Im going to make a video compilation of all the awkward shots of players just standing there in the rooms before the games. Cracks me up how amateurish it looked! :D

Went to this game in 1981 at Penrith Park and boy what a tough game , a real slog . I was surprised at willing the Panthers forwards were , David Hall in particular . Newtown were riding high in 3rd place on the table coming into this clash and Penrith in 8th position had rolled St George and Manly in the previous 2 weeks . An unlikely 7's Big League match but a tough game worthy of a match of the round . On a side note , Rugby League has always had stupid rules through its history . Including the ATTACKING team getting penalised for the kicker NOT standing more than 5 metres behind the teammate passing him the ball .

Rugby League was a game determined on the concept of fairness. When dirty or cheap play was involved it got penalised. Example of this was the scrum.

The worst rule they introduced was the one where the attacking team could grubber the ball into touch prior to the 4th tackle from their own half…and get the scrum feed. Not surprise then that the rule was scrapped after 1 season.

"Including the ATTACKING team getting penalised for the kicker not standing more than 5 meters behind the the team mate passing him the ball." I'm not sure if you really understand what happened at 3:30 and 7:10 but the rule was quite simple. Basically the play the ball was considered to be a competitive play, sort of a mini scrum, between 2 players with a 2nd player for both teams directly behind to receive it from whomever won the ruck. The rest of the players from both teams had to stand back 5 meters so they wouldn't be offside defensively if the other team won the ruck. As for what happened here, I believe referee Danzey, who was one of the best at the time, he went looking for both penalties. For starters, the first penaly saw the prior play the ball infringed by the defensive team with both markers standing shockingly incorrect and a penalty should have been awarded to Penrith. Furthermore I believe that the Penrith player was 5 meters from the ruck and the penalty was pre conceived as can be seen by the ref spreading his arms out (calling for both teams to get back 5 meters) just before the play the ball. The second penalty was a "square up". This rule is no longer necessary as the ruck is no longer a competition with striking for the ball outlawed. Very sad. This had massive ramifications for the game in so many ways. Firstly, without having to worry about losing the ball, players would attempt faster play the balls which included not being penalised for incorrectly playing the ball. To counter this, defending teams started laying on the tacked player longer. This allowed teams more time to set their defence and it didn't fatigue the bigger forwards. This in turn nullified the ability of the smaller, more agile players to dominate towards the end of each half. The game became defence oriented. Secondly, the league decided to offset the defensive dominated game by moving the defence back 10m and penalising players for laying on the tackled player. This basically moved the game to far to the offensive, and nullified the skill based players and 2nd phase play that was required to breach the set defence. That led us to what we have now, in my opinion, a catastrophe. Hope that helped.
