Hi TJ thanks again for your excellent explanations related to Pencil2D's functionality. Unfotunately as you mention the Vector workflow is still in development. We hope to bring it to speed once the bitmap workflow is mostly finished as one of our core team developers have expressed interest in taking back the reins for this part of the project. With that said after watching the video we noticed a behavior that could be subject to slight missinterpretation from potential users regarding how the palette works in the vector workflow, which we'd like to clear up in advance. When using vectors each "object" you create on the canvas is actually an entity made up of stroke & fill packed all in the same shape. This is similar behavior found in other vector editors like Inkscape. While the Bitmap palette works normally as expected where swatches are unchangeable when using the color box, in vector workflows each swatch is meant to be used for a single object or part of an object, you can think of it as coloring by numbers, except the numbers are hidden and the color swatch will always map back to the shape where it was used. As such you have to establish one color for each part or element (strokes, fills) per object, so you would "choose" the colors ahead of time and apply them with your palette, not with the color inspector. So a character would have a swatch for shoes, light and shadow, shoelaces, socks, pants, shirt, skin, eyes, mouth, hair, and so on. As a simpler example, say you have the Circle, Square and Triangle you drew. You would be encouraged to create a color swatch for each part that composes the circle, another pair for the triangle and third pair for the square elements. It's also important to note that the vector engine uses a feature that is meant to help colorists to change all the specific swatches used across an animation in a single file, for the vector layer. Imagine having a background with multiple different colors, characters with other colors mapped to them, and having to switch a day scene with warm colors to a night scene with cool colors, this feature is meant to make such cases a breeze. Thanks again, and keep up the great work!

@@pencil2d There is a certain glitch that makes pencil lighter (like 1 with half pressure on 10 with normal pressure).
@pencil2d4 жыл бұрын
@@alkaupadhyay7650 Hey, thanks for the comment. What you mention it's not exactly a glitch. It's actually been setup that way since a long time ago. The thing is originally the Pencil / Pencil2D software tools were meant to work sort of like the real ones and each one would have it's own specific function, so the pencil tool was meant for light sketching, the pen tool for lineart, the brush for painting and so on. Pencil2D is slated to replace the whole drawing engine, so the way drawing tools work will change substantially in the near future (we don't know exactly when yet). I'll ask and see if we can repurpose the tool opacity gain a bit for the pencil tool, but since it is a non critical issue i'm not sure if this will be implemented before the drawing engine replacement :-/

@@pencil2d Thanks dude, also the vector thing. Whenever I draw something in vector, it appears, then disappears after I draw another line. I know it is there, I can move it but it is not visible. Drawing works like a trigger for some reason
@pencil2d4 жыл бұрын
@@alkaupadhyay7650 Hey, sorry for the delay, could it be that you're drawing with the pencil tool? If so in the vector layer the Pencil tool is meant to be used to create invisible lines for shading and to create "lineless" colors. To draw normal lines you need to use the pen tool as TJ did, or the brush tool can work too. That said to be fair the vector layer is still a work in progress and it's lacking a lot of features, so it's effectively considered to be broken and we don't recommend using it yet, at least until we fix it.

Vector layer is good for objects that move alot like characters or entities. And Bitmap is good for the background and still objects.

SO it seems there's a preference to how you want to work, depending. Although as of this video airing, it seems bitmap is the best option for now on flexibility, but not selectability. I'm wondering if using both layers in the animation is helpful at times?

You can use it for stick figure fights or activity by individually moving the hands and other body parts. It is kind of impractical if you want to use copy and paste method and then erasing and redrawing it with your desired changes.

I would like to add for the pixelart (bitmap) type, you actually work with layers. So when you work with layers every drawing has it own layer. In that case you can change/adapt/edit each layer to your liking. Therefore you have actually the same ability/tool you have with vector art.

It would be nice to have mini-raster objects within a frame. Like you could add them to a tool bar and slide them around on top of other mini-rasters within a frame. This would help with moving these shapes around as well as coloring them with the bucket. Or having a vector behave like a stamp that you can edit freely as a vector but can use it to imprint itself as a raster on a frame that has been designated by a grouping of sorts. Or maybe I just go to ArcGIS to animate. :P

back in 2009, I used Flash MX, which had a "trace bitmap/convert to vector art" function which I used to convert imported hand-drawn "cels" into vector objects. Is there any function like that in Pencil2D? And great tutorials! I've subbed and spent an hour on your channel already! You have an excellent teaching-method! 👍

If you're using Linux try using Synfig or the new enve2D (for the latter make sure you're using a dedicated graphics card with proprietary drivers though) Both are also available under Windows, but they are still in beta. You can browse for youtube videos to see if they are right for your workflow. If not I recommend trying out Blender, even for 2D motion graphics.
