Penny is the answer to the "what would happen if MJ played in this era" question. Penny was one of few NBA players back then who was in MJs same league in terms of size, athleticism and talents. And as we can see, he gave MJ a run for his money. That's why I think is naive to think MJ in this era would average 50 and completely dominate. In this era, we have not one but lot of players as tall, strong, athletic as MJ used to be, and talented as hell: Anthony Edwards, Jason Tatum, to mention the best two. But we also have players not so physically gifted, but much more.talented, like Luka. You got your history wrong. Penny was healthy in the 96 Playoffs. He was Magic's best player in Eastern finals v. Bulls. 1998 is when injuries started plaguing Penny. It was Nick Anderson that got hurt late in Game 3 with the game already decided. As for Grant, hurt late in Game 1 (already a blowout), he wasn't going to outplay Rodman. He never did before 96 and never did after 96 (and let's not forget the Bulls won 3 of 4 of the regular season v. Magic - one without Rodman, one without Kukoc and one without Longley. *Lastly, anyone using injuries as an excuse is NOT a champion. Bulls won 3 straight rings:* - 1996 Kukoc and Harper injured - 1997 Kukoc, Longley, Kerr, Rodman and Randy Brown injured and MJ food poisoning in the Finals. - 1998 MJ entire season with dislocated finger, Pippen out half the season and Game 6 v. Utah Penny was badass but the fact is he never had the fire, fortitude and leadership to win a ring. And in 1995 and 1996 he got swept outright.

Anyway, to your point he seemed fine and continued play after that clash and when asked how he was physically after the game he said he had a cold - didn't say anything about a leg injury. That leg might have developed into an injury 2 years later but it certainly didn't bother him the rest of the 96 playoffs. Heck and 97 season too. The clash didn't look that bad either. But then again, sometimes guys get hurt just running alone without anyone in sight. Penny was unique and I put him up there with Kobe. If Penny were a better defender and had stronger will, resilience and fortitude I'd put him up there with MJ too.
