Great Video! Thanks again for your excellent instruction. I purchased the 706 Z, which was brought back into production for a short period by Penn in Philly, Pa. The only real difference between the 704Z and the 706Z is the bail less rotor. Another difference between the "Re-introduced" 706Z/704Z and the original was the addition of another bearing on the handle side. Most people think these reels are outdated because there are NO instant anti-reverse and 15-ball bearings. However, these reels are built like tanks.

I just bought a mint condition Penn 704 greenie. I took it apart to degrease all the old grease. Then I reinstalled new grease and put it back together. I noticed that the rotor brake seems a little bit worn. I guess from sitting in the box all those years. But I heard that the 704 can be used just as well without a rubber rotor brake. Should I just throw out the rotor brake and use it without it?

Thanks for checking out the video. Congrats on the purchase! I wouldn't. Their rotors and the flips, specifically, were finicky (think hair trigger)..... you probably need that rotor brake. Check my community page for help with parts. Spread the word about the channel.

My 704Z reels all have a different drag knob on them than this reel. I’m in the middle of restoring an early version of the 704Z with a black spool and the Planck hard plastic torpedo handle. I could not get the screw out of the bumper side of the bail. The reel is so old I did not want to chance butterflying the screw or breaking the rotor. The bail works fine though it is slightly bent. I could not take the handle apart. I had to find a NOS side plate with medallion as well as a bail bumper and cup. I used fine steel wool on the surface of the mail gear and on the oscillation arm as both had hardened grease on them. I may have to find a used housing as one of the side plate screw holes has evidently been damaged. I’ve collected 7 of the black/gold Penn Z reels as part of my 320 vintage spinning reel collection. I’ve had my 706Z since the 1970s. You did a great job on this video! - Chris

Thanks for checking out the video and compliment, Chris! Impressive collection! Regarding your project, the drag knobs should be interchangeable..... Getting the screw out of the bail is fairly straightforward..... use a torch and some oil like CorrosionX to gently heat the area... it'll come out after enough treatment cycles (you'll need to replace the bumper, but you probably already need to do that anyhow). If you don't want to do that, you can try removing just the trip lock side and reshaping the bail wire that way... same process for the handle, but that may be a more difficult and needless process... just realized you did say that you did need to replace the bumper :-|.... finding a new or replacement housing is probably best, as retapping screw holes is not easy. You can try mysticparts for any pieces you may be needing. Hope this helps. Enjoy the reel! Barry

Greetings to you and what you are presenting.. Why did Benn abandon its usual design in order to design this machine that resembles the German DamQuiq, and what is the strength of this design in the gears?

Thanks for checking out the video, George. Abandon what usual design? I don't like a worm gear system in a spinner, per se.
