Speaking of magicians lying, there is a lie of omission in the story when Penn says Robert-Houdin was asked by Napolean to perform magic for the Algerians, letting you believe that this was the famous Napolean Bonaparte. It wasn't, it was his nephew whose name was also Napolean, but that wouldn't be as clean a story :)

If this is about the magician that I think it is: Yea, his blood bullet trick stopped a war. He went through Algeria with his tricks, making the tribal chiefs believe he had magical powers so they would not revolt against France. One day he was imprisoned by people who didn't believe in it. He spent a night in jail, and was to be executed at the next day. But incredibly, through the night in jail, he was able to prepare his maybe greatest trick, one that would go down in history as maybe the greatest act of magic ever performed, in terms of its outcome. So he was about to be executed, and had an Algerian shoot at him, and caught the bullet with his teeth - or at least that is what he made them believe. To add insult to injure, then he got the gun, and surrounded by armed people it was clear he could not shoot at any of them. Instead, he used two bullets he prepared in his jail cell, and he shot at their buildings and seemingly made them bleed. It was one of the greatest tricks of all time. As Pierre Bellemare wrote, French control over Algeria was the result of an illusion. But it later turned out that control was itself an illusion. It's a shame that he is far less known than Harry Houdini. Because his trick might have been the only time that is recorded in history without any mystification where an illusionist stopped a war.

I think the tirck is pen got hidden steel rood that is connected around his back and into the box where his friend inside the box holds to it while they lift the box easily,, and teller inside let go the steel rod when they try to lift it but they cant.. So when they can lift the box easily pen is actually holding his friend teller inside the box through that steel rod..

@@dr.floridamanphd it’s not done with electro magnets but the technology is so good now days that it doesn’t interfere with electronics. A simple door lock that is about 10 x 4 x 4 inches running on minimum power would do the trick. It’s how other light heavy boxes are done. Have you ever tried to push open a magnetically locked door? It’s impossible for 10 guys to do it.

I think there's a metal platform about a foot tall right in front of Penn's knees where Teller can sit down with his head, body, and legs inside the box. The platform has two strong metal rods that rest onto the wheel-table. The rods are covered by black cloth that matches Penn's pants' color and shape. Teller basically either sits on the platform to allow lifting or inside the box the prevent lifting.

No, there are no mirrors. The video has artifacts and the stage is built in sections so it reflects things weirdly. The big guy is used as misdirection for the people on stage while we (as the audience) can't see the secret. Teller is more of a puppeteer while Penn is more of a blindfold with an arm (or two.)

The box has no handles. To life 80+ lbs with just the palm of your hands providing friction against a smooth box is probably near impossible. Kind of like those carnival tricks - hold on to a rotating bar for 60 seconds and get $100 - there is a reason people bet $100 against your $3 for a chance to play.

@@BK-hq7tn Its designed to be borderline impossible, the problem is that this carnival trick has different variations (some use a rotating bars, some use heat changing bars etc.) so different variations require different solutions. And obviously those solutions are being banned so that it becomes near impossible to win. It is still possible though but you need to be very athlethic for it.

I don't know how heavy the box was to the guys, but my guess is they don't need magnets at all. Instead, they just needed a way to attach the box to the cart, which they could have made as heavy as they wanted. We never see the underside of the box, and Penn specifically requests only to his hands, so my guess is there's at least one hole in the box bottom that allows Teller to latch the box inside. If that's not it, they could have also used a switchable permanent magnet that takes less than a second to turn off and on. All else fails, they could have used technology that turns on and off with a simple double tap on the box

I love figuring out magic tricks so I know what you love about, but I love a good presentation and good entertainment value even more. I can sometimes understand how a trick is done the first time I watch something and still think it's an amazing trick and appreciate it just as much as if I didn't get it. And I can see a trick, don't understand how its done and don't like the trick at all. I just get the feeling youtube commenters only care about the method. If they understand the method, then its a bad trick and then they might as well just expose it. I hate that. What @raidmagic said, along with the basis of another trick where you get someone to lift you by your elbows, then you say some magic words - meanwhile, pointing your elbows slightly outward - and ask the person to try to lift you again. Your weight hasn’t change at all, but the angle at which the person is lifting has changed in subtle, but important, ways.

I know how they did it, there's a person inside the box! Revealing this at the end of the trick is a form of misdirection that prevents you from realizing the most obvious solution: that there is a person inside the box.

Right...he was just getting on an off a stiff platform preventing the volunteers from lifting it. The reason Penn said to lift it only to about here was to prevent the trick secret from being revealed accidentally which was a bar coming from the back of the rolling platform using his right leg to conceal it. If they pulled to high, they could aslo guess the secret as the platform will stop them from going any higher when the box is supposed to be light for them. The bar goes through the back of the box and is attached to a platform Teller can get on and off. Normally with a box trick, the magician will show that it is empty first and Penn did not which was telling or should I say Teller-ing.

Here is how it is done: (SPOILERS) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Teller is sitting on a chair inside the box. Penn doesn't leave them lift the box too high because they would expose the chair and Teller. the box is opened from below to allow the base of the chair to attach to the wooden platform. if you look closely when they lift the box you will notice one of Penn's legs looks weird, that is because they made the base of the chair look like Penn's leg. So simply when they are allowed to lift the box Teller is sitting still on the chair but when they are not allowed to, Teller holds the box from handles inside it.

My guess is that he kicked a mirror (or at least something that somehow looks like his feet) down around 3:43, concealing a trap door. I am not a magician, but it does seem like Penn kicks something around that time, you hear a squeak, and then when he lifts the box his legs don't quite line up with his feet.

Things to think about: Why is there a cart? what is the cart really made of? The guy who pushed the cart out on stage did something behind the box before removing the handle, what was that? What else is the box besides Teller? What was Teller doing while he was in the box? Penn mentioned electro-magantism, and a steel stage. why? Could they have done the trick with Teller getting in an empty box set on the stage? Probably not, which is why the cart and the surprise ending. All to distract from what is really going on.
