restoration work done by me, this time it's reassembled from an actual line-in rip, with some elements from my 2018 remake!
---------------------- what? ----------------------
the 2009 september version of witchcraft is nothing like the tune we know from the album. at first glance the only element shared between it and the album version is the arp heard at 1:06 and the song title. while it would make more sense to consider this be a tune different to witchcraft, it has been confirmed by el hornet that this is a tune from 2009 which would eventually develop into the album version of witchcraft
for a long time the only rip we have known about was a camera recording @ webster hall in 2010 april. the tune was played way after it was canned, as the album's development was in its final days at the time. after being confirmed to be a prototype track for immersion, we have found numerous other rips recorded in 2009 including one where the full intro can be heard.
fast forward to 2020, el hornet of pendulum (believe it or not, the same guy as the person who famously called charlie a saucy minx) played the full song during his hornet's nest stream on the 12th of june. he of course chats over most of the tune but leaves more than enough audio for us to work with.

------------- development & comparison ---------------
similarly to the slaughter ID and ransom, this so called witchcraft prototype has elements which were used in the final immersion album tracks. however, this one was torn apart and recycled into several tunes as opposed to most other examples.
tunes which sample the witchy prototype:
-encoder : receives loads of synth bits from the intro
-watercolour : the ripping bass sound in the prototype intro can also be heard in watercolour's intro
-salt in the wounds : prototype intro drums (partially)
-witchcraft : the arp during the silent part
-crush : shares buildup riser sounds and the drumline cymbals
witchcraft prototype may also be using a pitched up distress signal snare but this is only speculation. the low end transient is similar enough for me think that this is worth mentioning
the story continues when in late 2017 when another version of it was found being played by pendulum at the nye of 2009/2010. that iteration still has the fake buildup from the 2009 september prototype but drops straight into a version of the witchcraft buildup synth melody from the final and continues on with a drop from the synth melody of their i'm not alone pendulum remix (which was already scrapped by then), the salt in the wounds drums, followed by a melodic bridge with guitars somewhat resembling the bridge in the final. not much is known about this version besides it confirming the idea that the 2009 september prototype is indeed related to witchcraft.

---------- bye -----------
if you made it down here then you probably expect me to say something clever but i've got nothing else for you besides some personal thoughts. i started doing this pendu research hobby back in 2014 september when rob uploaded his follower demo clip to soundcloud and i first heard of the witchy prototype shortly after. it blew my fucking mind that a tune this good (in addition to ransom) could get chopped off the album like it did.
either way, back then it was uncertain if pendulum would ever return or fade away with time so there was zero guarantee that we'll ever hear more of this tune. and here we are today in 2020. so much content has been uncovered since and there's so much left to work with. i look forward many more years participating in this.
