Why people got blind from boot leg alcohol: The process of making alcohol makes 2 type of alcohol, Ethanol and Methanol. Methanol comes out first out of the still because of its lower boiling point. Any one with a brain dumps the first few jars that come out because methanol causes blindness and those first jars are almost completely methanol.. Methanol remains in very small quantities trough out the rest of the production but the toxic concentration is removed at the start. I dont know about wine and beer but since there is no distillation process for them, it is safe to assume that the concentration of methanol remains low. but with distillation, required to make vodka, an idiot could give people methanol instead of ethanol and that's why bootleg alcohol has a low reputation, specially if the maker is cheap and is basically using all of the alcohol coming out of the still instead of throwing way the start. Fun Fact: Pro distiller use many jars to collect the distillation output, mixing those jars in different ways will change the taste of the production since the concentration of flavours and alcohol varies during the production, but the first few jars(depending of the jar size) are always thrown.

I don't know if someone has answered this but when distilling alcohol there is a thing called the head. Its the first bits of liquid that comes out of the still. Its methanol and other compounds that have a lower boiling point than the the alcohol. These can cause blindness if consumed. Which is why depending batch size you disregard the first 4-8 ozs of liquid that comes out of the still and the people making the fake vodka clearly didn't know this

Actually, it's really easy to mistakenly create alcohol that makes you blind. The thing that makes you drunk in alcohol (basically what the alcohol is) is ethanol. Then there is methanol, a substance commonly used for setting things on fire (that can also make you blind if ingested). And how does methanol get in alcohol? Well there is usually so little it doesn't harm us, the problem is when the alcohol is distilled. The concentration of methanol becomes too high and by drinking that you could go blind or even die. Of course, it could only happen if you make alcohol yourself and don't know what you're doing.
