We started our diet back in June 2018 with 2 weeks of nothing but plain potatoes, inspired by Penn Jillette's book Presto! During the two weeks of potatoes, we lost 45 pounds combined (25 for Brian & 20 for Jessica). Immediately following those two weeks, we switched to a whole food, plant-based diet. As of June 2019, we are up to 270 pounds lost (153 for Brian & 117 for Jessica). Check out our other videos for more about our weight loss journey, including recipes, reviews, tips & more! John McDougall is an M.D. (internist) who has been recommending a potato diet for exactly the reasons you discovered in your journey! He does say that you can remain healthy eating potatoes for a year....I know that holds no appeal, but you've done no damage to your bodies, only good. Michael Gregor M.D has a site called Nutrition Facts full of great info. Kudos to you both!
@KrocksInTheKitchen5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the info! We have been learning so much. I am actually reading McDougall's Starch Solution now. I have a lot of anxiety, so during the entire two weeks, I was "googling" and as you can imagine, there's a ton of scary (and inaccurate) info out there! I definitely let that get the best of me during our "potato time," but there are so many lessons we've learned along the way. Thanks for writing! - Jessica

Paper Primrose - my Irish ancestors survived on a diet of nearly only potatoes... Turns out that potatoes have vitamin C to avoid deficiency (and scurvy...) at the quantities they ate. I would imagine that an occasional sweet potato would be helpful also from the standpoint of extra vitamins and minerals. Anyway, I doubt very much that a potato mono diet would do any harm to anybody in just two weeks. I actually do like baked potatoes and sweet potatoes plain myself. By the way, when cooked potatoes are chilled, some of the starch (a type of carbohydrate) does change into "resistant starch" and that's why they taste different. Resistant starch "resists" digestion in the stomach and small intestine and so reaches the large intestine intact, where it is a yummy treat for some of our friendly flora and encourages them to make some short-chain fatty acids that are helpful to us in various ways such as nourishing the intestinal cells. Resistant starch seems to help people feel fuller and reduces insulin resistance, reduces spikes in blood sugar. Chilling potatoes, rice, pasta, oats, etc. and then reheating are ways to create more resistant starch.

It’s such a psychological thing. If you were living in Ireland when there was the horrible drought you would’ve been thankful for two weeks of having at least potatoes or if you were a miner stuck underground for 14 days you’d again be thankful for food of any kind. I think you’ve hit on some very important topics and I applaud you for your effort in being healthier day by day with experimenting on what works for you and turning around and helping to share with others!

I know this place is chock full of vegans, but I'd say stick to low fructose plants (and VERY small amounts of fruits, such as blueberries inter-yearly), organic meat, small amounts of WHOLE grains and decent amounts of monounsaturated fat (like EVOO). That's how you get your six pack back. What worked to get them to this weight, won't get them to look like those African tribesmen, with the ripped abs and all that. They don't frikkin' do crunches. They don't lift barbells and dumbells. They just run around in nature, stay active and eat stuff, including meat. That's what 8 million years of evolution has geared us for. That's why we think six pack abs are sexy. They're actually just what we're naturally supposed to look like. If you don't have them, you're doing something wrong.

Have you heard of Spud Fit? He's a guy from Australia that ate a potato mono diet for a YEAR and got so healthy from it! Potatoes are the one food you could indefinitely live on, so it really wasn't the worst thing you could have done (actually it might have been one of the best!). No salt, spices, or any condiments though... that's rough! I think I could do it with healthy spices and condiments! :)
@KrocksInTheKitchen5 жыл бұрын
Yes, what SpudFit did was pretty incredible! We knew going into it that potatoes were perfectly healthy to eat and that we could basically get everything we needed to function. The challenge was more so a mental challenge. Can we eat plain, bland, unappetizing food for 2 weeks? Yes we can. But it really sucks to do so. Even SpudFit said the first two weeks were horrible and he had salt and condiments to put on them. 😀

We are loving the WFPB diet! At first it seemed like it would be super restrictive, but turns out we are enjoying a ton of different things we would never have eaten before! Funny story - I bought Brian a Blues jersey for Christmas back in 2011 during our first year of marriage. Any time I have ever tried to buy clothes for him, it is always too small. No matter what size I get LOL. So the jersey did not fit, but we kept it in that size anyway because we knew Brian needed to lose weight. He has been trying it on periodically throughout our weight loss journey, and a few weeks ago (almost 8 years after getting it), it finally fit him. Maybe he is their good luck charm :D Let's go Blues!

