ok failing that could you please just tell those moronic NLP/Derren brown worshipers in the comment section that no matter how many times someone pick book or how poorly he mispronounces it. it still doesn't somehow magically influences your brain into thinking of the word brick. i was actually not sure how this trick was done because the dude said you were not an instant stooge, until i read your comment and realized. YOU WERE NOT lol. following instructions based on what you perceive as the trick does not make you a stooge of any kind. this is a lazy mix of dual reality with multiple outs. nice of you not to spill the beans and actually promote the guy.
@justinpees79665 жыл бұрын
kennyvids All the magician did was write down what word for the member audience to think of on a paper while he told the guy to pick a page number in my imaginary book. Now the audience said that he “had a free choice of words” if that is true then it can only suggest that the magician had given him the option of two words: house and brick OR hat/_ _ _ So maybe 4 words

What I don't understand is how are you being guided to the word Brick when there's none of that word was said... And P&T said that they know that, but haven't performed that kind of level of Mentalism... It wasn't even Colin's toughest.
@pauliejay41616 жыл бұрын
3:20 - I think this here is one of the keys to the dynamic of this trick. "You're going to have to imagine this", and Kenny's reaction. He realises that he is being told what to do.
@robertbennett84811 ай бұрын
I expect that he had the words written down, and in his hand, when he asked him to imagine a word. With a promise to pay him, say, a hundred bucks if he plays along.
@DracoHandsome7 жыл бұрын
*THE SECRET* Colin utilizes alternate narratives and improv to perform this trick. There's a constant psychology on stage where an audience member who joins in won't want to ruin the show and will go along with almost anything without questions. When Colin asks Kenny to imagine the title of a book, he shows him a picture of Penn & Teller in his palm - so Kenny thinks he's being asked to name specifically a Penn & Teller book, while the audience thinks he is free to imagine ANY book but "unimaginatively" comes back to Penn & Teller as the subject. Similarly, Colin gives Kenny a "free choice"... among the six or so words shown to him in Colin's palm. To Kenny, this readies a moderately impressive ability to guess which of the words was chosen. But to the rest of the audience, it readies a stellar ability to guess which arbitrary English word was chosen. Each of the words shown to Kenny has a different number of letters - there might be pairs such as "house" with "brick" - and so by asking him how many letters, Colin can pull out a different card. Each card has two words. If the word Kenny guesses is the first one, Colin can stop right there. If not, it must be the second one and he can play off the first wrong guess as a fake reveal and then do the second "real" reveal. So while Colin may or may not have attempted to suggest "brick" to Kenny using "pick" and "book", he could perform the trick successfully regardless of which of the words Kenny picked, and simply choose another prop of his besides the brick in the hat for the ending gag. And, If Kenny had picked one of the other words instead, we would all be focusing on some other thing McLeod said or did that we found relevant to the word chosen. Colin, Kenny, and Penn all agree that Kenny was NOT a stooge, because he was not told to do certain things to make the trick work. However, Penn & Teller easily saw that Colin was obviously palming something, and Teller's gesture is an obvious pantomime of that. Oh, and before any idiots say otherwise... this IS what's on the DVD, so don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining. Go ahead and buy it anyway 'cause it has more tricks than just this one on it.

Alright, I can go with that. My reasons above made me think that Kenny was a stooge (wearing a ball cap indoors, shabbily dressed - I wouldn't think he would be allowed into the auditorium looking like that). However, your explanation is plausible. I would suggest the Penn not pick someone who stands out from the crowd so much. It made me suspicious.

I feel like everyone is being too semantic with the term “instant stooge”. For all practical intents and purposes, Kenny would be a instant stooge in this instance if this trick is indeed performed in the manner described above. He is not being told EXACTLY what to say but he’s being instructed to select from a limited amount of choices while the audience believes he can pick absolutely anything.

He had the two words somehow on his hands? The guy looked like he was literally reading off his hands and so if he had chosen house then he wouldn't have had to unfold the paper a second time. Also, house and brick are related words so he could have made a house joke with the brick in the hat at the end. It's the way Teller tapped his hand and Penn was talking about his "pantomiming the book". I really like Colin Cloud though I've seen some of his deduction work and it's really good!

Not at all how it was done BrotherGreed. I recommend either purchasing Colin's DVD which actually explains this act, or studying up on advanced psychology, specifically the power of suggestion on the human mind when presented with a seemingly "free choice". Having written words in his hand wouldn't work in this routine because Colin does in fact explicitly instruct the participant to "imagine" what was in front of him, not "select".

(note:- magic isn't real) 8: Part of the trick was cut - for timing reasons I presume - but it was pretty good... 9: They cut the part where they put a mic on me (duh!) 10: It was really awkward when Penn asked me about the pantomime as I was rooting for Colin, but also... he's Penn!!!

