Ha! Had to come look at this video again. This reel belongs to a friend of mine. I told him to try your service cause he was going all the way down to ocean county to get his reels done and he lives pretty close to you. He told me he got a wind knot on a dark night never realizing the braid wrapped around the spool shaft.

The way you diagnose the reels is like CSI Saltwater staring Dennis. That braid is nasty stuff in tight places. I love when it’s something that obvious and simple. I primarily stick to Penn Senators and SS series Spinfisher reels. You have saved me countless dollars my friend and I get the satisfaction of doing it myself.

Hi Dennis. Still following to every video and always learn something new. Two things I learned from this video: 1. Always wipe your reel down with a warm damp cloth and take the spool off to wipe it down and check for any line caught underneath. My Penn Spinfisher had some salt remnants left behind from the previous fishing trip I guess and it was rubbing against the rotor just enough to create a scraping sound. Lesson learned.

Dr. Dennis at work diagnosing the illness! I don’t like these reels because of the lack of an AR override. I just worked on an Abu Cardinal C177 reel that had an oscillation block with that small shaft guiding it exactly like this Slammer. It was interesting that the two screws holding in the pinion bearing on that C177 were under the AR clutch. It also had a very tiny spring on the override plate above that clutch. I did spill the roller bearings out of that clutch but it went back together easily. That reel had 5 bearings if you included the AR clutch bearing. There may be a bearing on the line roller but I did not totally disassemble that part. This Slammer appears to be a well-made reel but not having an AR override makes it less desirable for me. Good job Dennis! - Chris

The reel is well made and unfortunately they chose to go without the A/R override. It is all too common today to skip that feature

Hi, I have a slammer 4 4500 dx. After a trip it started to have some vibration. I can feel the vibration when I spin the reel while holding it. I can also need the vibration sound as well. I took off the spool and there is no vibration. Also when I spun the reel pointing up there was no vibration. It only vibrates when it is spinning in a horizontal position. I have only used this reel a few times. Got it in late Oct of last year. Any suggestions would be apricated.
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
If the reel is less than a year old, send it back to Penn. If I were to guess on the cause, the first one I would think of is loose case screws. If you are thinking there is no vibration when the spool is removed, then check to make sure the drags are tightened down. Next, check the click ratchet assembly on the axle shaft. Are the holding firm or moving around. Do you have a bearing on the axle shaft? Check to see if it is holding firm. It may be broken. Vibrations are tough - it usually means something is out of alignment or out of balance. Not sure what else to think - Dennis

That's hard because most are over 50 years old. The leaves you to find them int he secondary market like online eBay and in flea markets and yard sale bins

What would make up a beginner's "cleaning kit"? Tools & grease/oils
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
Here are a few thoughts. The best start is a small container of reel grease and oil in a combination package that is a 1 or 2 ounce size of each. Next would be Penetrating our to loosen grease and dirt. A pack of cotton swabs will clean the tight spots inside and outside of the reels. A roll of paper towels will wipe away the dirt and oil. A hard bristle brush, like a tooth brush, will help clean out gear teeth and crevices. A kitchen scrub pad, like Scotchbrite, cut into quarters, will help with tougher parts, like salt buildup or corrosion that require a little more abrasion. Thanks for asking - Dennis

hey dennis, do you now by any chance where i can buy a bail wire replacement for one of those kinds of reels, mine recently broke and ive been trying to find these parts for the longest time
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
Yes - you should be able to get the bail wire from Mysticparts.com You would follow the home page to parts and spinning reels and then select on the Slammer line to find the one you need....of just call them Scott and Mo will be happy to help you. Thanks for asking - Dennis

Would have liked to see the way that drag is assembled being that it is somewhat different than all the other spinning reels in your videos. When you removed the side plate you said there was a seal which I was nat able to see, are you referring to a seal around the perimeter of the side plate? I was hoping to see that as I don't see as much effort to prevent water intrusion as I thought there would be on this reel. Reason I mention it is because I was thinking about getting one of these.
@2ndChanceTackle2 жыл бұрын
Yes - the seal is the red o ring like its that goes in the groove of the case

$250 actually. Super robust. Kind of heavy but I'm a big guy don't mind the weight. 30 pounds of drag. I use it to pitch baits to dolphin or jig 30-40lb tuna in the 4500 size. Like it a lot.

@@2ndChanceTackle That is your business I should have realized that! If you get another in there is one flaw to that reel. The drag on the low end is still rather tight. Give it a try it's pretty strange actually.
