I was in those spheres lot before they were called “sigma” (I’m not anymore) and this is 100% accurate. By and large, they’re guys who were picked on or physically abused/assaulted in middle school/high school who correctly recognized that bad things were done to them, but incorrectly project that on the world being against them instead of bullies being bullies. Because that’s easier than doing the necessary internal work of processing that trauma. It’s why so many of them idolize school shooters like Harris and Klebold; they falsely believe that they “fought back,” when really they attacked everyone. It’s sad really.

Im a girl but I relate to some of their mental health issues. Its too easy to get so isolated you start going stir crazy. If it becomes your lifestyle and you have no friends, you're really vulnerable to toxic thinking. If something happens to you while you're like that, the bad thoughts can stick like flypaper because the chronic pessimism can become a coping mechanism for trauma, because the instinct is if you mistrust everyone then you cant get duped and that mindset starts to bleed into every aspect of your life. This is so eloquently stated. The accuracy of the sequence hits like a freight train. The catharsis of self-hate when you're isolated is dehabilitating. The thought forms that persist when somone manages to impact your routine is so dam destructive, it's not like you needed the help. Im not sure if the pain causes slight tendencies of OCD or the pain is caused by OCD tendencies. Whatever the case, the feelings are truly a drug all on its own. It's a SOB to kick and you'll have to be way past empty and far beyond losing everything before the thought to change will cross your mind. As a weird loner, I think it's okay to just be a weird loner. You don't need to trick yourself into believing that you're actually really cool and scary, and you definitely don't need to prove it to others. What they think about you and your way of life doesn't matter if it's not harmful. What matters is that you're happy living your life the way you are. If you actually want people to like you, but you're socially inept, giving yourself an edgy persona that implies you're better than everyone around you does not do you any favors.

I think this is sound advice for a lot of young introverts too. Many of them, along with their peers, think they need to open up and magically become a social butterfly... When it's okay to be introverted and quiet. You just need to own up to it. We see this a lot in media too where the quiet kid suddenly opens up and becomes social as a means of development. I've only seen a few shows that do the opposite where the extroverted friend(s) learn to respect the introvert's preferences. Like having chill kickbacks with the boys instead of loud house parties. That's how it should go unless the introvert has genuine social issues that need to be worked out. I'd also like to point out that introverted =\= socially inept or awkward. If you are, you should work that out. The internet promotes what I like to call "toxic introversion." It's when introverts act like they're all misunderstood geniuses being held down by Big Extrovert™. Because of that, some of them take a weird sense of pride in being socially inept. As if it makes them better because extroverts are all just brainless party animals who lack the human nuance of introversion. That kind of crap. It's all over the internet.

To me this just sounds like low self esteem. I can relate to this a lot actually, I couldn’t count the amount of times I’ve met someone and immediately seen them as a threat because of my own projecting. I would take little things that they would say and twist them around until I came to the conclusion that they didn’t take me seriously and didn’t like me. When in reality they were being perfectly normal and I was just projecting my own bad feelings towards my self onto them. With this way of thinking I found myself constantly having to deal with, “enemies” and “people who underestimate me” all that shit. When your biggest enemy is your self that’s hard to deal with, so you just see the enemies all around you instead. It’s sad

There's a term for this in Japanese--chuunibyou (literally "8th grader syndrome"). It's their version of being an edgelord or MC syndrome, though it's usually accompanied by pretentious anime fantasy tropes. Charlie had it right, it seems these sigma males are all trying to be mysterious and cool like Batman. It's a very adolescent thing. (The currently airing anime "The Eminence in Shadow" has a really good example of that kind of character. Some of the comments could have been lifted straight from the protagonist's inner thoughts.) Now the thing that sigma males say they want to be--a self-assured person who doesn't care what other people think and can't be easily intimidated and is underestimated--is a worthwhile thing to pursue. But it usually takes life experience and maturity to get to that point, as well as a really strong inner sense of one's values. When you know what you want and what you stand for in life, it's much easier to move through life confidently and without fear of others' approval and judgment. And if you know you are strong, you don't need to be flexing it all the time, but hold it in reserve until it is needed. Insofar as these sigma guys are trying to go in that direction and not towards violence or psychopathy, I'd cut them some slack. Most of them still seem to be figuring it out. It's not supposed to end there though.

