I like the wooden cabinets already there better than the shakers. And I don't care if it's "out of style". Staying "in style" is just a marketing ploy to get people to renovate often. Do what you love and don't worry what others think.

I designed my kitchen 22 years ago and still love it. I have a traditional style home. I chose white cabinets in embellished shaker style. I chose a large island in my favorite cobalt blue. I have been able to decorate in formal blue and white or rustic farmhouse. Very versatile, wood floors white subway tile backsplash I chose a Formica counter tops. I know but I love it and very durable. Never grown tired of my kitchen my favorite white color paint is Swiss coffee.

I redid my kitchen about 2 1/2 years ago. White shaker cabinets. 3 x 12 white subway tile. Laminate countertops. I wanted granite, but there was absolutely no way I could afford it so laminate it is. My house was built in 1900. It is 690 ft.² and I’m in a lower middle-class neighborhood. I did not want to do anything that was going to be overkill for the neighborhood. But also I was on a tight budget. It all works for me. And I am never updating my house again. When I die, the next person can deal with it.😜

I’m so glad someone mentioned that the styles are so that people have to remodel their kitchen or other room often. When I had my Interior Designer, she told me that I should pick what I like and keep it and not remodel or get new furniture or other things like that every time the Stiles changed. She said a person should pick the furniture, paint colors, and other styles and then just keep them for their lifetime.

I am a huge fan of the kitchen triangle. There's sometimes 3 major workers in my kitchen and we Never get in each other's way. There's a sense of relief and satisfaction whenever family and friends get in the kitchen together to strut their stuff. I also love and honor the proper distance between appliances and middle island to allow oven, dishwasher and refrigerator doors to open/shut while in most cases people pass through with ease. Thank you! I appreciate the tips you give on creating a timeless kitchen.

16 years ago I remodeled a kitchen and chose Shaker light wood cabinets with 2 pantry cabinets and a beadboard ceiling. It had an enormous industrial stainless sink. If I lived there now, the only thing I’d need to update would be the counter tops and change the light fixture over the sink. There ARE classic styles that stand the test of time. White Shaker is never out. It may be less popular than now, but white kitchens are never out, because when it’s clean, it sparkles.

Hi Penny, Michelle here. I just want to say I love your ideas. I have a 40 year old kitchen, dark wood, flat square plain panels with white backsplash and I still love. I have added over the years bisque appliance which i know out of style along with a cream, white and gray tile floor. I have added recess lights above the ceiling ,white ceiling fan and a decorated vent. I get so many compliments on my kitchen, its crazy. The key is as you say timeless ,classic, clean line and contrast. New to your channel and ill keep on checking in on what you have to say.

I own rental properties. All are old buildings, some over 100 years old, in Seattle. Most bathrooms and kitchens had been remodeled at some time in the past, and are terrible. I replace the kitchen cabinets, appliances, and countertops, and add great sources of lighting. All the wiring and plumbing is updated and brought up to code. I need to choose countertops and backsplashes that are indicative of an older era, yet have every modern convenience. Most tenants who choose older building want charm, as dormitory style apartments are the norm. I go with shaker cabinets, usually ikea. I love how there are so many expansive space saving options. So far, they are holding up well. I use white subway tiles with a grey grout (the color of mildew, because white grout will eventually be stained that color around sources of water and once stained, it’s hard to correct). I paint old, but working refrigerators, black. It’s a miracle worker. It gives me time to have the money to eventually replace them when they stop working. I never buy white appliances. It’s either black or stainless. I tile the floor with greige large rectangular tiles in a running bond pattern. I rarely choose all white cabinets. I love black on the bottom and white for the upper cabinets, or all black cabinets. I use a darker walnut butcher block from IKEA for countertops that I seal. The paint colors I use are B.M. Revere pewter for the walls, dove white for the trim, and dragon’s breath for the doors. I usually use white plantation blinds for the windows and greige colored carpeting. I run the white subway tiles to the ceiling as well as the upper cabinets. When I advertise, I will receive as many as 100 inquiries via email. I will show the apartment from noon to six on a Saturday with appointments every 15 minutes. Most, if not all, want the apartment, so it’s rented within days. The kitchen and bath look timeless and not trendy, but still fresh. Ironically, my own kitchen has maple shaker doors and hardwood floors. I am not happy with it. As decisive as I am with my rentals, I am a deer caught in the headlights with my own kitchen. Thank you for a great video. I never stop watching kitchen and decorating KZbin videos.