I guess after water fasting makes potatoes delicious I don't have a need for condiments as i cut out all sodium in food a year ago after my first 31 day water fast I still have no taste for it. I get my sodium in the form of sodium bicarbonate and my chloride in the form of potassium chloride. To meet the requirements of sodium chloride while not tarnishing the flavor of food after water fasting the natural flavors of food are too intense a blueberry still locks up my jaw a grape taste like pure sugar
@Livetoeat1715 жыл бұрын
There’s absolutely no reason to not have spices or vegetables cut up and put on the potatoes, other than putting yourself through suffrage. The main reason people can’t stay on the diet for very long is because this becomes gagging and disgusting after a while so if you want to have a diet you can sustain for longer periods of time, add some steamed broccoli, or any vegetable that is not starchy like corn or peas. Then every night you’ll look forward to your potatoes because it’s going to be just a little bit different but with those vegetables you will not gain any weight, Eating as much as you want.

Taste-bud training is pretty interesting. I ate almost 100% microwaved russet potatoes for 2 years (about 10 per day depending on the size and my appetite) to save money. My weight at the time was stable around 170 lbs, and I felt perfectly fine. I find your perspective about your 2 week potato journey really fascinating, because I had kind of the opposite experience. @@davidbown2707 personally i use pink Himalayan coarse sea salt in melted butter with garlic, honey & parsley along with some shredded cheese & bacon bits on my potatoes, which I've ate ALOT of that couple years, along with meats. But if you wanna go all health nut stick with basil, sage & oregano to add some flavor to bland. I went from 322lbs at start of 2019 to 175lbs now (Aug 2020) by replacing sugar with honey & parsley and cutting out nearly all breads (there mostly sugar anyway) its cutting sugars that really made me shed the lbs... @@davidbown2707 salads... leafy stuff like lettuce & whatnot... its mostly water & cellulose which is hard for the body to break down. Cut that from your diet along with sugars & watch the lbs. drop. I have mainly stuck with lima beans, green beans, black-eyed peas & corn (I almost exclusively cook my beans with a spoonful of bacon grease & add the same honey/butter/garlic/parsley mix after draining) along with potatoes & meat (mainly beef & pork) I know it sounds unhealthy, but its has worked and I've dropped just over 150lbs. In a little less that 2 years. The key components being minimal sugars & as much protein as I can fit in a meal. I exercise, but not crazy. And I mainly drink O.J. & water. At the end of the day I'm sold on the key to weight loss being no sugars & no cellulose in your diet.

They will tell you not to do it because they themselves more often than not eat a standard american diet and are not healthy. Very rarely can you talk to a doctor about nutrition! Some points to me that are important to recognize about a mono diet -- part of what you change with a mono diet is the habitual elements of food. "It's 10:30, time for me to get a pastry and cup of coffee". "Noon, time for lunch, whether or not I'm hungry"... etc. If you're hungry, make a potato. Don't stick to meal times. Cutting sugar and processed foods out of your diet for 2 weeks changes your palate, too. The "Corn Effect" I attribute to the natural sugars in corn which can't compete with high fructose corn syrup, Aspartame, Sucralose, etc... (On day 4 now, just had a plate of yukon golds at 10am...)

