The graphite putty needs to be kept in an airtight container (or sealed well in plastic) to keep from drying out. I believe you can add the moisture back in to make it usable again. I think it is best used with a brush. It gets incredibly dark this way.

I use hairspray in my sketchbook to prevent smudging onto the next page.

I use my trusty No. 1098 Koh-I-Noor pencil extender daily for short stubby color pencils that I can no longer purchase in my region. Should get a second one at some point.

Mars Lumigraph carries a 12B. I have some darker, but they are Matte Pencils, so not just graphite.

I saw a Faber Castell 14B on amazon. I'm trying to imagine what that would feel like. Maybe like the really high quality soft pastels that feel like putting frosting onto paper?