True about that; I can help others with their places, but harder with my own. My kitchen had 5 entrances or doorways, and two large windows on the opposite wall; this leaves little room for upper cabinets or full pantry cupboards. I’m still formulating ideas in my head, measuring, all before final design and renovation plans.

I have a granite that is more muted in creams and tan. Granite is harder than all other surface and you don’t have to be careful with hot pans. They don’t burn granite. I agree with most of your info Penny. Infact, we are currently doing a gut job kitchen remodel. We chose our finishes back in April and are still in this process. We chose a lvp flooring due to having 3 small dogs. Our cabinets are shaker painted tops will be an shade of white and the lowers will be a light shade of gray. Backsplash will be a white with shades of gray herringbone. Quartz countertops will be white with very light gray veins. Black stainless steel appliances with a black stainless steel range hood. Microwave will be in a custom shelve beside the oven. I can not wait for the to all come together. Thank you for this amazing video and I feel great that most of what we doing goes along with what you were saying. For us we will be living here for the rest of our lives and then it will be left for our child.

We all have different tastes and design preferences. I love my creamy white kitchen and stone counter tops. I can change the paint colour, furniture and display items to transform the look without having to change the cabinets or counter tops. I know I would not want a black or dark kitchen and I would not invest in any of those dark cabinets because I know what I can live with for a long period of time. They look beautiful to the right person but they do not hold up for me.

I love white kitchens. When we built our last home l chose a cream with wood crown molding to the upper and lower part of the cabinets. I have brushed nickel handles on the cabinets for my door openers. My island is a dark walnut with the same handles as the cabinets. I find that the color l chose is too creamy and l find that it always looks like it needs cleaning. I had a white kitchen and l loved it. It was always bright and beautiful. Hi Penny, I prefer the slab/flat front cabinet door and drawer faces, as they are easier to clean over shaker cabinets. If my clients want to have a shaker look, I always design the drawer faces with slab/flat front. I also think this looks cleaner. Love your ideas!

If I had to work with your type of kitchen, I wouldn’t change the cabinets. I would just add a deep green color to the island - it would work soo good with your natural shade of wood. I wouldn’t change shaker cabinets- it would just add character, romantic feel and warmness to your kitchens without making it feel outdated. And I would add a good size clear glass subway tile as a backsplash. It is highly practical to clean and adds a subtle sparkle to the space and really a whole another dimension of visual interest. Anything you do according to your preferences will be marvelous- I’m certain, and I can’t wait to see the new look!!

Kitchen triagle is best when there is only one cook and separate cleaner. My husband was the chef and he also cleaned as he went. My responsibiility was preparing table and clean up after dinner by washing and putting dishes, cutlery and cutlery away. He didn't want me touching his pots or knives. We had two triangles. When looking directly into the kitchen area, the left side was set up with fridge, food storage, microwave, under counter pull out coffee pot and toaster, pots and pans a large stove with hood and the sink across from it in the island. There was a two bowl sink in ithe sland with two sets of controls. The under counter island pull out of trash and composte was on my husbands side of the sink. The sink and stover was the dividing line. My side was on right. Set up triangle was of sink, dishwashers, everyday cutlery, dish/glass storage. The glass cabinet at end of cabinet run held fancy glasses, good dishes, fancy bowls and serving dishes of all sizes and types, and silverware. Items not always used every day. I accessed the fridge for condiments without crossing his cooking space.

My current favorite neutral cabinet color is Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore. I don’t love an all white kitchen, but I do like neutrals. This color adds a bit of warmth, but still reads neutral. I also don’t necessarily think the kitchen triangle needs to be strictly adhered to-especially the refrigerator. I think the refrigerator needs to be in a very accessible space where it doesn’t get in the way of food prep or washing dishes. ❤

Anybody who can redo their kitchen in 10 or even 15 years is much better off financially than I am . But I have a 50+ year old relatively small, but not tiny kitchen. So this video is so helpful. White and streamlined is what I need to make it seem larger. I do think I'll be able to have a nice island due to an old garden that was in my mid-century style house. High slanted ceilings because of that mid-century style without a lot of structural change too. I like the shaker style cabinets. I'll need that microwave over the cooktop to have enough storage too. I'll put the hood replace stream-lined one because that's all that's needed and it is not so big and imposing.