I love how honest and discouraging you are "if you're going to do what we did...which is incredibly stupid" HAHA! That's me! I've been plant based for about 9 months (this time). I lost 30 pounds but then gained 10 back and I can't get it to start dropping again. I tried Mary's Mini with you guys but there was just too much wiggle room for where I am right now. I mainly need to reset my relationship with my hunger cues. I've become a mindless snacker. I have no idea what being truly hungry feels like right now. I read Penn's book and I got Ray Cronise's book so I'm feeling comfortable in my knowledge of how to do this. Plus, my whole journey started 4 years ago with The Starch Solution so I probably feel a little better about the health aspects of the lowly potato than you could when you started. Anyway, you may not even see this comment but I've stated my commitment on the internet so its official. Thanks for being here.

Many of my friends asked how I can eat vegan style. They said, don’t you miss choosing all the different foods and flavors? I always just say what you kind of said. I eat to live, I don’t live to eat. Thanks for the great reminder!

That's such a dumb question. I'm not even vegetarian or vegan but so many of my recipes are (at least for the base) just because they make the most of flavor.

Don’t mind me I’m just binging your videos, but found it funny that my doctor was the one to actually recommend the potato diet to me! But for 5-10 days and then transition into whole food plant based. It was rough I could only do 5 days and basically hardly ate anything especially for the last 2 days. It’s been two weeks and finding your videos has been very encouraging! I found you while looking for vegan chilli recipes! Lol

Yeah, I was quite proud of this one. I want to try experimenting more with the spice mix and marinade. Maybe using the dry spice mix on some roasted vegetables or using the full marinade on some mushrooms. If you come up with anything like that, let me know. 😀 -Brian

I actually respect the fact that you suggested telling your Doctor. Sure, they’ll likely tell you not to do it (Obviously, in case it came back later that they gave you the 👍🏻 to eat strictly one food for two weeks) but it’s still ultimately up to us. In addition, is it healthy? I am with you...not really “healthy”, per se, since eating only one thing will still lack at least some vitamins and minerals our bodies need, but it’s also not going to kill us, since you’re still getting food. What I love about you two is that you’re honest and candid. And ultimately, eating plain potatoes for two weeks accomplished exactly what you were hoping for...and probably more. You reset your tastebuds, you probably lost some weight, you learned to appreciate real food in its natural state...and you achieved your goal! GOOD FOR YOU!!! Oh, and as you will see, you will not always be met with agreement on everything you do and say. (That’s to be expected.) That being said, the majority of people that follow you, follow you because they are interested in your content and personalities. They will follow your journey and cheer you on...some even following suit. Keep being you. You guys have great authenticity, and I respect that immensely. Trust me (I wrote a successful food blog for six years), bloggers who share real experiences and don’t just fill their site with positive reviews on all the free products they’re receiving, can be hard to come by. You’re doing GREAT!!! 😊

Wow, thank you so much for the feedback and for taking the time to write that. It means a lot to hear those things. We know that not everyone will agree with us (or even like us), but as long as we are keeping it honest and being true to ourselves, I can sleep at night 😊. Much of what we are sharing is just based on our experiences and we have already learned so much from our followers/subscribers sharing their experiences as well! It means a lot to have people like you comment and let us know that you like what we are doing. We are putting a LOT of hard work and hours into this project and it has been a bit overwhelming. Hearing feedback like this gives us hope that we can achieve our goal of inspiring other people who are struggling just like we were only 10 months ago! ❤️

My eating plan is a combination of "A Pound of Cure" and nutritarian. 2 weeks of very strict clean eating (not a mono diet) really worked for me. It was tough, and I had carved withdrawal flu for several days. But after 2 weeks my taste buds and my palate really were so changed. Real, whole foods are a joy to eat.

I just found your channel. I love your honesty, but I don't think it was a stupid way to start losing weight. I think the "reset button" is a critical concept for most people addicted to the SAD. It may have been "torture" but it did exactly what you needed. I have heard about people doing a water fast for that long or longer to reset. I think eating potatoes might be an easier and more accessible way to detox and reset your palate. I am a Nutritarian, as well, and I commend you for finding and sticking to a truly healthful way of life. Congratulations on your weight loss and I look forward to watching more of your videos.