@dirtdiv3r7 жыл бұрын
BrotherGreed I think that explanation was a bit more elaborate than how he actually did it. 03:54 there is nothing in his left hand after he just mimicked holding a book. He has done similar acts with no props and through the suggestion of words made people say numbers and things by planting the idea in their head. Since he is well studied in this, I imagine he planted the idea in his head, though Penn & Teller thought it was more about the way he used his hands. Maybe in part, but I think it was his word choice. It probably works on people easily manipulated just like hypnosis.
@---cr8nw6 жыл бұрын
It's dual reality. When he held his hands up for the audience to see, they appeared to be empty. When he held his hands around an imaginary book, he flipped over a flesh colored card that had various words on it. The only two words with 5 letters were brick and house. Multiple outs.

Here's what I think his act consist of, Dual Reality and Multiple Outs. First, lets talk about Dual Reality, the audience see's Colin hands gesture as book but however in Kenny's first vision is an empty memoir, Kenny genuine was subtle-suggested and since P&T is right infront of him hence he said P&T memoir. He had a complete free choice. Now for the second, which is the page number, this time round is Absolute Reality, both audience and Kenny saw Colin empty hands gesturing a book, and he had a complete free choice of the page number. Next Colin uses the concept of Dual Reality, and again the audience who sees it as a hand gesturing a book, now Kenny is shown 4 words, HOUSE , BRICK , and 2 other words which are 6 Letters long. Now this is where Multiple Outs Concept Kicks in: Colin has 2 papers, both with 2 words, HOUSE and BRICK in one, And 2 6 Letters words in the other. As for the final gag review, look at the hat and that podium. Every one is focus on the hat but not the podium. You know when magicians bring a podium along in his act, usually it serve a purpose; concealment. I am sure he can fit a mini toy house in that podium and he can do some reveal and punchline. Also the hat could be a gimmick, that can store multiple items. So basically the hat and podium concealed 4 items. HOUSE , BRICK, and 2 other 6 Lettered item. So all he has left was to ask Kenny if his word was longer than 6 or not. If it is longer than 6 , show the 6 letter words and he has 2 chance here. Like wise if the word was shorter than 6 , in this case was house and brick. Show House , and "predict". If wrong, reveal Brick Then proceed to the hat/podium to reveal the final gag. Remember he has a free choice of words, but in the audience reality the free choice means literally 'free choice', while in Kenny reality it means 'free choice out of these 4 words' And no, Dual Reality is not a fancy word for instant stooging. Instant stooging would means Kenny stood to gain something by helping Colin. But this is IMPOSSIBLE because Colin would have to PERFORM AND EXPLAIN this for the producers of Fool Us before performing to P&T. And the producers would not allow it. Many thinks this is Colin's weakest act, in contrast I think it is one of the strongest. The Dual Reality is such a strong effect, both for the audience and Kenny. And the fact that there are so many assumptions to this trick means that it actually is mind-boggling. Although P&T may not have been fooled, we audience are definitely fooled.

Kenny *was* an instant stooge in this trick. In magic an instant stooge is different to a regular stooge. There is no pre-arranged performance or organization with an instant stooge. The magician and the instant stooge don't know each other before the performance. But during the performance, the instant stooge unwittingly ensures that the trick is successful without the audience realising their contrubution. Colin has been somewhat disingenuous in claiming their was no instant stooging in the performance.
@kennyvids Жыл бұрын
I would have been an instant stooge if Colin had somehow given me a message to say, just play along with this, but that's not what happened. Penn also agreed that the trick didn't involve an instant stooge.
@RODGERGRUMMIDGE Жыл бұрын
The audience member agreed that "...his pantomime was so good that it was *helping you* with your imagination..." which is the very definition of instant stooging where the audience member unwittingly helps with the trick without the audience realising. Its still a great effect and a very nice trick. But it does require a compliant audience member who doesn't 'go rogue' to ensure the trick works. If the audience member decided not to follow the 'pantomining" and go rogue, the trick would not have worked.
@kennyvids Жыл бұрын
@RODGERGRUMMIDGE if the audience member (in this case, me) unwittingly helps the trick... that is not instant stooge. A stooge is someone who has agreed in advance to make the trick work. An instant stooge is someone who agrees to make the trick work in the moment. I can honestly say I did not agree to a prescribed outcome either before, or during the trick.
@stephenkholer48735 жыл бұрын
When I see this type of trick, I often wonder how often he fails to get the audience member to imagine the word he wants. I mean, brains are tricky things. Someone with ADHD, for example, who's brain goes at light speed all the time, and has a million thoughts racing, might not be so persuaded to say the word that he wants. I was listening to the whole thing, thought of a title of a book when he asked the guy, imagined the book case, and the word I thought of was toboggan, because it's my wife's favorite word and always makes her laugh.