I’m about to do a full kitchen rebuild and her dated cabinets and countertop are exactly the same as my dated cabinets and countertop, LOL. Very early 2000s. I want a lot of white, but interest in natural details and varied lighter neutrals. No open shelving or uppers, but a wall of counterdepth appliance garage and pantry cabinets around a cooktop nook and wall ovens. I kind of love some of the porcelain tile that has a wood-ish look. Looking for biophilic, organic modern feel, I think. We have an island with a very large deeply patterned and curved on two sides granite slab that we all love because we’ve lived around that slab for 20 years, so I’m keeping that island slab which will become the focal point, but replacing the outer wall countertops with something more subdued but coordinating. Very excited to do this rebuild!

Current fave white for interiors is BM Swiss Coffee, 80% strength. I tend to like warmer whites, but we tried white dove and felt it was both too light/bright and too yellow for our space. For exterior, I just painted an east/west facing home in So California a very slightly taupe-y off-white called Pale Oak (with black trim) and people have literally come by when we’re there to ask about the paint color. It’s got just enough color that it almost looks like a Limewash. Btw - there are lots of interesting whites and off whites in that new fancy SW paint line. I’m looking through them now, for a bathroom remodel.

Thanks for all the tips! Jusr moved in a 1950s small house with a small galley kitchen. All the walls in the home were painted alabaster SW. The kitchen only has cabinets on one side. They are older white color which actually looks closer to the alabaster. Im in thr planning stages of figuring out what i want, but i do want timeless, bright, neutral, natural. I can add pops of color. Flooring is an wide dark brown tile and i hsve the granite countertops. I can't see anything on them. Lol! I like a plain, almost solid color beige top or whitish top. For now, ill just spend the winter painting my current cabinets bright white. Then figure out if i can keep any of the older cabinets and just change out thr doors maybe while deciding on installing cabinets on the opposite side where the stove is. I'll probably do the over the stove microwave when i get to that side since counter space is limited. Thanks for the video, i subscribed to get more ideas. Im probably 3 years away from doing it unless i can do parts along the way.

@@texassongwriter I like Cotton Knit from Behr for an off-white. Don't know if they still carry it. We wanted to paint our high-ceiling. open-plan walls with that a year or so ago, but our painters used Sherwin Williams, so the closest match was something with the word "milk" in it. It's ok, but doesn't have quite the freshness of cotton knit. We have one wall painted Jalapeno (it's deep reddish orange, love it, for a splash of color when you walk in the front door.}

Great tips and now going to watch more of your videos. You asked for a reply about the open shelving. I knew that wouldn't last too long since it takes too much maintenance to keep clean, not to mention having to wash dishes left in the open to collect dust and pet hair. However, I do think that if one has the space, one or two shelves are nice to add some decoration. I'm one to think that a kitchen shouldn't be totally utilitarian and should have some decor like other rooms of the house. In the same respect, you could use it for storage of some items like wine bottles, and combine those with something like pottery or floral to make an accessory setting. Again, thank you for the informative videos. So glad I found you today and subscribed!

I love the look of hoods over the stove I currently don't have one I personally like shaker style cabinets. I have a 10 ft Galley Kitchen on one side and a 9 ft eat in are off to the side with windows. Im trying to like my space so i'm doing a small remodel with new hardware ( brass ) "Wise Owl " Gray paint color on cabinets. Dark grey on walls for contrast. We have dark gray corian countertops, they are staying it's not in the budget for quartz right now! Wood wainscoting on back splash im gonna keep that for now but would love to do tile. We have recessed lighting and pendant needs an update might do something over the kitchen table thats new and fresh. Great video thanks

I agree with 15 year longevity on style. White kitchens will always be in style. I have off white with different color island(cherry). Five years later grey kitchens were popular, then mint green and blue. Now they are going out of style for modern with walnut. Shaker cabinets are always timeless. Yes the detail in the countertop should be muted. Subway tile is timeless and wood floors in kitchen are timeless. Shelving is usually because there are no top cabinets. It gives city dwellers more storage. I am looking for a redo now after 16 years. I will do all white this time with accents in beige or black. That is the safest and most traditional. Unfortunately people change up kitchens often unlike our parents who had kitchens for thirty years. This may be do to home remodeling channels on television today. I hope stainless stays in style but nobody knows what the future will bring. Quartz is the biggie now for countertops. I feel granite does not burn with hot items on it but the colors are not popular like the quartz colors. I use my kitchen and cook daily for my family so my redo will be practical. I hope my comments help someone, ❤

