In a classic example of how a Penn State/Michigan State end-of-the-year game can turn into a thriller, the Nittany Lions got a touchdown from star receiver Bobby Engram in the last seconds to pull out the victory. It was a wild game, and at one point in the third quarter, Engram and teammate Freddie Scott were dropping routine passes from Richardson. Which was totally uncharacteristic. Then MSU started dropping passes too. Richardson struggled for most of the day but when it counted, he hit the passes he needed to hit and Engram caught what he needed to catch to vault the Nittany Lions back into the lead on two separate occasions in the fourth quarter. For some reason, the coaches seemed to want to throw heavy in this game when the running backs had consistent holes to run through. Stephen Pitts logged a 100+ yard game. But going to the air too much, often hurt the production of Penn State's offense today.
Penn State's Top Performers:
Bobby Engram: 8 catches, 109 yards, 2 TDs
Brandon Noble: 11 tackles, 1 interception
Brian Miller: 2 interceptions
Wally Richardson on final game-winning drive: 11-15, 73 yards, TD pass
Penn State concluded it's 1995 regular season with a, 8-3 record and was invited to go play Auburn in the Outback Bowl, carrying a national ranking of 14. The Spartans loss to Penn State set them back at 6-4-1, and would play LSU in the Independence Bowl, a game in which they would lose, for a final 6-5-1 record on the year.
