I feel like selling his cards would not be a fun time for him. For the smaller cards he would have to make them into sets which takes a long time to sort and is very mind numbing. He would have to list the cards on some website, have someone buy the card, and then put the card in an envelope. He will also have to keep track of where he is shipping too so he will need to get different stamps and taxes are different state to state. Selling cards is not some side thing you can do on the side for some extra money you have to commit to them otherwise you will only make a loss. If he decides to sell his more valuable cards (which he wont) he will have a much easier time because he won't have to organize it but he will most likely deal with snobby buyers if the cards lose value later on.

That’s not how it works actually. They do make reprints of cards, however they are different. There can be several hundred editions of just one card. They usually change the design or do something to distinguish its edition though. That’s why first editions are usually the most valuable, along with cards that have very limited production, or cards that are one of a kind. Long story short, reprinting a card of a new edition doesn’t affect the value of the same card from older editions noob.

The reason your yugioh cards went down in value is because they ALL got reprinted in different rarities (including rarity bumps and alternate arts) also besides the value of cards from short printing, the meta game has changed enough so that these cards don’t see as much play as they first did. Why? Because now that everyone has access to those cards at affordable prices, those plays become a lot more predictable and easier to counter, which makes cards like Apollusa fall out of favor. This happens with every 4 core sets in yugioh throughout the year, all of which can expect to get reprinted in the megatins the following year.

From memory, most yugioh cards only hold their value for a few months. Typically the value comes from scarcity & utility in the actual game; when Konami reprints or power-creeps cards, the scarcity & utility drop, & the value plummets. Not sure what cards hold value to "collectors", but _most_ new cards' pricing comes from their in-game value. (And that's ignoring that Konami can _ban_ / limit individual cards every ~3 months; which can take a card that's worth hundreds of dollars & instantly make it valueless)

Interestingly, with Magic it can be the opposite. While the rotatiion of sets makes cards lose value as they cant be used in standard competition, there are competitive "oldies" formats like legacy which can give a new breath of value to cards that leave standard rotation. Also, with Commander being as huge as it is, old cards can vary wildly in value depending if theres some new commander introduced which synergizes with them. If I had to choose a collection to make with reselling in mind (which Charlie already said its not his interest, so whatever), Magic cards would certainly be better for hoarding and selling later than Yu Gi Oh.

I can't speak for "collectors" cards, like Charlie's over $100 red-eyes would have no value competitively, but a very early set red-eyes is apparently worth up to ~200-300 dollars. But for cards that came out in the last few years, they don't usually have "collector" value (10,000 dragon is one exception), so any big price-tag comes from in-game value. Some of the oldest cards in yugioh are worth a lot if they're in good condition, but that just comes down to scarcity, since most of them were destroyed by us as grubby kids, lol. Yugioh technically has 2 formats, "Advanced" and "Traditional", but there is no "rotation" in Yugioh; all cards from any set are legal unless banned / limited (which is about ~200 cards).

Nowadays yugioh is mostly played by adults, who were kids when it released. It doesn't seem to attract kids anymore, probably because it isn't easy to get into, finacially and play wise.

Man I remember being hard in the paint with Yugioh back when i was growing up. Now that I work in a comic book store I know exactly what cards and sets I had prior. I remember having a Kaiba and Yugi Evolution starter decks, a Pegasus starter(my absolute favorite at the time for some reason. I remember I just loved how Relinquished looked..), Dragons Roar and Warriors Triumph structure decks, and I know I had popped open a few or 7 packs from Labyrinth of Nightmare, Enemy of Justice, Cybernetic Revolution and Dark Crisis. Such good times. I still have images of certain cards floating in my head from when I used to play with them. I have a few commons in a baggie from when I was young that I like to recollect on(the ones that survived under my bed essentially. I am not sure where the rest went. I am sure they ended up at the landfill). It is cool seeing this hobby blow up now. I do enjoy chatting with the "new generation" yugioh players at my work. The game has changed incredibly.