Now I'm no psychologist, but I think being a "sigma male" is a coping mechanism for bully or abuse victims who couldn't stand up for themselves most of their life. So, they put on this persona of being a sigma male that's always "two-steps ahead" and this quiet John Wick like character as a way of protecting themselves from what they perceive as future harm. Hence the "everyone's against me" mentality. It could also be some kind of power fantasy for people who feel they have mundane lives and just want an escape from their boring lives and live this epic action movie hero character they mold as a way of escapism. The idea of fixating onto your enemies is well described in -"Doppelganger"-(UPD: it's called "the Double" in english, I got it wrong) by Dostoevsky. The main character is a sigma according to this video. He is very socially awkward and really wants public appreciation, yet does nothing to improve his social skills because he thinks that the reason why he is unpopular is him being good and virtuous and "wearing a mask only at masquerade" (he says that line a lot). So everybody around is just not honest and kind enough to be able to see how good he is and how high his morals are; therefore, whenever he gets in an awkward or uncomfortable situation, he sees them as enemies that constantly are planning against him and trying to mock him or ruin his reputation. Dostoevsky was first-class psychologist and really felt human nature deeply there is much more in a book I highly recommend to read it. I find it funny how accurate some people are depicted in his books even after almost 200 years, it shows that this is nothing new and same archetypes of people are always has been in our societies for millenia probably.

You'd be surprised how common Escapism is our society, everything is so interconnected due to globalization of social media, that people feel the need to stand out. Heck? Who wants to be normal when I could be just like that super, edgy cool character from X or become just like X celebrity? Being normal isn't normal anymore my favourite trend to represent this is the NPC trend where people who act normal or unentertaining aren't considered "real". We all just want to be special (gonna say tho that my use of "all" is vague as obviously not everyone is influenced the same way)

@outofmind9222 There's nothing wrong with having social anxiety. It does become wrong when you weave these stupid stories to yourself to cope. I had bad social anxiety. I couldn't look people in the eye. I have turned to these "sigma" or "outsider men" ideologies once, but eventually I had to become an adult. In order to live a more stress-free life I had to give up caring about how people perceive me. The store clerks and other customer service workers HAVE TO and WILL accommodate my awkwardness. Eventually I learned how to behave properly in social settings. I started working harder, so I didn't need to image people knowing I'm competent at things without me giving these edgy, childish warnings. Hell, even confrontation is something I still need to work on, yet these "sigmas" jerk off over confrontations that they only ever have the balls to have in their heads. Why am I shit talking people who are suffering from this too? Because COPE is the wrong path to go down and it evidently doesn't work. Never has. Never will.

I wonder about various things in life, but the common denominator is always you. I admire and cherish your confidence to mark your own journey in this time of followers and fakers. Reject the status quo. Accept your individuality. Reality is what you make of it until they disagree. Then it is what they want. Bullied boys' power/revenge fantasies. I tried out some of these sorts of narratives in high school. I remember telling a friend that I didn't choose physical violence: instead I'd identify an aspect of my enemy's psychology that was brittle and I'd strike there. Nothing too big, but something that would do a lot of damage over time. My friend listened to all this crap and then said he didn't really understand what I meant, and asked for a specific example. He wasn't even intentionally calling me out, he was just confused about how non-specific I was being. The moment I reviewed to myself the claims I'd made and needed some receipts for, I realised I was completely full of shit. I wish I could say I never did any of that again, but I still do from time to time. Nothing as cringey as that occasion, but I still sometimes realise that I've painted myself into a flattering and untrue corner without realising it. Or just spoken way beyond my actual level of knowledge, experience or certainty. The common denominator in all these experiences is me. Specifically it's me talking to other people. So I find that minimising my interactions with people maximises my truthfulness. It actually provides quite a convincing illusion of virtue and therefore self-improvement, since so many of the ways to fail morally require the participation of other people. It's the moral equivalent of always skipping legs day. I think. I've never tried a legs day.
@Shako_Lamb Жыл бұрын
Your first paragraph is EXACTLY what I was thinking while watching the video. I was a socially awkward kid whose interactions in school were mostly either neutral or negative. I had a lot of revenge fantasies that sound along the lines of the whole "sigma male" thing. They aren't relevant in my adult life anymore, and I can't imagine holding onto them. I've actually had multiple moments when I've thought about someone I didn't get along with as a kid and thought, "maybe it would be nice to get a coffee with them."
