Also how to keep a Ranger 55 operating in the classroom. Fixing a KS? Ain't nobody got time for that.
Hey I wrote a book, a book about zombies. What can I say I love me a good zombie apocalypse story. You can get it on Kindle, check it out? I would love some feedback and maybe if you liked it could you help me out a leave a review? Thanks!

I have the old pinch & pull Boston Champion style pencil sharpener and no telling how old it is but it still works flawlessly. It originally had a desk base, but I drilled out the two rivets holding the base on and enlarged the holes slightly and mounted it to the front of my workbench in the garage on the far end. Keeps my compass pencils and the pencils I use for marking wood on my lathe in tip-top condition.

I'm a custodian, I have to root for the Ranger 55s. I can take the hinged basket off, give the handle half a twist to get shavings out, dump, and put back all one-handed. Those x-actos with the stamped basket are a pain and get crap everywhere. The Rangers used to be Boston, and their gearsets were forged steel. Invincible. I used to re-rivet the fronts then braze the mushroom. If the art teacher has a leather punch, it will tighten the rivet up in a pinch. The other problem is that in the old Boston Rangers, the blades could be honed without throwing the alignment out of wack; when x-acto bought them they put their cheap part-swapper throwaway blades in every model, and massively increased the price on the hinged basket (the constant breaking and disappearance of which is why they're not commonly deployed any more) and the whole buy-it-for-life reason to get Rangers went out the door. That, and teachers keep buying their own electrics instead of making the district but them good ones. In the five classrooms left with manuals, we can throw away eight tin x-actos before we reach cost parity. Also, they want to squeeze every nanosecond out of us so there's just no time to fix the old Rangers. There's only one old Boston Ranger in my office, locked away, yearning for the day it can grace a countertop safely once again. Until then, I'll try to keep up with the twelve brands of electric sharpeners and tinpot x-actos.

They started their existence long ago as Boston branded KS and Ranger 55 sharpeners. Boston got bought by Elmer's then they ended up getting bought by X-Acto. So the design hasn't changed for either in many decades.

Just drill out the rivet, and replace with a small machine screw and nyloc nut?

I am sure that would work and given the cost of these would be a smart choice.

I plan to use a DT466 with a Spicer 5 speed that I have, to power a pencil sharpener. I figured from the start the rpm's I plan to run would burn it up in seconds, but keep an eye out in the future of my Boston KS highly modified sharpener!! Yea I am serious, sad isn't it!!! I found your video to be very informative and I appreciate it!!

Whoa now, only the 5 speed? What is this, a pencil sharpener for peasants?

I have a 350 big cam Cummins with a 10 speed if you don't think the DT466 & 5 speed is adequate for the job. I am sure you have much more experience than I, as I haven't sharpened a pencil with anything other than bench grinder in years.

NelsonStudios Nothing like military hardware and equipment to fire up your pencil sharpener .How's about one of them there military beasts of yours with the power take off hooked up? Certainly the young girls in your history class would appreciate the historical significance and the absolute finesse an army truck would offer a pencil point.

Still rocking my ancient "Draftsman Special" with the clear accumulator that only sharpens the wood...... Good to know how they stand up to marathon usage!

I have an old Standard brass sharpener I got when my Grandfather died. It was the sharpener my Grandmother used for years, maybe decades in her first grade classroom. I wanted to put it up in mine, full circle and all that, but I could never bear to watch the kids wreck it. Then again it is probably build differently than the modern ones and would survive.

Cheap crap everywhere... I ordered some vintage American sharpeners from Japan. Fingers crossed... I would spend any amount just to find a decent sharper. If I only know the what I know now I never would have lost my sharpeners form the 1980's.

I gave my funky electric to my kid. It only sharpened standard sized pencils. Also, I don’t want an electric one grinding down my art pencils so am on the hunt for a mid quality (read $) manual sharpener.
