The most beautiful thing with this is that it's just the most simple trick out there, but the performance itself is so perfect that it's the best type of misdirection. The saying in magic is, if you don't want someone to notice something, paint it red. And this is one of the best examples of that.

Can you explain how it's done, please?
@JackArcherX3 жыл бұрын
@@JackRascal Basically, it's a double misdirection. They bring attention to Paul so people know he's there early on. When the trick starts, it's deliberately slow paced, so Martin can drag all the attention of the public and Paul can get in position. Then, you can see the switch at 3:17, disguised as passing the hand under his assistant. There's quite a bit more that goes into this trick, but that's the bare bones basic of it

I saw Martin, Paul and Debbie perform this illusion live at The Assembly Hall in Tunbridge Wells when I was about 5 years old and I remember being completely blown away by it and 33 years later it still blows me away.

I absolutely love how Penn & Teller LEAP to their feet at 4:00 when the switch is revealed, with Penn whooping like he's at a sporting event - it doesn't matter if they know how the trick is done as long as it's done well.

It's difficult to overstate just how enormously influential Paul Daniels was to magic over the decades of his life. Can't blame P&T for jumping up - Daniels was a legend.

I love the fact that PJ is actually delighted when he spots Martin, and the response from them both seemed totally genuine. The trick and presentation is very much of its time, but I it's like having an old master pop up and flawlessly rip out an old jazz standard. I really liked it too, Paul Daniels always just got his big illusions done, no excess wafting and wibbling and this was no exception; setup, dahdahdah dahdah, bang, effect, twist, double twist, and done.

Paul Daniels never intended to fool them, just have some fun with them! It was his way of paying tribute and passing on the torch to his colleagues

Of course they know how it's done. But when Penn jumps from his seat like a little boy, that might be worth more than a trophy. As Penn once said, when there is a mask, there will be a switch, but perhaps they did not expect Paul himself

When P&T came over to work for channel 4, they bad mouthed Daniels & he retaliated by saying their act put him to sleep, then they met & Penn explained in the states he bad mouths Copperfield cause he,s the man at the top every ones heard off . Daniels thought for a mo & realised it was an attention grabbing compliment .

Since this video has less then 10 comment. This comment now counts as 500. Even though it's a simple trick. And fairly easy to figure. It's still a classic and well done to the Phantom of the Opera. RIP Paul Daniel's often imitated but never duplicated. You will be missed but never forgotten.

@@JackRascalAt around the 3:20 bit, watch how when the green blanket thing is being lifted, you see the cape thing moving as if Martin is turning around and I believe that’s when the switch happens The green blanket and the black background means that you can switch without it being too noticeable BUT there is still a movement that looks like the cape moving

@@TheSkye077Now you point it out it's incredibly obvious, but I still don't get how Paul left his seat in the audience without being seen?
@TheSkye0774 ай бұрын
@@JackRascal He might not have been seen by the judges, but if the audience saw him moving from his seat they might have assumed he needed the bathroom or that he was going close to the stage to hug his son after the act. There are probably numerous exits and trapdoors, they would have found a way to do it fairly subtly