Thanks for commenting. Yeah, we go back and forth on whether the potato thing was a smart idea. It was crazy, but at the same time, it served its purpose and helped get us to the point where we were so extremely invested in making a change that we felt there was no turning back. And we clearly needed that. After years of stalling and saying we'd start "on Monday," "next week," "next month," "January 1st," etc. the two weeks of potatoes was the line in the sand. There is so much we know now that we didn't know before we started and we continue to learn along the way!

You experienced blood sugar crashes which can be avoided by bulk cooking your potatoes and letting them cool and then when you reheat them they have built up a starch resistence and will reduce the sugar crashes
@KrocksInTheKitchen5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for commenting. We actually did that. We batch cooked everything and ate them over the next day or so. We learned really quickly that potatoes that have been cooked and then cooled tasted way better than just cooked potatoes.

So I tried this and I noticed that there was an enormous difference in taste betweenregular potatoes, and the slightly more expensive organic potatoes. I did Yukon gold and I gotta say, the organic Yukon gold potatoes blow the normal ones out of the water. Before this I never thought there really was a difference between the two but yeah, if I didn't eat the organic ones, I wouldn't have been able to last two weeks because the normal ones just taste horrendous in comparison.

Great couple; great content. Want to just wiggle in a note that not everybody will have an energy crash and need a feeding every 3 hours -- but I agree -- some do and this makes sense. And I might point out -- there could be a few people who could fare a little worse -- maybe finding it tough not to eat even more often on the potato diet. You're going to be exploring You, and getting in touch with you. Have a great adventure!

I feel like the 2 week potato hack/diet is great not only because you lose a significant amount of weight during that time, but it helps train your brain to stick to a diet. As someone who has struggled with continuous weight gain & weight loss my whole life, sticking to a diet is the hardest part for me (much harder than actually starting). By first setting a short term goal, i.e. the two weeks of just potatoes, it’s easier to stick to rather than having the thought in your mind that it’ll take forever to reach your final goal-weight and as a result eventually reverting back to a poor diet, especially when the scale doesn’t show what you had expected or wanted to see. Short term goals have always been much easier for me to accomplish rather than one that takes months and months. The diet helps set you up for success since it gets you into the habit of avoiding junk food and excess calories, resets your palette (by sticking to one generic, “boring” food), restricts portion size and how much you eat on a daily basis (since you generally don’t feel the desire to eat any more potatoes than you have to), and enforces discipline when choosing what to eat for each meal. Like you guys and Penn mentioned, the first different food you eat (corn in this case) after the two weeks is so flavorful and delicious that it makes transitioning to a long term diet full of healthy foods so much more easy and helps get rid of cravings for sugar and processed foods. You guys have accomplished so much and it’s amazing to see your progress, great work and keep it up!

While listening to you both talk about how difficult it was I am kind of hmmm. Sounds like day 26 of my 31 day water fast these potatoes are freaking delicious. probably because I completed a 31-day water fast to jumpstart my weight loss and once I got done with that I did another 22 days water fasting kind of got fasting fatigues, which is why I am completing this potato fast I'm on day 3 it's such a breeze, I guess potatoes are my step up from water fasting and dry fasting. it's so amazing nothing probably because I've water fasted before this seems like heaven. The best cucumbers I've tasted was after my water fast, they tasted as sweet as I remembered watermelon. I do supplement with magnesium taurine 3xs a day, b complex, potassium chloride, and magnesium glycinate, which gives me full energy. Thank you guys for sharing and I appreciate your honesty keep up the good work I'm so far down a hundred pounds more to go.

Thank you for sharing this one! Interesting perspective about seeking out the perfect most amazing meal every time you used to eat. I suspect people have been conditioned to do this over decades, and so drastic reconditioning like you did seems quite extreme but may be the only way to cleanse your palates. Good for both of you for breaking the cycle! Stay strong! Some day one of your kids will come home from school and complain about how hard their day was. You'll just look back at them and say "YOUR MOTHER AND I ATE POTATOES FOR TWO WEEKS."

