The Herd with Colin Cowherd

The Atlanta Falcons shocked the world and their starting QB Kirk Cousins by drafting Michael Penix Jr. 8th overall. Colin Cowherd says it’s better to be QB-heavy than QB-light, and believes that J.J. McCarthy will be a perfect fit for the Minnesota Vikings, and Drake Maye will struggle with the New England Patriots.

Colin, when the Vikings traded for Dobbs, they did so because, at the time, Hall was the only uninjured QB on the depth chart--Mullens wasn’t available for the Falcons game due to injury. So, they needed to trade for Dobbs to have a backup to what was their third-string QB.

Saying that Penix had to carry "lesser talent" is just objectively wrong. We watched it play out over the last 3 days. Penix's targets: 2 drafted in the top 40, and another in the top 100, plus his BOTH tackles went in rounds 1 and 2 respectively. 10 PLAYERS DRAFTED. Only 3 of those outside of the top 100. JJs top target went round 3... Just a few picks before Penix's WR3 went off the board. (Yes. I know the TE Loveland will be a high pick next year) 11 players from that team drafted. MOST on the defensive side of the ball. Roman, Corum and Zinter were the highest offensive picks besides JJ, all in round 3.

Colin, your logic is a tad thin. Atlanta could use draft assets, or a trade, to move up to draft another QB a year or two from now. Penix is a wasted pick because he won't contribute now. Falcons should've gone defense with that pick this year. The Cousins deal reeks of the mistake made by Denver with Russel Wilson. Another aging QB looking for one last big paycheck -- and a guy who's performance is already tapering off. And what has Cousins accomplished in his career? He's above average (not close to great) and won just ONE playoff game. What is Atlanta thinking?

I love Colin, always a passionate opinion...even when often wrong. First, Penix isn't ANYTHING but a LOTTERY TICKET until he plays in multiple NFL games. So Colin's insurance idea is specious. Second, absent a Cousins injury, Pennix will be 27-28 BEFORE he sees the field....and Pennix has an injury history. Third, the Rogers/Love situation is instructive, but not for the reasons Colin thinks. The Packers kept pissing away SUPER BOWL chances when they had a HOF/MVP type QB. It is criminal Rodgers has only been to one Super Bowl. But, that's what happens when they only use 2 out of 14 first round picks on offense (2 tackles)...and only one pans out (Bulaga). When you have a good-great QB you give him all the weapons and protections you can. Finally, the OWNER is turning 82 this season....does he want some happiness and glory of a Super Bowl before he dies? Or does he just want his team to have a CHANCE to be good when he's dead?

Kirk is probably upset because now there will be calls to replace him with each & every mistake. There are ups & downs of every season, but no matter how the games go week-to-week, nobody is calling for Mahomes, Allen, Jackson, Burrow, etc. to be benched regardless of how they perform. But when you draft a QB in the 1st round to sit on the bench & "learn," all that get thrown out the window. No room for error & cannot risk injury. Surely this will affect how a player reacts in a game & might make them play tense, more gun-shy football.
