire his number, as no player has worn #31 for the Flyers in the 36 years since Pelle's passing.

Very touching tribute, well done by the Philadelphia Flyers. It’s interesting to contemplate what the sentiments might have been had this tragedy occurred in 2018, given that Lindbergh had a 0.24 blood alcohol level while driving. Not saying it’s right or wrong, but my guess is Lindbergh would have been disparaged rather than admired.

I think the obvious parallel is Jose Fernandez, who was the best pitcher in baseball when he crashed his boat in 2016 with cocaine in his system. Both he and Pelle belong in their respective Halls of Fame despite their deaths by misadventure.

There were negative comments about his driving, yes ... I do not think that the reaction would be much different today. It was seen also as a moment to inform people of the dangers of driving drunk. A tribute like this is about his time as a player and the shock of the sudden loss... I do not think that today it would be considered appropriate to harp on his driving in terms of a tribute like this one.