I've read/heard from a few sources about the starch in potatoes changing when cooked and cooled. This might be why you consider them "way better" after they've been cooked and refrigerated. I'm sure if you did a google search you could find more information on this if you're interested. (Everyone has their own criteria for credible sources.) I didn't realize that Penn Jillette and Kevin Smith had done a version of the potato diet. I like to watch High Carb Hannah and I know she's done a version of the potato diet/cleanse however you want to phrase it. Thank you for sharing your experiences with it.
@KrocksInTheKitchen5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and sharing that! We have heard that before as well. There is some scientific reason :) Brian loves to research that stuff, so I just ask him to explain it to me LOL. Penn Jillette's book is a great read - although it is full of bad words, etc. just to warn you! But it is interesting to read from the perspective of someone who ISN'T a nutrition expert, but simply one of "us" down here trying to lose the weight. Just reading his story helped us so much, and he was able to put things into a perspective we connected with. Then after that, we started reading the works of nutrition experts and doctors to make sure we were being healthy with our new lifestyle!

Krocks In The Kitchen -- Does it make the potatoes lower glycemic to cook and then refigerate and reheat?
@keepdancingmaria5 жыл бұрын
A tip for all who want to try this... Raw potatoes and cold potatoes are resistant starches. They aren't digested and absorbed in the small intestine but make it all the way into the large intestine, feeding the bacteria there. Resistant starches are linked to prevention of colon cancer. So once a day, eat a raw or cooled potato. The rest of your potatoes can be hot. Legumes are also resistant starches. They feed different bacteria than the cold/raw potatoes do, but still in the colon. I wouldn't want an only potato diet. But I think I could do well on a potato/legume diet.... Water fasting right now, but hmmm...

this is really a good example, i'm going to try 'just potatoes' with my husband, sounds like fun. i'm already cooking potatoes, i have a sixteen-quart pot that i fill with red potatoes to steam with hot pepper flakes, no salt seasoning, garlic, onion, curry powder, smoked paprika or whatever else i want to put on them; and then after they cool, i put them in zip bags and into the fridge for snacks. i will bake my sweet potatoes though. i ferment my own pickles (low sodium) that i pour on my potatoes and i use other things for flavor. but i need to try this so it's easier to cut out the salt for my husband who has hypertension.

I just finished my two weeks of potatoes!! It was hard. You realise that sugar is an addiction, like caffeine. The two worst days I had in this time were the third day of the first week and the first day of the second week. Both times I was just overwhelmed with thoughts of "Why bother!?!" And when you let yourself think that then that's when the sugar cravings really come on full force. I made a pot of Brian's bean chilli the other day and froze meal-sized portions. I look forward to digging into that for dinner tonight. :-D

Now 2 years since i did the 10 day- potato challenge.( this one is much more difficult than episode 1). I used Dr. Mcdougals 10 day starch diet. I understand that potatoes are very healthy, only thing they lack was vitamin A, and is rich in all minerals. The protein may be lower than somes need... the 1st challenge, i finished it day 6, still lost 10 #'s by the 10th day anyway. I used, butter, salt, ketchup , mashed baked, fried, got tired of them, but was ok with taste. After - i expanded to all my normal foods, ( i did not have the amount to lose as you did), and I still ate small amounts chicken, tuna, ground with beef every couple of weeks... ate other things. Loss now maintained 2 years. Ready to lose another 10 , yet not looking forward to days of it. even loving potatoes. I hear your story, will look at your newer approach. 3 videos and haven't found your program.

I too was wondering. Various aspects were discussed but this in a way is the bottom line point. After a few minutes I started skipping parts of the video, never did find out if weight was lost. The behavioural, emotional, social and other aspects discussed are of course important but whether weight was lost and how much should probably have been stated upfront. Thanks for the video and good wishes.
