Penguins embarrassed in home opener, look to bounce back against Detroit

The Penguins were absolutely embarrassed in their home opener against the New York Rangers to the tune of a 6-0 loss. Patrick and Hunter let out some of their frustrations about the loss including digging into what a problem the goaltending position has become, how the coach has to make some changes to the system to better suit his personnel, and so much more. Along with venting frustrations, they also discuss how the Rangers are for real and arguably one of the best teams in the NHL. A guy like Jarry should be worried because, unlike years past, there are people behind him ready to take his job. I'm talking about not just Ned, but Blomqvist and Murashov who are both now in North America and of course Blomqvist being his back since Ned is out. If Jarry doesn't improve, he's going to find himself out of a starting job here real quick.

Penguins were still in pre-season mode. Hopefully that was an eye-opener for them. The Oilers and the Leafs also got shut out on opening night. Hopefully it's the exception, not the rule.

agreed, people are so quick on the negative I believe it gets better with all the new faces and the system adaptation for many and opening night Im sure the juices are flowing, preseason doesnt mean 💩so take a breath and move on there is 81 more to play

First, put Bunting in front of the net on the power play or FIRE SULLIVAN! Second, put Bunting on Sid's left wing. The Pens traded 87's left wing Jake Guentzel for left wing Bunting. Bunting can replace Kunitz on Sid's wing. Bunting can replace Hornqvist on the power play. Bunting was not brought to the Pens to make Geno better. Sid 94 points vs Geno 67 points. Make a bona fide top line. Bunting-Crosby-Rust if healthy or Bunting-Crosby-Puljujarvi or Rakell.

I know it's only one game, but the concerning thing is the team looked exactly the same as last season, down to every detail. The odd man rushes they gave up, Jarry letting in bad goals, zero power play goals, zero physicality, rolling over and dying after going down a few goals, Graves being awful, everything was literally exactly the same. Even though it's only one game it's concerning because it appears none of the problems from last season have been rectified.

HOPIUM OVERDOSE ALERT🚨 I’m hoping this team takes the Clemson football approach this year. Lots of parallels in the openers: -Narrative coming in that the head coach with championship experience hasn’t adapted to the times, dooming the team’s outlook -Looks good early in season opener against a championship contender -Falls apart and gets embarrassed as the game goes on and gets blown out -In that game has THE key player (QB/Goalie) play terribly, looking like he hadn’t fixed any of the glaring issues that plagued him the previous year -Team strengths fall apart After that game, their offense exploded and the team and QB have looked their vintage selves. (Massive caveat there’s more than half a season to go)

I'm a jarry fan but it's getting harder to defend him. That being said, the defense did not help him at all. It was a putrid effort all around. Jarry's not shesterkin. Jarry's a league average goaltender. Much better effort against Detroit. Wasnt a perfect game but they won. The defense still gave up to many odd man rushes. Blomqvist bailed them out quite a few times. He played well in his 1st nhl start. I would have liked to see him cross check rasmussen and get him out of his crease on the goal scored against. That will come with experience though. Toronto saturday. Gonna be tough one. Think blomqvist should get the start again. They might as well play him some and see how he looks. I also think he earned the start with his performance last night

If Jarry continues to struggle, do you see Dubas waiving him, to send him down to WBS? Yeah, it'll be a lot to eat his contract, but it won't be too difficult because of the low cost contracts Blomqvist and Murashov are on. You know no one's going to claim him off waivers, with his contract. I don't see anyone trading for Jarry, especially after he was shopped around at the trading deadline last year, and all offseason long.

Anthony Beauvillier, 5 goals playing for 3 teams last year, plus drew O'Connor. When you start with that as your top line wingers.. no wonder we had issues scoring. We have more money on our 4th line then we do on our top line wingers. Thats not a recipe for success

The goalie and then defensive effort lost it for them early but you saw on Thursday, you’re allowed to make timely saves when the rest of the team isn’t playing well. They got that big-time and it allowed them to ease into the game, unlike Wednesday. Granted they didn’t play a contender but still - Hunter

@@LockedOnPenguins I agree, but if the team had given up after the goal on Joel Thursday like they did Wednesday we wouldn't be feeling quite as happy today. Joel also had to be very good to hold Detroit to 3, not gonna be easy to do that every night.

No I definitely get what you’re saying, my point was that it’s easier for them to get back into a game when the goalie is making timely saves. Blomqvist saved their butts in the first 10-15 minutes with some great saves before they got the tying goal and they played 40 strong minutes after that. Heck, Blom didn’t have to do much in the third at all at 5v5, which was awesome

@@LockedOnPenguins game was within one for the first 17 minutes though, lots of time for the penguins to get settled. Just went back and watched that second goal, and the release on it was just so nice. Was Jarry cheating a bit, yes, but hard to know where that puck was going.

No I know, but it does help to settle in when your goalie is helping you out, that’s my main point haha. Second goal on Wednesday was a nice move (MP28 should not have slid there) but that’s still a save you need to make since his five-hole was wide open, but just my opinion though.

Jarry wasn't good but 5 of 7... 4 of the five were recorded as high danger, I'd imagine the offside had it not been called back would have been too. -.35 goals saved above expected, not great, but when a team scores six, not that bad either.

Jarry allowed two goals above expected in the first period before saving 2.3 goals above expected in the second and third periods when the game was already over. Number balanced out because he finally decided to make timely saves after not playing well. Again, the defensive effort was also awful but they needed a timely save or two from him in the first and he didn’t give them one.

To wrap this up though, my point is that for 50 minutes this team let New York get as many high danger chances as they wanted. Should Jarry make more saves, probably, but a tough ask for the first game of the season.

I agree with that 50-minute part for sure. Defensive effort was disgusting all game. I do think Jarry will get a chance to redeem himself on Saturday but if he does struggle again, it could get at least a little interesting IMO
