Catwoman isn't even a villain in this movie at this point. Yet the movie doesn't try and make you side with her like Joker (2019) or many villains these days. It just let's you come to your own conclusion. Batman himself in this universe is ...I don't know. I don't get why people love Keaton batman, we really don't know much about him yet we see him as Wayne all the time. Keaton wasn't the problem tho, the writing was.

I liked how she was somewhat uncomfortable doing some of these bad things. Pfeiffer had a good performance, but the movie’s narrative couldn’t always decide what to do with the characters. I think Batman Returns would’ve benefitted if they had at least one less villain to make the plot run smoother. By far the most interesting scenes in the movie were the scenes between Bruce and Selina, but those moments were too few.

Well she was a woman herself who was driven to becoming Catwoman by being physically abused by men, in fact one that tried to murder her. So she probably felt some kinship with the Ice Princess who was innocent. Not to mention Catwomans first public act was saving a woman from a rape attack.

Also, if Catwoman thought she was completely innocent, why did she even participate in her kidnap and agree to scare her? Catwoman is a hero. As much as I appreciated Michelle Pfeiffer's performances, I do find this storyline didn't make too much sense. Her main storyline to revenge Max is done pretty well, but her motivation to team up with Penguin to go against Batman, well, let's say I'm not convincing enough. Firstly, if she hates Max that much, shouldn't revenge be her main goal of the entire movie? She spends half of the movie to fight Batman and ignores Max, which truly doesn't fit her final actions. Secondly, I understand that she is reborn so she needs to be sure no men in this world can ever bully her. However, Batman is unlikely a direct threat to her. Actually I guess the problem is the chasing scene is not enough. They directly fights each other in the rooftop made me wonder why she suddenly hates Batman and becomes her enermy. If Catwoman tries to get rid of Batman for a while but realizes she has to fight back, then I'm convinced Batman is a threat to her. That makes sense she wants to team up with Penguin. Overall Michelle Pfeiffer is still the best Catwoman but it's just her side storyline doesn't truly make sense to me.

@Scorpio Bradley I know she said the reason is Batman pushed her off the building, but that happens because she chooses to fight Batman first. After her reborn, her ultimate goal is quite unclear. When she should plan on a perfect revenge to Max, she spent half of her time to playaround and doesn't seem to care much about Max until the end. It's very inconsistent to me. In a perfect logic, after she becomes Catwoman, the only good reason to team up with Penguin is because Batman stands in her way to revenge Max, but it seems like the movie shows more about she hates Batman because Batman fights back after she attacks Batman first

Even though I like Returns, stuff like that is what holds it back from being as good as the 89 film. People complain about the 89 film having a simple story but I see that as a benefit. Returns has a lot of characters and storylines to juggle and unfortunately some of them don’t quite work or get short shrift (Batman himself). Someone described this film in a way that’s more interesting to me. They said Returns is more of a character piece rather than a linear story.
