I feel like her shapeshifting might be an allegory for some kind of mental disorder, such as BPD. This would explain the changes being based on her emotional state. Also these disorders are often hereditary, which could explain the rest of her family supposedly having it too. The shell could be them "masking" to better fit in with everyone else.
