Got my dad’s Long Beach 65 and decided to bring it back to life. Appreciate the detail in these videos to help that along. It was missing the spring for the anti-reverse, and I had a laugh picturing dad cursing that lost spring last time he had it open. Ordered the spring, new posts, and some new drag washers and it’s ready to fish again. Once I get a rod and some line on it, going to use it inshore bridge fishing and from some of the piers here in South Florida.

You can find a good new or used saltwater reel for $20-30. Don't get caught up in the # of ball bearings or manufacturer name. Your reel should have a minimum of 3 ball bearings and be a 50 size or larger. When shopping on Ebay, don't rush to purchase. If an item comes up in your search. Take the brand name and model number and insert that into the EBAY search box to see what the other vendors are selling the item for. Also do an online search. You can usually find more info on the reel and see what the retailers and speciality stores are selling it for and then make an informed decision. I have enjoyed fishing for a long time. I'm sure you will too once you get the line back in the water. Good luck - Dennis

Hey Dennis, I was given my grandfather's Penn 65 a few years back and yesterday landed a 47" red drum. The drag maxed down didn't pull any line, just towed the boat. But late in the fight it got to the point where if there was any tension on the line, the handle would crank but the spool wouldn't turn. I had to start pulling the line to get slack for the spool. What adjustment needs to be made to correct this? It felt like the gears wouldn't engage with resistance?

Getting some mixed responses from different people. Would you recommend a 3in1 oil for reel bearing lubrication? People say that it gums up when it comes in contact with dirt and dust ultimately seizing everything.
@2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
I generally use a fishing reel grease on the internal Penn bearings. Oils work good - I prefer fishing reel oils to generic household ones like 3 and 1. Oils do evaporate faster than grease so there is some merit to the gums up argument. I recommend annual service on your fishing reel and if you do that, you should not have a problem with either approach - Dennis

Legerage. Get a bigger wrench or put a pipe on the end of the wrench you have to extend the handle or use a long pliers. You will not break anything that is not already broken. If you do break a screw inside the gear sleeve, the parts are available and inexpensive. Dennis

GREAT video! Easy to follow and very detailed. Just finished my Long Beach 60 which had almost no corrosion, only gummed up old grease which I cleaned out. After rebuild it still doesn't spin as freely as the one in the video. Seemed like it was too tight so I loosened all out plate screws by 1/10-1/8 of a turn. That helped a bit, but still not spinning the way it should. Any idea?
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
Have you tried loosing the spool adjuster bearing on the non gear side? There should be play in the spool when you move it left and right. This usually gets tighter when you add grease to the bearing and it needs to be reset. Watch this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5SZfJpslpd2a80 to see the proper setting and let me know how it goes. do not leave the side plate screws loose. @2ndChanceTackle3 жыл бұрын
Abel - if you are asking about the Long Beach reel, you can grease those drag washers. Generally, the fabric or leather washers, like those in the Long Beach reels can and should be greased. If the washers are felt washers, they should be oiled. If they are hard washers, like teflon/plastic washers, they do not get anything and finally if they are Carbontex then you have the option of light grease or leaving them dry. Thanks for asking - Dennis

I recently aquired a few penn reels from an old timer who i was told was once pretty well known for striper fishing up north. Most of the reels were kept in great condition and look/work perfect. A few of the smaller reels have a spring or something on the free-spool lever that keeps it from engaging the free spool. To cast i habe to use both hands to hold back the lever. My guess is that the smaller reels were probably modded for casting jigs or plugs from a pier when you have to cast in queue with other fishermen. Idk. Have you ever seen or heard of someone modding a reel to work like this? Thanks
@2ndChanceTackle5 жыл бұрын
There is an internal eccentric spring that enables the reel to go into free spool. It may be broken and that could be the reason why you are having the trouble you are. Get the reel schematic and take the side plate off. You should eb able to see if the spring is broken or missing once the plate is off. If it is, you will need to replace it in order to get the reel to work correctly - Dennis

Hi - thank you for these videos - I'm reconditioning two old reels - one is the Penn, Model 85. When I opened it - the dog spring was missing - however it looks like it took some kind of flat spring - there is a small post adjacent to the hole where the dog sits on the threaded post. Do you know where I could get that part - or some kind of work-around for replacing it? I appreciate your willingness to share your expertise and experience.
@2ndChanceTackle6 жыл бұрын
Carl - you can order the part at Mysticparts.com, which is the old Pennparts.com site. The parts will be about a dollar and the shipping will be about $6. If you have the reel apart, I suggest you order the drag washers as well. They are about $1 each and will help moderate the shipping expense. I have posted a video on how to set the flat spring on the anti reverse. You are correct, the flat spring sits on top of the dog, wraps under the post and makes a 90 degree up turn to set on the lip of the side plate. If you need the view, I will follow this response with the link to my KZbin video - Dennis

Hey Dennis, bought a Long Beach 60 to rebuild. Put new drags in it and it spins beautifully now after quite a bit of work. I normally don't care about the aesthetics but this one has cross posts that have pretty much no chrome left, down to what looks like brass. Cant seem to find many for sale and they're like $25 which seems a bit crazy. Any ideas? Do they match up with other reels?
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
That's a tough one. These are old reels and chrome loss is normal. You can either find a donor reel that has better chrome or maybe take the parts to a motorcycle shop to gt the originals rechromed. The Long Beach 60 shares the posts with the DelMar 285. Every now and then you can get a deal on the posts on EBAY from someone who is parting out the reel - Dennis

The 501 Jigmaster is a narrow spool version of the popular 500. IT was a hybrid using a lot of different parts.