White cabinets are still in, but you need to design everything right. There’s a skill to designing an inviting kitchen, types of lighting play a huge role in making a kitchen look more expensive than it is… it should be useful for evenings, daytime, dark, cold winters, hot bright summers, and lifestyle (pets and children if applicable) Also remember, practical adjustable storage… create an itinerary of items and measure your items to know what cabinetry is required. You should know before the the design is finished, and contract is signed where you intend to place your items. The aesthetics are only one part of design… but useful, storage is the purpose of a kitchen. Just remember how annoying it is to find a spot for items and they won’t fit. Lastly, plan, plan, plan. Once the VERY detailed contract is signed with the best fit contractor (research well 3-4 companies), you should avoid making any changes. Changes will mess with your budget. You should take samples to know if you have lead, asbestos, or other issues. You should know which walls are bearing walls. You should know flooring heights to make sure one isn’t higher than the next room’s flooring. You should make sure dishwashers can be pulled out and repaired (ie. flooring extends under whole dishwasher). You should know the lowest point of room (check with a marble), you should know where your plumbing air vent pipe to the roof is because your sink needs to be 5 feet or less from it. Ideally have sink away from an outside wall, especially in places with cold winters… avoiding frozen pipes or mold. Vent above gas stove needs to be 30 inches, and you cannot have windows which open right next to your gas stove. No electrical outlets are allowed in an island side… only on top, that pops up (child safety rules). Make sure under each sink you have an individual water shut off valve. Electrical outlets need to be GFCI protected within 6 feet of a water source like a sink. Note where your light switches should be; they may need to be on both ends of a room, so you are not walking through the kitchen in the dark. Kitchen floors should withstand a dishwasher leak, a child spilling a liquid, or a dog knocking over a dogfood or water dish. Usually better for upper cabinets to be up to the ceiling to increase storage, and avoid dust bunny collection; makes a room look taller too. Choose handles that function well and feel good; NEVER in the centre of a cupboard door or too high for cook to reach easily. If you are a tall family, you can get 36” high lower cabinets. Study traffic flow in the room… you don’t want people walking through or children running through the active cooking, washing up, or prep zone. Roll out shelves allow you to reach to the back of a shelf, drawers are useful for storage, and cabinet above fridge should be as deep a refrigerator for storage of trays, roasting pans, or large lightweight mixing bowls. Design a kitchen to be able to have a place for everything, and easy to take out and put away. Make sure that when stove/oven doors are fully open, dishwasher door fully open, and refrigerator door open, you don’t have them hitting each other. Aisles should be a minimum of 36 inches to 48 inches; 48 is better for multiple people working in a kitchen. Remember to make sure support beams in basement under the kitchen are already strong enough for an island, lots of people visiting, and the rest of the weight of cabinets and appliances. Don’t want to have them fall into the basement because a trade/handiman had previously cut through the beams for wires, plumbing pipe, gas lines, or openings. All these functional issues are of utmost importance… you can always change a paint colour yourself.

The cabinets in your kitchen are called raised panel. We opted for that style in our kitchen renovation (just rectangular, not arched), because our home is very traditional with raised paneled doors and mantle. The shaker style would have also worked. @@cherylanon5791 Then just remove the doors, and store doors safely for new owner if you resell your place. Or have upper solid door panels replaced with a safe type of glass insert in door (more formal) or chicken wire (casual). This will reduce dust bunnies + grease build up. I also really like those soft close drawers and doors because one is more likely to close them. My husband tends to leave kitchen doors/drawers open in his rush to get to work, so every morning afterwards, I close all of them, from left to right before I start my day. Storage should be logical, not random. You should put items in drawers you would most likely go to. I found when I help others, I put utensils in storage containers on the counter so they are easily seen, and in reach. If the set up is done right, then it works, if not, then items need to be shifted to a more logical spot. Items used most should be most accessible.

I definitely agree about the microwave over the stove not looking that good. I want to remove it and add a nice range hood over the stove. I have cabinets that open out with frosted glass inserts and the microwave opens from the side. If these doors collide, it will dent the microwave or break the glass insert on the cabinet door. This is a design flaw that we did not consider. Having a stationary range hood is the solution. Thank you for all your inspiration.

In the last 30 years or more, there has been a trend to have too much upper cabinetry. While a lot of open shelving is not practical, a small amount should be put into the design IMHO. Leaving some wall space open makes a room feel more open and fresh. Heavy, dark upper cabinets especially close in a space and feel crowded. I am not opposed to colors but white cabinetry is definitely timeless and classic. We will be starting demo and then a complete rebuild of our kitchen and living room this coming spring. The things I am struggling with the most are choosing the metals for the faucets and cabinet hardware and which material/color counters to put in. I hope it will get easier as we get further into our project. This space is the last to be remodeled - we have touched EVERY bit of the home and this will be the final and biggest project!
